Wonderful dinner and excellent service. Delightful.
Very intimate, close seating. We fortunately had wonderful dining neighbors, but if our neighbors were loud the experience may have been very negative.
We had the tasting menu with the wine pairing, and it was one of the best meals we’ve had in Philadelphia. The waiter was very attentive and highly knowledgeable. Highly recommended.
Oyster appetizer was overly salted obscuring the oyster itself. Foie Gras was too well done and flavorless.
Halibut portion was small and undistinguished in its presentation. The lamb entree was over cooked. The
beignet dessert was satisfactory. The overpriced bottle of bordeaux was served chilled. Restaurant is noisy and the bathroom requires climbing a steep staircase, which is perilous for older patrons. Service was professional. Too many other places that are better. We were very disappointed.
Our server Brendan was terrific! The restaurant is very pretty.
We did the tasting menu with paired wines for a birthday celebration and were disappointed by that. Perhaps we should have ordered from the menu?
For the first time -- we've been to Townsend a handful of times before -- we tried the $85 tasting menu. It was interesting and good. Service was professional, as usual, except for a lamb chop ("rack of lamb") that the deliverer called lamb shank. Townsend's take on the bouillabaisse appetizer and the duck confit cannelloni were particularly good.
Real problem, in the upstairs room, was noise so loud (Open Table's euphemism, "energetic," is way too kind) that it distracted from our ability to enjoy our meal. This wasn't the case previously, though perhaps then it wasn't so busy.
Amazing service, creative menu. Sea scallop and beef tartare were amazing.
interesting menu. Server did wonderful job without being obtrusive. He nicely spaced courses and did a wonderful job explaining menu. scallops best I ever had. Only disappointment was weak coffee.
Celebrating 48 years of marriage. The food and the service is always the best. Great drinks and wine selection. Our favorite restaurant
The food and service was excellent. The only issue was we went in the heart of summer and their air conditioning doesn’t work well. The room had to have been 85 degrees. We ordered the 5 course tasting menu so it took 2 hours by the end we were begging for the check.
This is your spot for a work dinner, a family celebration, or a simple date night out. The staff continually surprise and delight (including the bar team), the kitchen delivers the freshest and most innovative ingredients that make every meal an experience, and the atmosphere is generally perfect. You can't go wrong!
Well unfortunately I’m not going to rush back there. The evening started out great with tasty cocktails and delicious appetizers. Then it took at least 30 mins for our entrees to come out with no explanation or heads up of an issue. Just sitting and waiting with nobody coming over to even refill water glasses.
And then of course when the entrees came out the duck wasn’t hot and the halibut was over cooked (which is just terrible, to keep the review pc). I’m guessing the dishes were cooked and just sat on the pass, which is inexcusable. They shouldn’t even have been sent out. Hard to chalk something like that up to just a bad night but you never know what’s going on in the kitchen.
We were too polite to send the dishes back and really just wanted to leave at that point, after waiting so long. The server was polite and thankful for the feedback and I know you have a great spot but there are also many other amazing restaurants in town to visit before coming back.
Great food, great service, great bar. We’re adding Townsend to our regular rotation
Amazing. Sauces/ presentation on point. Music actually was amazing. Our server was attentive and informed. We were lucky enough to get the table we requested.
The sundried tomatoes in the sweetbreads was odd, and the en cocotte component of the lamb dish felt phoned in but those are minuscule details which won’t prevent us from coming back again and again. Thank you!
We had an absolutely excellent experience. We did the tasting menu, and the food, wine, and server could not have been better.
We had a fantastic dinner at Townsend! Inventive cuisine and superior service from our waitperson, Steve. We're the sort of diners who have LOTS of questions about nearly everything, and Steve was completely informed and happy to fill us in on all the details of Townsend's dishes. We certainly would make Townsend a regular dining destination if we lived in Philly! Thanks, Townsend and Steve, for going the extra mile for your patrons!
We had the tasting menu paired with wines. It was a pleasurable experience. The staff, including Mike the bartender and Steve our server, was excellent. We will be back. Our friends from out of town loved the atmosphere.
Wonderful dishes, inspired, creative, unique, delicious!
We have been to Townsend several times and each time the food is completely different but always exceptional. This time, we did the wine pairing, which I highly recommend. The chef's tasting menu reflects fresh, seasonal ingredients and included zucchini blossoms, sea bass, and pork osso bucco, to name just a few of the delicious courses. Our server, Steve, was very knowledgeable about the menu and the wines, which added to our enjoyment of the evening. Outstanding!
