I've been visiting Trader Vic's Emeryville location for more than 40 years. When I first started visiting they had a dress code, with coat and tie required for "gentlemen". What if I'm a rowdy rather than a gentleman? Do I still have to dress up? I asked my parents. The dress code is gone but the food and views are still fantastic.

Stayed up in the city for an overnight stay while attending a boat show. They have a great
Tiki Bar right on the water. The Mai-Tai's are great. Bar staff very nice and food servers excellent. Take you time with the menu, as it is different and very good. We had a great time.
Rum flights for dessert ! Hotels very close and Uber is a must with the Tai's. Have fun we did !

I went here for my 2 year anniversary. It was a wonderful experience for me and my boyfriend. They have a valet, which was never mentioned on the site nor when I confirmed my reservation. Staff was very friendly and checked up on us in well-mannered time spans. Food was delicious. Every bite was an experience. The smokiness flavor from their cooking method is unbelievable. The drinks were pretty good as well. At the end of the night, we were congratulated on our anniversary with a ice cream dessert that was also delicious.

This was my second time I dined at Trader Vics and everything was great again. Food, view, services, friendly and welcoming staff including the parking valet who went out of their way to extend their hospitality.

Of course, I will recommend my neighborhood place, it still has its spectacular Tiki charm and a view of yachts. So I just bring money and have low expectations and that seems to work. Here we were, two 5 o'clock early birds with a 7 o'clock theater curtain in nearby Berkeley arriving 15 minutes early. The very pretty hostess was patiently busy on the phone, giving us no eye contact at all. After two uncomfortable minutes we were directed to the lounge since the dining room was not to open 'til 5. It did not seem busy, but it took about 5 minutes to get our two drinks. My virgin Pina Colada was unnecessarily sweet, but pretty with fruit skewer and fresh mint bundle. At 5 we were then ushered into the dining room, mostly empty, except for one 6-top arriving and perhaps three other tables of two or three. Still, we were seated at a small
cocktail sized table, and ordered drinks and dinner. Service was friendly, and food came timely and hot. Fried Shrimp appetizer was crisp in some kind of cornmeal breading with some kind of BBQ dip and mustard on the side. It was ok. Beef skewer appetizers were tender, cooked rare, and presented with a small flame pit to be finished by cooking it to taste. Too bad the meat was brushed with BBQ sauce, which caramelizes in the open flame and must cool down to eating temperature or burn the lip. Oh well. The entree of Lamb Curry was tender and looked spectacular surrounded with little condiments to spruce up the curry sauce, which someone really should taste it before service. It was as mild as a 1 out of 10. The Mango Beef was very delicious, but an 8 out of 10 overly spicy. The diced Mango would have been perfect had been as tender as the beef. However, it was very unripe, and I just picked it all out and sulked. No one took notice. We ate, we paid, tipped well, and maybe give it another try in a year or so. Just can't resist that "exotic" food with Hawaiian music and yachts in the sunset, I guess.

This was our second visit to Trader Vic's, the first visiting the bar and lounge only. Both times we enjoyed ourselves and want to go back. Valet parking is complimentary if you're going to be a patron of Trader Vic's. So take advantage of that.
We had reservations and were seated right away. Not the best spot since on the other side of the thin wall was the waiter station. Banging, constant gatherings that were noticed through the glass window...very busy spot and a bit distracting.
Our food came with perfect timing. First was the lite bite. Crackers with Peanut butter mixed with coconut oil and spices. Not a fan and my better half liked it.
We ordered the encrusted Mahi Mahi and three sides. Creamed Spinach, Brussel Sprouts and fingerling potatoes. Everything was delicious.
We also ordered a couple of drinks, Trader Vic's grog and a hot buttered rum. This is where you're going to get gouged. The drinks, while very good are very small.
Service was pretty good. I don't recall anyone checking on us half way or actually any part of our meal. Staff was around, so if we did need anything, we could easily flag someone down, I'm sure. I'm accustomed to being asked if everything is alright or if I need anything at least once during my meal.

It’s always been a pleasure to go here. Im always satisfied. I’m even able to have vegetarian options(which is ideal.) I also don’t drink and the ability to have a non alcoholic cocktail makes me feel great!

My third or fourth time eating here and I really love the food. Everything I've had from Trader Vics is just really, really good. This time I had the mac nut mahi mahi and my wife and I shared the all in fried rice -- delicious. We were both so full when we left because we couldn't stop eating all the great food. The ambiance is amazing too, I really enjoy the escapism of the tropical/tiki theme.

