About

A century ago, the Oakland Tribune used the tower’s ground floor as its “local room” —where reporters from different departments worked side by side and shared tips on the news of the day. It was a gathering spot for the great minds of Oakland, and a place where headlines were made. The Tribune Tavern will carry on that tradition—as a place for people to mingle over happy hour drinks, lunch meetings, or dinner—with authentic, nourishing comfort food that’s affordable enough for everyone to enjoy, and a bar stocked with the best locally-made beer and wine.

Food was quite good, but they were out of alot of items even though we there at 5:00 pm on a Sunday. Wait staff had not been informed of the items that were not available. Had repeated orders come back with "sorry we are out of that".

Extremely stressful environment to have lunch. Line cooks were being yelled at high volume and service staff got into loud argument. Not what I look for during lunch. No thanks.

Server compensated us for having to wait a little longer with a free side of mac and cheese. I thought that was considerate. The wait was not that bad so it surprised us. Nice to be surprised the first time you go to a restaurant.

Relatively simple but reliably well prepared salads and sandwiches and good service in one of Oaklnad's best places for lunch when you actually want to be able to carry on a conversation.

Tribune Tavern is one of my favorites in the downtown Oakland area. It has a great happy hour and great Sunday brunch. Bottomless mimosas are perfect for Saturday college game and Sunday NFL action. It's generally quiet on the weekends where other places will have a long wait. I'm reluctant to sing its praises since I know more people will discover this gem.

Not too great. I've lived in Oakland for so long and I'd never been there. Don't go for actual food. Drinks are fine but real food is a disaster.

This place serves enormous servings. Everything was easily shared since the amount of food exceeded what anyone could eat at one sitting. The food was tasty and the service very good. The noise level made it difficult to hear across the table. We had one person in a wheelchair and the restaurant was very helpful in getting him seated.

We requested separate checks, but the waiter refused. He ended up with 3 checks for 9 of us, all messed up. We had to spend too much time sorting but never made anyone happy.

I ordered Fish & Chip, which was terrible. Fish had too much of breading, and they were not crispy at all.

I planned a big party for 3 October birthdays. From start to finish everyone was incredibly kind and professional. We had a party of 15 people and the entire experience was just lovely. The food was great, the service was awesome, the staff was fun and accommodating. It was many of our first times there and everyone had a great time. Thank you!

Got together with friends here for lunch after religious services on Monday. It was lunch time so very busy and noisy. Service did not start off so well, but got better as the meal progressed. Yes, we would go again, as we enjoyed the food. Maybe try to stay away from such a busy part of the day when the noise level is high.

Our experience at Tribune Tavern was memorable, but for all of the wrong reasons.
Let's start with the pro's. Decent food, for a reasonable price. Four meals and one cocktail came to just around $100. Standard bar fair with a selection of liquors and beers. Good downtown location and open late.

The cons...
Our server changed several times throughout the evening. Our drink orders were taken twice, and despite 3 people ordering drinks, only 1 person ever got a drink. The other two were forgotten.
When we paid, we asked to split our $100 or so dollar check 50/50 with a credit card and cash.
We were surprised to get the bill and see it was all charged to the credit card. Suddenly, the waiter that took the bill (and cash) was nowhere to be found. When we ask another wait staff member what happened to our cash, she nonchalantly said "it happens. I will fix it." Not being satisfied with the answer of $50 just disappearing and being overlooked, we asked how would we have known we were over charged and the cash disappeared if we hadn't seen the bill. We were given a pathetic answer of "we audit the checks after closing". How does one check for cash they didn't know was stolen? As we continued to ask about this, the wait staff member finally said that she "was the manager on duty and that they were short staff and what did she want from us, these things happen."

Terrible attitude and a bad way to treat customers. We told her that for a manager, the way she was handling this was quite poor. She asked what we expected her to do - take money off or comp our drinks? We never received drinks, so we told her we felt at a loss and that this was a pretty awful experience.

After a few awkward moments for the wait staff member staring at us to come up with a solution, she said she was refunding the whole bill and wanted to wipe the slate clean with this experience.

While I appreciate the eventual outcome - the entire scenario was painful and left a really bad taste in our mouths.

When I there they did not have my reservation ready. The service was horrible our waitress did bring anything on time nor did she even bring the bill on time. Entire order was messed up!!!!! The fries were super saltly, my burger was raw when i requestd a well done, they give us a ton of guacamole with bearly any chip ls and when i requested a few more they wanted to change me for another plate at full price.Big waste of time and most of all waste of money. I not recommend this place to anyone. With so many new and old great places in oakland I would not ever go back. Best part of my experience was leaving and getting into my car.

Always great good and service, sitting at the bar is always great and the bartenders are faboulus with vine selections. The only thing is that it is very loud and hard to have a lounger conversation. We keep coming back though and specislly love the pate and cheese platter.

I was looking for a brunch spot that wasn't crazy expensive, stroller friendly and would have a minimum amount of hipsters.

Man, this place is a gem! I almost don't want to write this review.

It wasn't very crowded; they seated us in the back in a large booth.

I had the Eggs Benedict which was amazing! Friends had the pancakes with fried chicken and an omelet. Everything was so so good. And, their coffee!!

There was only one server for the entire restaurant so we didn't really see her but she was really nice and great overall.

Side note: had I known they had bottomless mimosas, I would have Ubered in.

Friends met for lunch--this is a convenient location for downtown Oakland. It is in a landmark setting and has a nice vibe. Three of us ordered the chicken caesar salad. It had a nice presentation but the dressing lacked flavor, didn't see much Parmesan and there were three very skimpy anchovies on the side. We would not order this dish again. Looking at other diners perhaps other dishes are more successful.

Pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. Downtown Oakland doesn't seem like a place you would want to have dinner but this place was quite good. Restaurant was very pleasant inside, easy parking on the street and the food was excellent. Service was attentive and food came out all at the same time, hot and delicious. Would definitely go here again....

They ignored is for ten minutes at the front desk...We just stood there awkwardly getting blank glances from the bartender. Things got better after we got a seat, but after we ordered our server disappeared. Another staff member was cleaning tables nearby so we asked her if she could send our server over and she said "she's busy." There were only three other tables in the restaurant, so she must have been doing side work. Then, the same staff member spilled a significant puddle of water on the table and just left it there. We waited for over ten minutes with a completely empty table (not including the puddle) before I decided to flag down our server myself to get the bill. We spent over an hour in a relatively empty restaurant while our server ignored us...Probably doing side work rather than serving us. The food and drinks were good though.
