TRACE Ratings and Reviews
We had a reservation and the restaurant didn't bother to tell us it had closed due to weather. We came to the restaurant in inclement conditions and would have otherwise made different dining plans. A simple courtesy notification would have been expected. Very poor customer service.
This place should not be tucked away on the second floor of a hotel- food, decor, service are all top notch and TRACE deserves an equal, physical presence with the other fine establishments in the immediate area. After immersing yourself in the fine arts scene, bypass the restaurants that you can see (and have to wait for a table) and head inside the W for this gem.
The service here was absolutely horrible. It was like we were not even there. Also,
the food took forever. I made the mistake of thinking the buffet was ready at 1000 when it was actually 1100. We ordered our food around 1015 and it did not come out until 1100. We could have just waiting for the buffet all along. The food was actually pretty good when it actually came but I will not go back here again.
We arrived for an early dinner to celebrate my moms birthday, but we're running 10 minutes late. We called six times before anyone answered. We arrived and there were only 7 other tables. There was no hostess to greet us and the bartender didn't help initially, but after a minute of standing around awkwardly, he sat us. It was 20 minutes before I got up to try and find a waiter. I found one, and apparently she was the only one for all seven tables. On a Saturday night. Eventually we got our drinks and orders taken, but everything was incredibly slow. Food and drinks were just ok when we eventually got them.
I hardly ever leave reviews, but this was a particularly bad experience.
The bartender was rude and gossiped about me and my party before we arrived. He had no idea some of my party had arrived and was listening to him talk. When we arrived we asked to be seated he said we couldn't be seated without our party. He then went on to lecture us in a very condescending and saracastic tone. I advised him that he was being rude and he became argumentative. My friend confirmed this and we left. It was just unprofessional how he behaved....it was my birthday.
Waited too long for apps then entree came while we were in the middle of eating the apps. Sent those back until we were done with apps and when entrees came again, it was clear that they had simply stuck it under a heat lamp. The grouper was dry and crispy and the risotto was crunchy. The wine tasted liked vinegar. Very disappointing! So , I spent $150 for a salad and 2 apps. Won't be back.
Everyone here is very friendly. I think they were low on staff. Our table wasn't ready so we sat at the bar for 20 min without getting drinks until the very end. Our waiter took an appetizer order that didn't come until right before our food was served. We also didn't get water poured until our main entrees arrived. We ordered drinks that came late. The charcuterie appetizer is delicious. I had the ribs which are tasty but a bit on the firm side. I asked for a toilette for my hands - never came. Everyone else enjoyed the food - fresh and tasty. Unfortunately the service was noticeably deficient.
Food was better than it had been before, but still pretty heavy (lots of fried stuff). We had two vegetarians and options were fairly limited as was the wine list (really should go beyond California!). However, nice waitress, really tasty salads and flavorful entrees made for a fun evening.
This was our first visit to Trace and it was quite disappointing. Unlike some of the other reviews, our service was VERY good. Our server was very attentive and understood that we were in a rush to make a show and she made every effort to get our food order quickly, while not seeming rushed. My issue with Trace was the food itself. The Shrimp and grits were extremely runny and lacked any taste. The grilled redfish was dry. The pimento mac n cheese was also very dry and lacked any real taste of pimento. Unfortunately, there are too many other choices in this area of Midtown so we won't be back.
