As always, Monicas did not disappoint! They finally put my favorite meal on the menu as a regular dish, as it was a "special" for over 2 years. The newly renovated space is MUCH bigger. The original had some charm to it with very limited seating. Now it is quite loud, but at least there is more room to move. Exposed brick walls and ability to see the chef in action is a great plus. My favorite spot in the North End!
Besides the fact that the place is deafening with a few tables full, the service was abysmal - I think they totally forgot our appetizers - Sat their for over an hour waiting. The calamari was probably the worst I have ever had. The chicken was so overkilled and saturated in oil - Their sides? They should be embarrassed to serve such a sad portion. Really an unfortunate experience all around - Will not go back here
We went for my daughters 14th birthday on a Saturday night. All the food we ordered was great. The staff was very friendly but clearly spread thin and it seemed like everything was running behind - we had to wait for water glasses to be cleaned. Also very noisy. Overall, the food was worth it but maybe a weekday when less busy would be better.
We had to wear our coats because the windows were so drafty. The entrees took over an hour to show up. Only after telling the waitstaff that we were about to leave did the plates magically appear. The food was average at best. In the spirit of finding something positive, our waitress was wonderful and was constantly trying to accommodate for a substandard establishment.
Just recently opened after completing a remodel - so glad to have tried it here. Small and unassuming from the outside but step inside and be prepared to be delighted. Great wine list and full bar with some delicious cocktails! You can also enjoy the full menu at the bar. Menu has some italian staples and many staples with a twist! All the pasta is home made - the orecchiette with rabe and shrimp was delicious, the mushroom ravioli was fresh and flavorful and the linguine with clam sauce was also very good and had a good amount of clams in the dish. We started with the olive and cheese appetizer - generous portion for three of us to share. No dessert this time but we will be back!
Unfortunately, when we arrived at the restaurant for a special occasion dinner, which we had planned months in advance, the place was boarded up!
Would have been nice to hear from Open Table or the restaurant ahead of time to let us know.
Quite an embarrassment and inconvenience.
I made reservations in February for a date night on March 11th. We were really looking forward to trying out this restaurant. We show up at our reserved and confirmed time through open table only to find that the restaurant was closed due to renovations. I did not receive ANY notice that they were closed. Their website does not say they are closed. Thankfully we were able to salvage the night by going to another restaurant close by who had availability. Why would you be accepting reservations when you are closed due to renovations?
Had dined here in the past and had an enjoyable experience so booked a table for Valentine's Day. The restaurant was over crowded, loud, and generally hectic. The server didn't bother to greet us when we sat down, acted annoyed by our presence, and service remained atrocious throughout the night. Food was bland and lacking in quality on all fronts, and server had zero knowledge of the wine list or menu to offer us. This was a very steep price to pay for such a disappointing experience.
Been to the restaurant many times. It was just ok this time. It was a slow snowy night so the good news is our reservation was honored on time. I ordered the pesto pasta with scallops which I have had before. The temperature was not piping hot is was closer to warm than hot and it was not seasoned well at all... it was bland. So I was disappointed. The bread was not as fresh as usual either. With all the choices in the North End I don't think I will make this my go to anymore.
This is one of my favorite spots in the North End. It's incredibly small, so make sure you make a reservation as I would imagine they can't accommodate many walk ins. The wine list is very reasonably priced, which I appreciate. They had a bottle of Chianti on the menu for $20...the whole bottle. $20. But the food is really the star. All of the pasta is homemade and delicious. It's fortifying without feeling heavy. Monica's is one of those places that you truly feel satisfied after the meal.
Had the waitress not been so pushy about trying to get us out of the restaurant it would have been a much more pleasurable experience. We are cultured people, so to have her whip away plates before we were finished and hover like a helicopter I might have been able to enjoy myself a little more. The restaurant was too noisy due to the crowded space, it being a small restaurant. The food was pretty good, main dishes a little high for some of the pasta, but it was fine. We felt so rushed we went elsewhere for dessert. A shame. We did not overstay our reservation at all.
In a word, "yum!" Trattoria di Monica is snugly fit into the heart of the North End. This sweet little space and the sounds of the kitchen add to the conviviality that accompanies what is always a great Italian meal.
Husband went for a favorite chicken dish and wife had the shrimp special. The ingredients couldn't be fresher and the taste tastier. Service was warm, friendly and attentive. Great evening!
We were disappointed with the service. We arrived 10 minutes late for our reservation, and were asked to wait outside while she talked with the party ahead. When she opened the door 2 minutes later she said we had arrived 10 minutes after the reservation so she "no showed us, but could add us back but might not look good on open table profile." Then she said we would have to wait, no tables available. We were told that most tables had finished, or were finishing, but were taking their time so she was "giving them the eye." We were not seated until 1 hour after our original reservation. Waitress hardly said any words to us.
This restaurant is a North End gem. It is family owned and operated with a tiny dining room. I was in town for a visit with my brother in law and we had a great dinner. We all had salads and pasta dishes; The pasta was fresh and cooked to perfection. The service was attentive and we did not feel rushed in spite of the busy night.
We absolutely love the dining experience at this restaurant. We try to go there every time we are in the North End. When we eat elsewhere due to no reservations available we always say we can't wait to go back! The pumpkin ravioli is awesome as well as the 2 different scallop and pasta dishes. We can't imagine anything not being great. You can also head across the street to their market and get their fresh pasta to make at home! We will always be back!
Not impressed for the North End. On the plus side, everything was made to order and they make their own pasta. However, we were the only ones in the restaurant and our meal took 25 minutes and we actually had to search out the waitress. I had the Marsala and the chicken was good but there was NO sauce! The pasta was plain without sauce. My daughter had the sweet potato gnocchi. Again, there was No sauce and about a third of the pasta was inedible because it wasn't cooked enough. I would not recommend this restaurant. In addition, it was very pricey. $25.oo a meal at lunch.
