It was really fun to be back after many years but I was really disappointed that our small group of friends went to spend some time together, purposefully chose a place with a generally quieter dining room, and got there to find that they had rented out the entire dining area to a private party and we were assigned seating in the bar/lounge which became louder and louder with holiday celebrants. I would have suggested that we leave but we had no other reservations and there is nothing nearby. I think restaurants should contact folks and inform them if the restaurant experience is going to be impacted by a large party occupation of dining room, etc where diners would normally expect to be seated.
Initially they put 3 people at a table for two and I had to complain to the manager. Then we were sitted in the bar area which was too loud to hear the person across the table.
Eventually the manager put us at a great table in the dining room, but the evening started off terribly.
Always a treat to dine at this classic Bay Area restaurant. The atmosphere is outstanding and fun.
On a sad note, we found out the wonderful hostess Claudette will be retiring at the end of the year! Will definitely book another visit before she leaves!
Food was terrible. Service was too obtrusive. Interior, while festive seemed I need of a good cleaning and update.
We went there with two other family members to celebrate Good News from a medical procedure. Trader Vic's was exactly what we needed. Everything is great
One of our favorite restaurants in the bay area. Sits on the pier with a great view of the bay.
Everything was great!
The price was high for the quality of the food. There was nothing special about anything we ordered. For the price I expected more from the kitchen. Service was excellent and attentive. I really wanted to rave about my meal but I just feel "meh" about it.
So glad that Trader Vic’s is still around I’ve been hearing about since I was a little kid but just went there for the first time with a date. Fun atmosphere. Love the drinks. Food was awesome. The servings are substantial. If you like lamb, I would highly recommend the rack of lamb. And the mushroom appetizer is amazing.
We ordered Tidbits upon arrival and drink orders were taken in 2 shifts as 1 couple arrived about 15 minutes late. Those orders were delivered promptly. We ordered our entrees, and because we hadn't been together for awhile, didn't realize that 45 minutes had passed and our food had not arrived. We feel quite sure that our food order got lost in the midday shuffle. There was no particular apology for the long delay, although the staff was pleasant enough. We left minimal tip as the service was close to non-existent. We are old Cosmo Place diners and have been to the Emeryville location occasionally during the many years since it returned to the East Bay.
I love the consistent menu, the Tandoori oven and the familiarity of the restaurant and am very disappointed that our recent visit was not as expected.
waited 1 hour for food---salads were horrible, not dressed properly-- bunch of shrimp unattractively placed and had glassy look, like from freezer----waited so long, had no time for coffee. understaffed and no kitchen talent. too bad for a place everyone likes to come
Sea bass was great, New York steak yummy but filet & coconut shrimp disappointing. It took about 35 minutes between appetizer to main dish. No bread or butter, so we were hungry & just waiting for main entree. Desserts were ok, but for the price point, there are other restaurants I would rather go to.
Had a great time good service and food. Birthday celebration. Lived in the Bay Area all my life and hadn’t been to Trader Vic’s in years and happy I went back. Had a great time. Food and drinks were amazing..
better not food has deteriorated dramatically since previous visits
We love Trader Vic's! My husband and I throw a tiki party each year so are big into tiki culture. We chose this for our mutual birthday restaurant and had so much fun. There was live music, delicious food, and we LOVED the Maitai's. If you want a mini vacation to the tropics, make a resi for a fun dinner with creative and authentic decor and yummy drinks!
What can I say . . . one of my favorite spots for many reasons. Good food, stellar service and the cocktails can't be beat.
LOVE the view and the drinks are ALWAYS good and gets you going.
Been dining at Trader Vic's since it was Hinky Dinks on San Pablo Avenue in the 1960's....
Cosmo Place and Emeryville...so I have been a big fan for a long, long time.
Two years ago had Thanksgiving here at they ran out of food by 5 PM...and have been hesitant to return.
The food just doesn't warrant the price.
