We have dined in Troya on a number of occasions and have always found it a pleasure. Although the staff can be a little harried and somewhat distracted during busy moments, their friendliness and obvious wish to meet your needs makes up for that little glitch.
As someone who loves Turkish food and knows it very well, I was disappointed to see the very few Turkish options on the menu. The whole Turkish- Californian fusion thing does NOT work. There was almost nothing Turkish on the appetizer menu (except tabouleh made with.... quinoa!!!!).
And the few dishes we picked from the main menu was totally disappointing. 1. Manti, which is like to Turkish ravioli made with ground beef, tasted like plastic outside and there was almost no meat inside. 2. The lamb skewer was hard to chew. 3. Turkish tea was stale and over-brewed.
As for the alcoholic beverages, don't plan to try any authentic Turkish options because 1. They don't have Raki, which is the #1 traditional Turkish drink similar to the Greek ouzo and that's the staples drink for any Turkish dinner. 2. Also, they have only one kind of Turkish red wine and it tastes very bland. They don't carry Okuzgozu or other premium turkish wines.
I had a very good dining experience at Dunya earlier this week and wanted to introduce my friends to another Turkish restaurant, but at the end of the night, I was totally embarrassed to have dragged them to Troya.
My husband and I had a Friday night dinner in this place. We made an order and were drinking wine.
When food arrived, my part of the order was not the one I ordered. When I mentioned it, she tried to convince me that I was wrong. I insisted on my choice.
She became extremely mad and angry. She left the table, approached the manager and yelled something.
Instead of asking any questions the manager picked up all the the plates from our table. With food! He never let us finish food and wine. He asked us to leave the restsurant.
Unbelievable behavior! We live in San Francisco for 25 years, traveled all over the world but never experienced such unprofessional treatment of customers.
Went to Troya on the recommendation of a friend....was not disappointed at all. In fact, was so pleasantly surprised! The red lentil soup was to die for...really, really tasty! The waiter was so friendly and kind and my friends and I had a superb dinner before heading to the Fillmore.
The whole dinner experience elicited a "meh" from both of us. We ordered a number of small plates to share. The hummus was pasty and tasteless, the lamb meatballs (more akin to lamb patties) were over done and dry. The quinoa salad was bland - perhaps adding a touch more feta for flavor - but as it was there were only wee tiny little feta crumbs to add a much needed pop. The two highlights were the roasted brussel sprouts - - nice and crispy with a yummy red pepper dipping sauce- and the roasted cauliflower. But, since it was supposed to be a Mediterranean restaurant, we were hoping that the actual Mediterranean food would have been the star of the show. On the other hand, the servers were nice - so at least there was that.
We have dined at Troya at least 4 times in the past 2 years. While the food was good still the choices were limited. There was only two wait staff. The restaurant was almost empty and the atmosphere of the past completely gone. Probably won't ever return.
I don't understand how restaurants that are half empty on a Saturday can have an attitude. Perhaps that's why they are half empty. The guy who help us sit down had an attitude, didn't seem happy at al that we were there to eat. The service could also be better. How is it that two people order soup and it comes in two different bowls. Does a high end restaurant not carry two marching bowls. But I like the food so I'll go back.
Bad experience with Troya. I had a confirmed reservation for lunch; 1:45 on Wednesday, 9/21. I arrived and found the place closed, under construction. Two construction workers there couldn't explain why the restaurant was closed or for how long. I never received a cancelation notice from the restaurant. I had been waiting to use my $15. credit and now don't know how I will recoup my investment.
I thought this was the Troya that used to be on Clement -- but the hostess said it was not -- and after eating there, it was clearly not the same. The food was okay. Nothing was bad, but there was no "life" to the food and truly it didn't taste worth the time or money. Disappointing.
We were warmly welcomed for a friend's birthday. The waittress was very friendly and well
informed about the various dishes. I would just say that my lamb kabob should have been
hotter- I think it might have sat in the kitchen too long. That said- the appetizers- cauliflower,
calamari and 3 dips were outstanding!!!
Delicious food. We had lamb kebabs and chicken kebabs with flavored basmati rice. A simple dinner with authentic spicy flavors of Turkey. The service was casual but attentive--and very friendly. Because we happened to be there on a slow Sunday evening, our server talked with us at length about her country and our experience touring it. It was a memorably good meal, and I am eager to return.
I don't think that dinner should be a rushed thing. If it needs to be, that's what a microwavable dinner is for. This wasn't my first visit to Troya for dinner. The first time I went, not a few weeks before my second visit, was far more impressive, and led me to want to return.
The return visit was quite a bit disappointing. The food was perfectly okay. Delicious, and honored most of my dietary requests, as possible.
The service, however, left me wanting. As other patrons left, and tables were bussed and cleaned, chairs were placed atop tables. After we declined dessert, the server brought the bill. We were not asked if we would even like to have coffee or tea. So my date and I paid and then split. The restaurant experience ended abruptly, and didn't exude the kind of hospitality I was extended previously.
I don't live in the area, and have many choices available to me since I can go wherever I choose, either in the neighborhood, or elsewhere in the city. If I were local, I'd probably go there often.
But, if that kind of service is what I can expect at Troya, I'll probably take a pass and find another spot. In fact, for Turkish cuisine, there's a place further out that I much prefer. I'll just go there.
What was initially an excellent restaurant went sadly down hill. For our recent visit, there was no one working the host stand all night, an overworked waitress serving, it seemed, the entire restaurant, and odd low-class devolutions, from serving dips in plastic bowls (this wasn't done before) to not serving rice for the chicken kebabs, which were undercooked, to what looked like store-bought pita instead of the amazing, thick homemade Turkish bread they used to have. There is clearly something amiss at Troya and we wouldn't return.
