Great food and atmosphere. A little on the pricey side.
So glad this place has re-opened! We had a great time at the bar, everyone was really nice and the drinks were outstanding! The only downside was that the fries were way too salty.
It is sooo nice to have the Tavern back in operation! Lunch or dinner during the work week are that much more enjoyable now.
The staff was extremely accommodating for a 'high maintenance' group and an unplanned party that was coincidentally taking place at the same time.
We were moved to a less noisy place and were patient with our group.
A great time and experience and even retrieved eyeglasses left at the bar the next day...
Tribune Tavern is a fun and great place to hang!
Food was blah, terribly salty, (and I like salty, so we’re talking lots of salt), menu very poor as far as variety was concerned.
I don't understand how this restaurant has anything above a 2 star rating. The food was bad - my friend's dish was undercooked and I ordered muscles - 1/2 the shells were empty, some randomly had cubes of potatoes inside them instead (?). The cocktails were priced like craft cocktails and tasted like random sugary mixtures. The waitress disappeared for long periods of time, she was apologetic - maybe she had too many tables(?). Didn't complain about any of it because it was clear that the standards were just not there to make good food and drinks - just make the best of it and not return. Fortunately I was with good company and had a good time because we had a lot of time to catch up. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone & will not be returning.
Crab was mushy. Mussels were tasty. Fried Burrata was cold and desperately needed salt. Wait staff uninterested in our comments about it. No offer for a new warm one. Hamburger you would think is giant at $17 but its small. Cooked well, but small. French onions soup and salmon tartare were delicious. Cocktails were also small but delicious. Better place for a drink or two and a snack than a dinner.
it was on a Sunday Evening, Restaurant was pretty quiet. Service was slow, however food was pretty good. We ordered the wine down menu. Wine selection was decent, however server had to keep getting waved at for pours. The wine down menu entree portions were pretty small, however the salad and desert was optimal. I would go back with friends for good company and a quiet place to eat on Sunday.
I had a negative experience here. We showed up about 5min late to our reservation yet still had to wait 10min to have a table. Our waiter did not check in on us and no one brought us water - I had to go to the bar to get it. A DJ set up music/speakers right next to our table, no one asked us if this was okay or said anything about it. The music was so loud we couldn’t have a conversation; another couple came in and were about to be seated near us and asked to move (due to how loud the music was). One appetizer, the fried burrata we ordered was cold and the bread was stale. The waiter came back after 45min and informed us that they did not have one of the main courses we ordered.
One or two of these things would be fine; I understand restaurants have busy nights, etc. but this was ridiculous. We canceled our meal, asked for the check, and left immediately. We will not be coming back and remain extremely disappointed.
Two hours into our meal the food arrives, lukewarm. I felt ripped off.
Got to spend valentines here! Food was solid! Great hosts!
Nice new place in Downtown Oakland. Well designed. Salad was not drowning in dressing. Bar area looked awesome. I will go back for dinner!
Went to have lunch and was not disappointed. I had the warm spinach with salmon and the butternut soup. The soup could have been warmer but the best was the lavender creme brule. So good.
We want this place to succeed but the value for the price is not there yet. We spent more on our meal at Tribune than we do at Wood Tavern, and that’s not okay.
Thanks for taking care of me and my guests. They raved about the food. Looking forward to my next visit.
I was looking forward to coming here and was glad they reopened. However, the soup (tasty) was only warm and the chicken in the salad pan fried not grilled (so a bit greasy). A little disappointed. I will try again. Good luck
Excellent food and atmosphere. Service was friendly, but a bit spotty.
Really enjoyed our meal and drinks. Tried out some new items on the Restaurant week menu. Great place for a cocktail and after work dinner. Excited to try the Sunday Dinner special next.
Great cocktails. Amazing service. The staff is stellar. Will be a regular spot.
Tribune Tavern was very energetic and the venue was quite comfortable.
The service was very, very slow. We had to keep asking for our food/for our server because we were trying to get to the Oakland Speaker series. If you're not in a hurry, it would be more enjoyable.
We tried the Oakland Restaurant week menu. The fish was a bit disappointing. One person had the chicken and it may have been the better choice. You get 3 courses with the menu, so if we'd only had one course the service would possibly - hopefully - have been faster.
It's a great location, though parking is a bit of a problem.
