Trattoria Gianni Ratings and Reviews
The food and wine were nothing special but the prices are moderate and the service was fine.
$8.95 is very expensive for a mixed green salad with four very thin slices of apple/pear.
The carry out food was put in a very flimsy container and the sauce leaked out into the bag and it
was a mess. They need to upgrade the containers.
We love this place! Wonderful selection of old world Italian favorites and always something new and yummy on the specials menu. Excellent selection of wine by the bottle or the glass. We are always greeted like old friends and treated like family being cooked for by nonna! I had the gnocchi della nonna to start followed by the deliciously tender saltimbocca and some nice barolo by the glass. My wife had the house special salad and a delicious zuppa di mare chock full of mussels, scallops and a big chunk of tender tilapia. Tasty panna cotta for dessert. Don't miss it.
We ate here after the theater. My wife had the Rigatoni Alla Nocerina and thinks it may have been the best pasta she has ever had. I had the Pollo Alla Diavolo. The chicken was juicy and roasted to perfection. The service was exceptional - attentive without being intrusive. I look forward to our next trip.
Trattoria Gianni is always excellent, and convenient if you're going to Steppenwolf. The Branzino was excellent, as were the grilled vegetables. It gets dinged a bit this time because the minestrone soup was not remarkable, and because I was kicking myself for not getting the pasta appetizer that I would have preferred. Nonetheless, the meal was very, very good and it is always a pleasure to get back there.
Food was great, service was very good, and it is right across the street from Steppenwolf Theatre. We went there as the recommendation of a friend and were very satisfied. Everything we ordered was delicious. We ordered some of the daily specials and they were great.
We were in the neighborhood for the weekend. Looking a table for 8. Pleased they had space. Classic Italian. Crowd older than most places in Lincoln Park but that is because, I am sure, they have great return visits over a generation or two. Good service. Great food. Negroni was excellent.
I've eaten here once before and it was very positive. This time also was very good, although some of the details may have slipped just a half-notch. We needed a pre-theater meal. We were seated promptly at our reservation time, which was much appreciated. Our server seemed to be working hard to be attentive but he had a lot of tables to juggle. Even so, we got out in plenty of time. We would have appreciated an explanation of specials and help with the wines, but what we came up with on our own was pretty good. We both had salads, we split an order of risotto as a first plate, and then we each had a 2nd plate / entree. My salad, with goat cheese, apple and pear, was tasty but overdressed. The mushroom risotto was a little liquidy but had a wonderful flavor. The beef filets with potatoes and mushrooms were supposed to be medium-rare; two pieces were, one wasn't. Delicious, though. We decided we didn't have time or room for coffee and dessert. We'll definitely go back. But believe that with a little more attention they could up their game even higher.
The restaurant is located across the street from Steppenwolf so it's perfect for pre theatre dinner. We had a 2 hour window but waited lengthy times for service. Unfortunately they were understaffed. It was our first time there and the experience was stressful.
Girls night for theatre and dinner. Two of us were New and two had dined here many years ago. Wonderful service with great food. Menu should include a few more choices and the Sparkling menu could include a couple of additional choices for sure, maybe from Valdobbiadene region, if I were ordering . Our expectations were met and we all marveled how delicious our different choices were. Great salads and entrees, but needed the few additional choices in the Pasta arena. We are all planning to return soon.
I honestly didn't make the dinner (originally for 3). Friends were in from out-of-town, and saw LATE NITE CATECHISM at the Royal George Theatre down the street from the restaurant. I was very sick, and unfortunately, couldn't make it that day. However, I did ask them how the restaurant was, and they thought it was very nice. They said the food was excellent!
