Trace Ratings and Reviews
Food was great quality for the price. I had a great waiter with excellent recommendations. Very good Chicken Marsala and he tried to tempt me with some awfully good looking desserts, but I managed to hold my ground! It's a little noisy but that may have been due to the groups.
Thanksgiving dinner in a restaurant can be a disaster. My experience at Trace was just the opposite! I had the traditional turkey dinner with all the side dishes. The quantity and quality of the food was exceptional and the price was very low compared to what other restaurants were offering for Thanksgiving dinner. Based on my Thanksgiving dinner experience, I will definitely go back to Trace for a non-holiday meal.
This was our second visit and unfortunately it wasn’t great. Service thoughtout was poor for the price. Charcuterie was an A+ meat provider but poorly presented, no mustards, and just thrown together with arugula on top. The waiter wasn’t sure what was what. The chicken breast main seemed a bit dry. The bronzino, normally a wonderful fish served whole was only one side and seemed precooked and heated. The waiter asked if I knew how the fish was as served so I was disappointed when it was not served how bronzino is normally served. Too bad.
The Resturant was quite empty and we had fabulous service. The prices were high $14 for 4 oysters and $19 for 2 midsize scallops. We really loved these two starters. The main we had was hanger steak with polenta and greens for $36 the meat and greed were not very good at all.
We arrived an hour earlier than our reservation because our plans changed, and they were very accommodating! The service was impeccable, checked in very often and refilled waters and drinks, but still gave us space to enjoy ourselves. The Brussels
Sprouts share dish was so delicious! Portions were actually quite large. Entrees were delicious but I was more impressed with the smaller plates. You could easily serve two people with 2-3 appetizers instead of entrees. The hotel is across the street from Yerba Buena gardens. We'll be back for a drink and light bite again soon!
While I had a great experience the menu was very limited and major trendy. Ended up getting a burger because it was really the only thing on the menu that I could make sense of. The location, ambiance, and availability through Open Table drove our decision to meet here.
Upon arrival we were told the kitchen was about to close, at 10:30 am, and seemed to annoy the staff for our inconvenience even though we had a reservation for this time. The food was fine and the Bloody Mary was nice, but the service was not ideal. Will not return.
Trace was a pleasant surprise as It exceeded our expectations in both food and service. The service was competently executed with a knowledgeable waiter and capable service. Generally, hotel restaurants provide the same boring menus that are almost chain-like but the selections at Trace are comparable to any good restaurant in San Francisco. The menus are priced at the higher end but the portion sizes are not small resulting in a good value. Well worth another visit.
I was a bit disappointed. The food was good, but you can get great food in the Bay Area very easily. The prices were high. The wait staff was very very nice and efficient so no complaints there. The dining room and the bar area are cold colors and hard edges. The dining room is not all that attractive. I didn't hate it, but I wouldn't go back. There are just so many better restaurants in SF that this one isn't worth the time.
We purchased the deal from Travelzoo to try the tasting menu at Trace. We ordered half a bottle of wine with our courses, and even with the deal, our bill was still over $100! For the main course, I ordered the halibut which was tasty and my husband ordered the skirt steak which was bland and unexciting! The restaurant is located conveniently near Moscone Center, but there are other places to try before I'll come back to this place even though the service was great.
We bought Travelzoo coupons to try their food. Everything was good but when it comes to their seafood, they are very weak. We were told that the scallops were wonderful but when we got it, it was too salty. The wild halibut was definitely frozen as it has that frozen taste to it and the salmon was really fishy. However, the meats were all very good. Need to improve on their seafood.
Both Michael Bauer and Patricia Unterman, local San Francisco food critics, reviewed Trace favorably. However, neither found the atmosphere comfortable. Keeping this in mind, we sat away from the bar area on a hopping Saturday night. We found the service excellent, the wine list good, the food quality very good, and it was comfortable. Portion sizes are large, although expensive. A satisfying meal can be constructed with a few drinks, the share plates and appetizers. Although the Mains are prepared very well, they are standard fare: flank steak, burger, salmon, halibut, etc. Overall it was a satisfying experience and the food is very well executed.
Pedicab took us to Tres by mistake which would make us 10+ minutes late for our 7pm reservation. Tried repeatedly to call Trace to ask them to hold our reservation. No one answered the phone.
We arrived to ear deafening music in the bar next to an empty hostess stand. The nearly empty Friday 7pm restaurant should have been a clue....
After at least a 3 minute wait, we asked to be seated as far away from the bar as possible.
Our halibut was deliciously prepared atop a bed of spinach under which was a cold, curdled tomato based sauce along with a side a of baby cold shriveled carrots.
Very disappointing...our server coldly asked if I wanted something else (I didn't)...
There were some really creative items on the menu that I've not seen before. A quinoa appetizer infused with goat cheese topped with stone fruits? Fantastic!!!!
The service was completely outstanding. We quite like and appreciated Chee (sp) our server. Full of information and very helpful in ordering. He really knew the menu.
Celebrating our 7yr anniversary at TRACE.
Food was delicious but our server made the experience memorable. Damien was very attentive to even the slightest details. He checked in regularly and made sure we were comfortable & satisfied.
We started with mimosas ( of course) and coffee.
I ordered the madame croque - which was adorned with the perfectly poached egg that oozed over once it has been broken.
My partner ordered the braised beef. The Beef was done to perfection, it was Moist and just melts in your mouth! He beef was a great compliment to the creamy polenta that it sat on.
We finished up the meal with a carrot cake to share.
To sum up the brunch: it was a perfect way to celebrate an anniversary.
Thank you Damien!
