Truluck's Seafood, Steak and Crab House - Austin Arboretum Ratings and Reviews
Food was very good. Seared scallops were perfect! The pan-Seared salmon was cooked to my liking. We also ordered a starter of fried calamari which may very well be the best I've had. The sauteed mushrooms were so delicious and hearty. Our wait service was superb with the server being attentive and thorough. The Proseco was light and bubbly and paired well with the seafood. The crab cake left a lot to be desired with the crabmeat being mushy and not firm. It left me feeling very let down as I seriously had the taste for a great lump crab cake. The sauteed spinach was unremarkable, but I wasn't surprised as it's sometimes difficult to finesse spinach and lots of chefs/cooks don't realize that with spinach, sometimes less is more. By far the biggest letdown was the crab fried rice. There was far too much going on in that one dish and thereby hindering the crabmeat from being the star. It had a kind of "sweetish" flavor that felt out of place in this dish. I definitely wouldn't order that again. Overall our experience was a pleasant one and I'd pay again to patronize this establishment.
Dined with wife on a delayed Valentine's present and found all staff to be very friendly and accommodating. Ordered wine and appetizer (Oysters Rockefeller) and found them to be tasty but a bit grainy. Wife ordered stuffed lobster tail with asparagus and I ordered the salmon bearnaise with mashed potatoes. Entrees were well-presented and very delicious. We had to pass on the desserts but they also looked very good. Had a small snag as the Reward Card we attempted to use would not process but it did not take away from the pleasant experience we had. Will come back to try other menu items soon.
I feel as though the quality has gone down in the last year. I have only been a few times, and I will admit that I am picky; however, the sides are just not very good anymore. They also have taken my favorite item off the menu (yes, I knew this before I went, but had chosen what I would order). For the price they charge, I am not sure it is worth it anymore. We did not have salt or pepper shakers on our table, we had to ask for bread (everyone around us who sat down after us received it without asking), we had to ask for cracked black pepper more than once and one of my sides was burnt and the other side ordered did not taste very good. It was Monday (all you can eat crab claws) which came without the fork they normally give (no big deal) and super busy, so I can understand some things (like the wait for our table even though we had reservations, which has never happened to us before. All of these individually, are not huge deals, but when added together, it is frustrating, especially when paying a high price.
They really need to work on the front of house experience at this location. When you compare the level of service and execution to the downtown Austin location, this place comes up short. The wait staff seem like they are reading off a script that comes across as formulaic and kind of insulting. Don't ask me if I am "enjoying my amazing food" ask me if everything turned out as I had hoped. Whatever, I can look past that. What I can't look past is that my date and I were at the table for an hour and a half when one of the managers came up and said they had another party that was going to need our table immediately. What the hell? I don't understand why the restaurant's inability to plan their reservations becomes MY problem. Another miss is that, at every Truluck's I have eaten at, the restaurant calls me the next day and asks for feedback. I have eaten at this location twice and have never received a call to follow up. Unfortunately this last visit has taken the Truluck's brand down a few pegs in my book, which is a real shame for the owners because I have spent over $5k in the last twelve months at the two locations in Austin.
Truluck's is our go-to restaurant for special occasions. We arrived over an hour early during happy hour for a drink and appetizers. After we found seats at the bar, it took 10 minutes to have our drink order taken and almost another 10 minutes for the drinks to arrive. Our appetizer was delivered to the couple next to us who arrived later than we did and ordered the same thing. The bar manager corrected the error and provided us with a second appetizer on the house. Once at our dinner table, the food and service were very good. We will certainly be back!
We go here every year for our anniversary and it never fails to impress. They have recently renovated and taken in what used to be the patio so there is plenty of dining room. You may need to let them know that you are there to take your time because service is so prompt.
We are repeat customers and have always had fantastic service until this visit. While the waitress was very pleasant she was very flighty and a bit "off" - lingered too long at the table making bizarre small talk and was just not up to Truluck standards. It was my birthday and she asked how old I was which was uncomfortable - but I would have gotten past that had service been good otherwise. She clearly forgot to put our entree orders in as it was well over an hour before they arrived when everyone else around us had their meals - and the sides were wrong. She came back 2x over the course of 20 mins to say "they'd be right out" and brought a second round of bread - never a good sign. Watching the superior waiter next to us it was clear she was either new or just not up to snuff. Food was excellent as always but the poor service really cast a pall on the evening.
We were there for a birthday celebration. Our waiter got us our food and a dessert but never came back to ask if we wanted more water or drinks. We were just visiting and opening gifts. He wanted us to leave and it was under two hours. So we paid our bill and left. The food was good and the new decor was nice but we weren’t happy with our waiter, Fred.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience here & would recommend this restaurant to anyone for a business meeting, small group, or special occasions. The service was great, but the noise level was a little loud. For an intimate dining experience it was hard to carry on a conversation.
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Nick was very informative in helping us make our choices and attentive throughout the evening. Both entrees were delicious and the champagne toast and Baked Alaska in honor of our anniversary was an unexpected and pleasant surprise.
