Trace Ratings and Reviews
Surprisingly empty at 7pm on a Friday night with a Gaming convention in town. Possibly too pricey for the amount of food? Past its prime? The decor hasn't seem to change for many years now. Kind of stark and a bit cold. But very clean, white, and crisp. It's a nice environment, albeit a little impersonal.
Food was good. Good thing we had a TravelZoo coupon which saved us ~$40 on the meal.
we were visiting from out of town and wanted to try a nice local restaurant and a travelzoo offer and gave it a try. the value was exceptional, the raw oyster we had was one of the best we've ever tasted, and would definitely go back just for that! nice selection of bread to start which actually hurt us because we were quite full before the entrees came, we didn't expect the portions we received, which was surprisingly generous. the shanghai noodle was a tad bit heavy on the oil. the lentil soup was very tasty. the scallop was nicely seared and the branzini was very juicy yet the skin was deliciously crispy! the only complaint we had was we didn't save room for dessert!
Came here for restaurant week. Was told that they do not serve restaurant week during weekend "brunch". This should have been clearly communicated on their online Web site and during the reservation process.
This is a blatant attempt at bait and switch. Would not have gone if not for restaurant week.
Food was mediocre, in my opinion it is not worth the high $$$ that they charge.
I eat lunch at Trace regularly! It is my go to place with colleagues or friends for a South of Market lunch spot.
Service is so friendly, I know all of the waiters. The food is delicious and many good options.
They have a great Lunch on the Fly menu.
Check it out!
Hiding in plain sight! I've lived in the neighborhood for 18 years and walked by Trace numerous times over the years...first when it was XYZ and now Trace. Went for restaurant week and wow, so impressed. Everything was cooked to perfection, the salmon was wonderful as were the Brussel sprouts. Great service and fantastic ambiance. Will absolutely be back!
Stopped for lunch before heading into SF MOMA since it is next door. Trace offers some tasty cocktails and has a few special lunch deals that are well priced. We particularly liked the kale salad and the sweet potato soup. The chicken salad was a bit surprising because there were no greens in it and the protein portion was very large--but it tasted good. A few of the tables are placed very close to the door and with a chilly San Francisco breeze blowing those didn't look like a good place to sit. But the decor is light and bright and as long as you're not right by the door, the space is very nice.
The noise level was so intense, bass booming out and vibrating through the floor - it was not possible to enjoy the meal or conversation. This is clearly a restaurant where the bar atmosphere - including the DJ - has been prioritized. Very disappointing as a dining experience, however. I could not recommend this restaurant to anyone who intends to have an actual meal.
The staff were prompt and courteous. The Hangar steak was ordered medium rare and it was perfectly prepared. My lady offered me a taste of hers and I immediately thought that I would return to order me one and bring friends so that they could enjoy a deliciously prepared steak.
It was tender, practically melted in your mouth, with just the right amount of char on the ends.
I ordered the Trace Hamburger. It was moist, delicious and prepared with chopped pickles that made every bite a delight. The seasonings made the taste linger between bites. My only regret it that I ate it way too fast. Oh and have it with their Bloody Mary. It may help you slow your eagerness to savor the burger too quickly. I had plenty to sip with my fries because I gulped that cheese burger, it was that good.
Got together with some friends for brunch before going to the SF Car Show on Sunday. We were the only ones in the restaurant which was very nice. Food was great so where the Bloody Maries. One of my friends had lunch during the week on a prior occasion and she highly recommended it.
I had been to this restaurant several times when it was XYZ and it was wonderful. On this occasion, I was embarrassed that I took my family there. The service was mostly lacking and the food was not very good. I ordered a hamburger medium rare, it was well done. I was afraid to send it back as it took so long for the order to materialize. My brother did complain to the host who credited our drinks, so that left us with a better experience. But other than convenient location near Moscone Center and maybe for drinks, sadly, I would not recommend this restaurant.
We went here for Thanksgiving. The food was very nice and we enjoyed the family-style service but it wasn't quite worth the $85 set menu price. We really enjoyed the ambience and the service was good, just think the price didn't quite reflect the standard of the food. It would be a good place to go for date night or business dinner.
We went to Trace on whim, and was surprised at how good the food was! Hotel food is often a hit or miss experience.
The fresh bread selection will wet your appetite while you wait for your food. We ordered Shanghai noodles with seafood, Wild Salmon, the burger, and Branzino fish.
We brought a bottle of wine (corkage $25) but the wine selection looked great as well.
The ambiance is very upscale & modern - almost nighclubish. The servers were very attentive to our needs. I loved the overall experience and would recommend this restaurant for not only visitors to SF but also to locals. The prices are reasonable given the restaurant is in the heart of the city.
We will definitely be back!
Ok, so the decor is quite modern and looks like a club with a DJ. But the first floor restaurant (mercifully quiet) serves up tasty contemporary cuisine that is really well prepared. Savory sauces, every entree delivered hot and promptly. Our server Roger went out of his way to accomodate some special requests. Well executed, small list of choices makes it likely that everything is fresh as can be. They say that they like to source locally organic and sustainably. Not everything is organic but everything is fresh and tasty. BTW the breads were ultra fresh and maybe baked in house. Don't let the hotel setting put you off, this is fine place for a nice meal.