Cosmo tidbits for $26 ? Cheese Bings for $11 ? I had the salmon and it was OK. My
wife got indigestion from the curry.... the bill for 4 adults was over $300 and I don't
All things must change...sorry to see Trader's not change for the better...
Love the food the drinks the view over all great birthday dinner! Will be coming back.
Food and beverages delicious! If have a table on the bar side, know it can get pretty loud and noisy. A way overpriced item is the Crab and artichoke dip - just a handful of chips and small bowl for $21. Menu a bit pricey but I would go again.
Really great service and food and a relaxed atmosphere on a very busy Thanksgiving day. We had such a good time!
We enjoyed the atmosphere greatly. The food was unique but still good. I would have appreciated a more traditional Polynesian menu with a few more choices on a special offering.
The Canadian Whiskey was much appreciated.
This is one of the greatest examples of the classic Tiki restaurant still standing. The décor is traditional Polynesian Pop, retaining the charm of the mid-century tropical fantasy, while never crossing the line into kitsch. The cocktails my not be quite as crafty as those at SF’s Smugglers Cove or Pagan Idol, but they are still delicious.
Very disappointed. Probably will never go back. Loud. Dirty. Slow service. Took 40 min after we sat to get drinks. Appetizers arrived first. Really?
Ha d a wonderful night with my wife celebrating my birthday. And Tito Y su Son De Cuba we’re off the charts! Thanks!
Five of us had an extremely negative experience. The server was inexperienced and not at all knowledgable.
When I ordered, I informed our server of a severe allergy to all colors of bell pepper and asked that she check to make sure that my order did not include it. She returned and said my order did not include bell pepper. However, when the food arrived, one dish contained a bell pepper garnish. I ordered an alternative dish and she left to place the order. The bell pepper garnish was confirmed by my friends who do not have the allergy.
Our server disappeared, and the manager delivered my replacement dish. There was no appology offered and, he aggressively insisted that I was wrong. When I asked what, in fact, was the red garnish, he refused to respond.
I have never had a similar experience. The restaurant's attitude was so unreasonable that all five of us agreed we would not return, nor would we ever recommend Trader Vic's to anyone.
We had not been to Trader Vic's for a few years. Not until we read about the retirement of the long time hostess in the SF Chronicle, did we think we should go there again and thus we did go for a midweek lunch. Free valet parking, a cheery welcome by the reception staff and prime window table set the proper mood. Of course we had to have the Trader's Mai Tai which was better than the one I make at home (using TV's mix). There were two of us, we ordered wonton soup with a generous amount of dumplings and green onions and large slices of a green vegetable which we had to cut to bite size on our butter plates. The presentation looked pretty (but impractical). Good soup though. We each ordered Lagunitas IPA draft to go with the main course. 10 oz pours.
Our main course was rice bowls with chopped Asian style duck and various cooked vegetables and salad greens and pickled slices of red cabbage which was still crispy but definitely no longer raw. Hoisin sauce dressing. Very good, a lovely presentation and a generous size serving. An espresso for one of us brought the luncheon tab to just about $100 pus tips for wait staff and parking valet. The service was excellent, though considering the cost, this was obviously a special treat unless you're on an expense account which many of the other diners seemed to be.
We’ve been to Trader Vic’s many times and everything was great, good table, good drinks, good food and good service. One minor quibble, I had notified them in advance that it was my husband’s birthday and it was not acknowledged at all. A little disappointing.
The only issue was that my husband's patty melt didn't come with a fried egg. He spoke to manager who was going to give a dessert. Our waitress told us at brunch there was no dessert options. The manager never came back and we never got compensated for the error.