I called TV's to ask if they were open on Easter before booking this reservation through open table. Nothing was mentioned to me about the change in hours or (most importantly) that it was a "buffet only" for Easter Sunday. We booked 4pm reservations and the buffet closed at 5. Almost everything was out, cold and otherwise terrible as it had been sitting out all day long. If I would have known that we would have just had a cocktail and gone somewhere else for dinner. I have Celiac disease and their normal menu can accomidate that. My husband is diabetic and the same goes for him. There was very little we could eat at the buffet and we were gouged $65 each for the privilege of the old, cold food. Service was particularly bad. Dirty plates stacked on our table and we were never asked if we wanted another cocktail. Also our water glasses were never refilled. I've had mostly good experiences at TV's till then, but that was enough to make me not want to come back. We never knew how much the buffet was till our bill came. It was outrageous and I left very upset/angry/annoyed. The staff who took my call regarding their Easter hours should have informed me of the deviation. That was a massive oversight. Also I wouldn't take reservations after 3 if you close at 5 and the food is out by 4.

Never used to go for the food, but was surprised at how good dinner was! Their oven roasted stuff is really yummy. Good sized meals. But of course, the real reason to go is the amazing drink menu. Now they have rum flights as well. At first when they remodeled and retooled several years ago, I was bummed to see some of the cool decor go away and it seemed a bit sterile compared to what I liked. However, the beverages never faltered, the food got better, and now... rum flights to boot!

Trader Vic's has always been a festive place to meet for drinks and appetizers. Both fit the tiki theme beautifully. And a Mai Tai is a must -- best ever. I like Trader Vic's so much that I have even hosted a dinner party for 20 which turned out to be great fun with decent food.

What I would NOT recommend is going for Sunday brunch. The menu choices were odd -- and there seemed to be no flexibility in modifying an item. For example, I wanted an omelette. The only one on the menu featured oysters (and I'm not a fan). Turns out I couldn't order a plain omelette instead. So I went for a veggie hash dish. My friends were likewise baffled with the choices. One friend ended up ordering off the "sides" menu as there wasn't anything that appealed to her. When the meal arrived, none of us was pleased with its preparation: everything was dry, overcooked and uninspired. It felt more like cheap diner food than an upscale restaurant (with prices to match). With tip, my portion of the bill for two was $65 ...and no alcohol! And I left hungry, as I just nibbled at my dish. So disappointing. Will stick to eating and drinking in the lounge.

I would recommend Trader Vic's bar over the restaurant. Nice views, good drinks and bar snacks. The sit-down restaurant is expensive; you're paying for the ambiance and the view. Service this last visit was inattentive. The waiter disappeared and others filled in for him when we asked for a couple of extras and for the check. Still, overall I'd recommend Trader Vic's for an occasional visit for those of us nostalgic for the 1950s and 60s.

Overall, food was mediocre and restaurant seems very tired...felt like we were back in the 60’s (unless that is the affect the restaurant wants). Mai Tai’s were good, but over-loaded with crushed ice. Server was great though...very friendly and professional.

We went to Brunch at Trader Vic’s. This is a newer service they are providing. The music was outstanding, the service and friendliness of the staff was as always truly wonderful. At first my meal came to the table wrong (hence the 3 rating) but it was quickly remedied by staff and was quite good. My partners meal was ok but just ok. Drinks were excellent, coffee fantastic. I hope that as their menu evolves they might think about a few more options with less sea food for breakfast. I will definitely go back and bring friends. I really do love this place.

Great tiki experience! Decor is out of this world, drinks are top shelf and the food was surprisingly good. Vic's 1944 Mai Tai, Seyhorse and Trader Vic's Grog were our choice of drinks and all were made with quality ingredients and mixed with precision.

Shitake BBQ Salmon and Thai Curry Prawns were our dinner choices. Both meals were excellent.

Only negatives, our waitress was very good but stretched far too thin. We were there for 2 hours, most of that time was just spent waiting for service or for food. We could have been in and out in an hour, maybe an hour and 15 minutes if they had more staff.

The other negative was the noise level. We were seated at a premium table by the window overlooking the marina. Beautiful sunset view but there were a couple of groups around us that were so loud it was deafening.

When we couldn't take it any longer, the manager was beside himself seemingly bracing himself for noise complaints. But we just wanted our check so we could get on the road. It wasn't the restaurant's fault. I wasn't familiar with the layout of the seating and didn't realize there were two other dining areas that were much quieter.

He offered to comp dessert but we really needed to just go at this point. He comp'd my dinner which was unexpected and appreciated but really not necessary.

In their defense, it was a Sunday night before a holiday. It seems unavoidable that restaurants are not staffed for the additional push that comes with that dynamic.

We certainly recommend Trader Vic's and we'll definitely be back. Just be sure to request a table away from the bar in the general dining area.

Tiki and Trader's go together. It's a shame that all the Trader Vic's restaurants have closed with only a couple exceptions, this being one. (Atlanta is only other US location). We remember the treat of pupu platters in the past and were sad when our local closed in the early 80s. The good news is that Emeryville's Maitai lives on and is wonderful. The location is terrific overlooking the harbor, the service is great. The only disappointment was the much smaller menu of far less interesting choices. While my salmon was cooked in their impressive clay pots, husband's kung pao chicken was just fine, tho he did like the little chinese mushrooms. I just can't take a restaurant with chow mein terribly seriously. Go for the view, drinks and festive decor and service, not for outstanding food.
