The focus of the kitchen is house-made charcuterie and salumi. As many as 40 types of charcuterie are available on the all-day menu. Seasonal sides and simple cuts of meat round out the dinner options.
The focus of the drink menu is brandy. Many of the Armagnacs, Cognacs and Calvados served at Trou Normand and Bar Agricole are found nowhere else in the world.

I wanted to like this place so much. It was recommended by 7x7 for their charcuterie plate, which, when we arrived looked very sparse, for the cost on the menu. My girlfriend and I decided to opt for dinner instead because some of the items listed sounded inviting and I am a big mushroom fan.
We started the night with cocktails which we both enjoyed although I felt my scotch cocktail completely masked the flavor of the scotch.
We both shared a plate of Potatoes with Aioli and the mixed pickles. The potatoes were very well cooked, the Aioli was over salted. The mixed pickles were inconsistent in flavor and the cucumbers were barely brined.
Next, my girlfriend had the burger, which she received almost well done when she ordered it medium... It was also very poorly plated and just seemed like an afterthought. It was a very mediocre burger.
I had the lamb belly with the black trumpets. The lamb belly was overcooked and the entire plate was once again over salted.
For almost $200 I would have expected a better experience, but perhaps we came on a wrong day at the wrong time. I suspect one does not come to Trou Normand for food, but rather to have a couple of cocktails and a small bite to eat. If you were an overpaid tech engineer, I can imagine that it's not much of a problem to drop $50 on a sparse charcuterie plate... It just doesn't seem like the value is there for what we received. I could have gone to a tasting menu at a Michelin star restaurant for the money I paid.
Very disappointed and unlikely I will return.
Love this place. The rotating menu makes it both wonderful to try new things, but a favorite is missed. :)
Every dish was oversalted. Awful and expensive food. No wonder the restaurant was practically empty and ghost-like. I was embarrassed to have brought my friends there.
Terribly overpriced. $49 charcuterie plate included a few slices of salami, a tiny wedge of cheese and a small piece of pate. The $26 dollar eggs were tiny too. My husband ordered a beer and got 1/2 glass. Ridiculous!!
Food was excellent but pricey for what it was.
It was halfway outdoors and freezing cold. Took away from overall experience which would’ve otherwise been good to very good.

My wife and I went to Trou Normand for dinner and were personally attended to by Mr. Ben Krupp. He is one of the owners of this restaurant and was managing the place that evening. He was very personable and helpful. While the pricing of dishes was in line with high-end restaurants in San Francisco, the portions were very small. The two rooms of Trou Normand offer vastly different ambiances. The room in which the bar is located is warm and cozy, with big sofas. The room behind it is an enclosed patio which is much quieter. It has long tables with light chairs, almost like a classroom. In short, I would recommend Trou Normand for drinks but not for food.
Quaint joint with hip, artsy vibes amongst the more uppity SF FIDI restaurant scene. The service was delightful and treated our party quite respectfully, playing along with my friend's jokes throughout the night. Highly recommend the Heirloom carrots as a starter and coming with great company to enjoy this lovely spot!

Trou Normand is lovely! Its my go to spot for catching up with friends or grabbing a glass of wine after work. They have a delicious burger, wonderful cheese/charcuterie boards and amazing wine list (at a broad range of price points). The host is awesome and the entire staff is really helpful with recommendations.
Very expensive specially the meats, for $17 u get 4-5 tiny pieces.

We had eaten at the restaurant in 2014 and 2015. Then the fish course was excellent along with a delicious salad and salaumi. But this time we went on a Saturday night and unbeknown to us the nice tables in the back room were closed. Wish this was on the website or open table because the only options with 4 tables was the community table or bar, which is not comfortable for my wife. Apparently the business/tech crowds on M-F and not on the Saturday night.
The black cod was ok but two small pieces of fish served on a bed of vegetables...in what resembles a soup bowl.... that had a blue country style pattern. When the owner came to say hello which is very nice of him, we explained the dish would be more elegantly presented on a white dinner plate since it shows off the ingredients.
The mortadella was very refined and I wish they had a take out deli for the chacuterie.
Wow, Trou has changed so much. Seems like an identity crisis. Sad. Best of luck Trou, I won't be seeing you again.
Great choice for a date night. The menu changes daily which makes it fresh and the restaurant was busy but not over crowded. Loved the paté as an appetizer and definitely recommend desserts!
Worst dining experience, possibly ever. My cheeseburger came raw on the inside after a 30-minute wait. After another 20 minutes, they brought me a new one, ALSO RAW on the inside. (The manager seemed totally unphased and unconcerned. No apology from him at all.) At that point, my husband had finished his underwhelming pasta dish and we were late for a holiday party, so I didn't have time to order something else. Even though they comped our dinners, we still ended up spending over $100 on 2 drinks and a charcuterie plate. Such a rip off, and I left still hungry.
Additional issues: we sat at a booth in the bar area, and it was so, so cold. I wore my puffer jacket through the whole meal. The menu is really mediocre with surprisingly few options for gluten-free diners. There is literally not one single gf starch option since they fry their potatoes in a shared fryer. I asked for my burger on greens and the lettuce came spotted and wilted. The "side" for the burger was literally 3 pickles.
This place is great for drinks but the dinner service is pathetic. It's no wonder we got a reservation the night before a Friday in December in SF. We've had dinner here numerous times before and it was great, but since then, the menu has changed, as has the service and overall attitude of the people who work there. Never going back.
I have been trying to get to this restaurant for a long time. Unfortunately, I was not wowed. First of all, the tables/booths are huge so not very cozy. The food was really just ok. Their signature pork chop was fairly good, but their homemade sausages were salty and not that tasty. All in all, I was a bit disappointed and won’t be back given all of the other wonderful restaurants in this city!
Chef's selection charcuterie plate was pretty small for the price tag. Arancini we're good but comically small. Cocktails were spectacular, particularly the cognac old-fashioned.
Staff was incredibly accommodating, especially given that I accidentally booked two reservations and almost half my party dropped off. Thank you again!
The food was pretty tasty, but not nearly tasty enough to warrant the price, especially with those tiny portion sizes. Ordered one entre and an appetizer for each person at the table, and almost nobody felt left feeling satiated.
Great place for charcuterie in FiDi. Even allow our 2 huskies on the patio. Beggars got to lick the fois gras terrine which was our of this world!

Always love this spot. Outdoor patio is heated and seems to be in a canyon formed by immense skyscrapers, a truly impressive setting. Of course the charcuterie is awesome.

Trou Normand is one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. Great drinks, excellent food and good ambiance.
Trou Normand was a wonderful choice for a Friday night dinner. Traffic was bad and I was late - and yet they were completely understanding and sat me at the table while I waited for my friends who came ten minutes later. They brought me a glass of wine while I waited. We ordered the charcuterie platter and had the chef choose the 4 items for us - some specialty meat, salamis, 2 cheeses, crusty bread with fresh jam. Ordered the salmon skillet bread (like a small salmon pizza) and the house hamburger with sweet greens salad. All was so fresh and quintessentially San Francisco, which is what I was hoping for. Not huge portions. We were seated in the heated annex - not as cozy as the booths but it was better as my friends were late so less conspicuous! They loved their white wine and I enjoyed my glass on Pinot Noir. Very nice and knowledgeable staff.

The entrees were mostly delicious especially the pork chop. Which was perfectly cooked and tender. The pickles appetizer was overly pickled. The padron peppers were nicely done though each quite spicy. Our guests had the burger and salmon which they seemed to enjoy.
The charcuterie board was great, drinks fantastic, carbonara tasty.
Want to go back for drinks and charcuterie!