This a superb restaurant. One of the best dining experiences of my life and I was a server in a four diamond restaurant for years. The entire staff was exceptional. The server was especially remarkable. He was genuinely personable while being a top professional. He made our night unique and one that we will remember for life.
Food was amazing!
Came here on a last minute date with my bf looking for an amazing French cuisine experience. We weren’t thrilled. Chose Townsend over Laurel simply because they had a late reservation available. We arrived a few minutes after our reservation, were seated in a quiet and empty room in the back, ordered our food quickly and didn’t dawdle eating.
Our server hit all of the points, was polite, attentive, and not invasive. He checked with us promptly after each course had arrived to be sure we were satisfied. It seemed, however, that we were his last table as he rushed through the points of service. He was uninterested in answering our one question about the food, he did so, but in haste. Better service would have enhanced the value and experience of the meal. Next time just pretend you care, bud.
Our amuse-bouche of mint and pea soup could’ve stayed in the kitchen. Not hot or cold - the room temperature gritty green liquid did nothing to entice the palate and left me questioning how long it had been sitting out. The highlight for me was the first course hamachi option. The flavors exploded in my mouth and each subsequent bite was equally delicious. I almost forgave the awkward dish in which it was served- albeit beautiful, the shape of the bowl made scooping the tiny morsels difficult. My next course of escargot and fava beans was enjoyable, but the soupy chicken jus overwhelmed the other components. My final course was a seared halibut with veggies and bacon lardons served in an uni cream. The fish was perfectly prepared and tasted wonderful with its accompanying flavors.
My date had the delightful beef tartare, followed by sweetbreads in bone marrow and finally, the lamb two ways. His dessert was the second highlight: a light and fluffy puffed pastry with a subtle sweetness.
Overall, I found the menu to be a bit heavy for the summer, and for what I expect from French style fare. We’ll return, after trying Laurel.
I took my boyfriend there for his birthday and asked for happy birthday to be written on the plate for the desert. Not only did they do that, but they wrote it on the menu! They gave us the best spot and made his birthday incredibly memorable.
Townsend is a delightful and delicious place! We sat upstairs in the bay window overlooking the street. It was comfortable, quiet, and light-filled. The food was excellent. The chef is really trying to make something special. The service was friendly, prompt, knowledgeable, and attentive but not overbearing. Altogether a delightful experience and highly recommended!
We have dined at Townsend several times and the experience has always been outstanding. The service was exceptional. I cannot say enough good things about that aspect. The food was once again terrific and consistent through all three courses.
The BEST. Incredible food, service. The lighting! Everything. We loved it. Romantic too.
Outstanding. The food was beyond wonderful. Service was excellent!!
Interesting and tasty food. Very good service. And (at 5:15) quiet enough for our elderly guests to hear the conversation.
It is always a pleasant experience to dine at Townsend. The staff is accommodating, including having menus with the name of the birthday person, keeping a record of food allergies of diners, etc. The food and service are always excellent, and we have never been disappointed.
Finally got the chance to visit the flagship behind Oloroso-a restauarant I’ve been a steady evangelist for since its opening. And, gratefully, it delivered. A beautiful space, a well-curated wine list, and beautiful, refreshing takes on traditional French cuisine. Go here.
excellent food. excellent service. nice atmosphere. pricey but worth it.
Everything we ate was phenomenal, the Hamachi and Oysters were out unbelievable!
I love their fish dishes, done to perfection,
and I never miss their chocolate soufflé— so chocolate-y!
Everything was amazing! Perfection from start to finish
The evening was fantastic from start to finish. I had contacted Townsend before our dinner to arrange to have a special cocktail for my boyfriend's birthday and had it ready and waiting with a printed out, customized recipe. That on top of delicious food, the best bottle of wine we've ever had and after dinner cognac and dessert wine made it a night we will not soon forget. Thank you to Townsend for the fabulous hospitality! Can't wait to visit again!
Wonderful ! Beautifully prepared and presented. A gem of a restaurant.
That was our second time. The food and service are always amazing. Both times we enjoyed the tasting menu! Always an amazing night at Townsend !
The meal was outstanding. It was more outstanding than the last time I was there!
We enjoyed Easter dinner; presentation was good, server was attentive and not overbearing; primary complaint is value for money and portion sizes. One lamb chop is an entree? Really? Other portions were appropriate, but did you need to source lamb from Colorado? Is that why it was a skimpy portion?