Trader Vic's is a wonderful place and we have enjoyed many special dinners there but their brunch did not live up to my expectations. The service and decor/view are top notch but the brunch dishes we ordered all tasted like they had been sitting under the warmer far too long. My eggs Benedict barely had any hollandaise sauce on it and the poached eggs were cooked too long and were sticky and gooey and awful. They also discontinued the bottomless Mimosas. We paid a lot but chalk that up to the beautiful view and our lovely server. We just wish their brunch was as good as their dinner.
we went when they had an event , it was fun but the food was not great , I had a crab Benedict and it had no Hollandaise sauce on it so it was dry , yuk
Fun throwback scene! Great ambience. Good food, a little pricey and cocktails could be stronger. Overall worth it
This is probably the fourth or fifth time we have eaten at the Traders. The occasion was our daughter's bday. Before this occasion, I was always impressed with the quality of the cocktails, my favorite a 1944 Mai Tai. This time it was a bit weak and watery. We had two orders of appetizers (pupus) to share, and they were very good and tasty. When it came time to order our entrees, bday girl picked 5 spice duck, my son-in-law and I shared the pork shank. We were told at the outset the pork would take 45 minutes, and were we OK with the wait? After asking everyone in the party for their OK, I said go ahead, we'll wait. About 25 minutes later, the waiter reappeared at our table telling bday girl they were now out of 5 spice duck, and she would have to pick something else! She settled for something else. I will say when our pork arrived it was so Good! I found it wrong that after she placed her order, she did not get what she wanted, and her husband and I felt a bit guilty ordering the melt in your mouth pork, and the lengthy wait it entailed. It was a good meal though, and our waiter was very attentive. They did bring bday girl chocolate coconut sundae to celebrate her day. We had wonderful seating right at the window, looking out at SF bay.
First time at Trader Vic's and we went for the Mai Tai's which did not disappoint! Food was good, but portions were a little on the small side, especially the pupu platter. We were expecting a much larger plate, as there were 5 of us. We shared all of our dishes, and that was great, but again, portions were a little on the small side, even if each person had ordered one entree each. The do have larger share plates, but the prices were a bit more expensive and only fed 2-3 people in most cases. We were happy with the taste of the food and the drinks, but thought the prices were a bit higher than what most polynesian or asian food restaurants would be.
We were a group of 8 adults and 2 children celebrating the 89 birthday of a family friend. I had miscounted the number of guests and the hostess had to move us to a bigger table. She was very gracious about it. The food and drinks were great. The staff went out of their way to
Arrange the table so the little ones were accommodated.
The view was great. The waiters brought a dessert singing happy birthday to the guest of honor. She was moved to tears.
Thanks Trader Vic's for making the birthday dinner so special!
Loved it. Great drinks and absolutely fantastic food.
We had a small lunch celebration for my 94 yr old dad. The menu had recently changed but we fell in love with the Salmon with Shitake Mushrooms and Garlic/Artichoke potatoes. The food was delicious and cooked beautifully at medium rare. But what made the meal memorable was the outstanding attentive service from our waiter, John M. He was responsive, creative, (dressed like a Revolutionary Soldier - it was Halloween) and provided information on the changed new menu, while advising we could still order older favorites like the loco moco..
He brought us a complementary dessert for my dad with a candle and sang happy birthday. He was aware of the birthday because the hostess had queried my sister when a gift bag was spotted upon her arrival. A sharp hostess passes this info along to the waiter and it was a wonderful unexpected and excellent bit of customer service.
What sometimes is just 'lunch at Trader Vic's' became a truly memorable event because of this solicitous attitude and fine attention to detail. Just a great day and we thank you so much. Dad stood and shook hands with John M. thanking him for a delightful meal and that he just might target for 95 if he could come back there.
Look for us a year from now (we do come more often than that honest!) - and I hope John M will be our waiter. Fantastic service!! and Great food. Well done.
Returning after 5 yrs and found very limited dinner menu. Favorites missing. Can order chow mein off menu. Green goddess salad no longer available. Very expensive. Beautiful restaurant interior and great views.
Great meal at a great restaurant
I informed them it was our anniversary when I made the reservation. When we arrived and again when we left, the hostess wished us a happy anniversary, as did our server. We enjoyed happy hour drinks and delicious appetizers in the bar. Great touch that most of the tropical drinks have unique glasses. Our meal in the dining room was also excellent.