We went for restaurant week because I received an email with a specific menu for the week. When we got there, the menu wasn't even similar to what was emailed. While we were trying to decide the manager came and took those menus away and gave us another one that had even lower quality items to choose from. Our waiter never came and after 25 min we got up and left.
The restaurant was almost empty and we were seated in the very back of the restaurant in the corner. Couldn’t get a sense of the rest of the place. We were in a corner!!!! Seemed that they were seating the worst seats first. Well, then the food played out the same. Certainly very unremarkable. I’m not sure this place will make it. Not impressed! Mediocre food, ok service, a really sketchy location. They need to up their game to stay open.
It was restaurant week but the place is not busy when we got there. We got seated in the booth by the kitchen. The menu sounded really good, minus the fact that they didn’t have vegetarian options. The service took long and the folks serving the food didn’t even greet us, they simply attempt to put the food on the table. When we got our food, which took hella long, the food wasn’t even warm anymore. I’m guessing it has been sitting there? The flavors were good but the overall food wasn’t. I got the scallops and the pork belly and they’re both overcooked. The scallop was on the verge of being tough bec it was overcooked and the pork belly was almost burnt. The dashi broth was tasty however they didn’t give us proper utensils to eat it. How do you eat the broth without a spoon? Then the desert was supposed to be a birthday cake but there’s nothing birthday about it. It looked like a cake they bought from Safeway. My brother in law had the creme brûlée for dessert and even that was messed up: the sugar on top was sooo thick and it was almost hard to crack.
I was really hoping for a great experience but unfortunately they failed to deliver 🤷🏼♀️ Our serve did acknowledge that the food took longer and she took off a few items from out bill
Service and food was delightful and glad to see Tribune Tavern back.
Great customer service and food.
Excellent it was a nice place to celebrate the new year
Lovely experience all around. Knew we were in for a treat when the sauce on shrimp cocktail was house made.
Friendly waiter. Good food. Fun atmosphere but a little pricey.
I would still recommend them but the service was very slow.
Unfortunately this was so disappointing. From the reception person to the servers the attitude was rude and gruff. Our waiter Matt was excellent but the rest of the team was subpar. Our soups were plated with no care, our plates were cleared only after asking multiple times. The menu was small and two entrees were sold out....no steak, no salmon, no mussels. The pork chop was extremely vinegary, the gnocchi was very disappointing— huge pieces of carrots and Brussels sprouts - not seasonal as promised . The salmon tartare was excellent. The braised short ribs were super fatty and the sauce was meh.
The wine list was very minimal and no wineries we had ever had. We got the most expensive bottle ($35) and was disappointed. The drinks were excellent and desserts good, as an downtown Oakland worker I’m hoping it improves.
We love Chop Bar and Longemare, hoping this restaurant in the family improves.
Excellent lunchtime service and food. I had the spinach salad along with a nice glass of pinot.
We waited OVER an hour to be served. Got there at noon, entrees arrived at 1:10 p.m. The French Onion soup was lukewarm and my salmon was overcooked. I didn't ask anybody else how their food was because we were all so agitated by the time the food arrived and it was consumed. The excuse for the delay was there were 5 other parties going on. Only thing is all the seats around us were unoccupied.
A lot of tasty drinks. Had the fried chicken, very delicious. Also had the pulled pork sandwich was ok. Service was good for lunch, but parking in downtown Oakland is difficult.
We had a great time and Micheal the bartender really made our evening special. We ate and drank a fair amount and were not surprised when the bill came and the $$$ price. Just wish there were more Happy hour drink and food items; since we were real early before 5 pm. We love to all eat out a lot but it can add up quickly. We tend to return to places that have good Happy hours to save on cost.
The salmon tartare was tasty, but the calamari with peppers was even better. My sister ordered one of the salads, the one that comes with pears. It was good, but it had way too much dressing on it. If you order that one, get the dressing on the side. The service was superb, but we may have gotten lucky on an early Friday evening.
Irish coffee was undrinkable. Place was empty on a night it should have been packed
Spinach salad with chicken spectacular
Very good food. Server was very nice and polite, and very informed of the menu! We had a great time!
For drinks this is a great place. For dinner, it was busy and hence slow. The food was mediocre. The space loud and uncomfortable.
Went for a business lunch with 5 people. We were seated at a half circle booth, with the seating on a single side. Terrible for conversation.
