The food was delicious!
Food was great as well s service.
My friend and I had a wonderful birthday dinner at your new location. I couldn't have asked for more!
The food continues to be wonderful, as was our wait person, but the new location is noisier and not as elegant as the E. Passyunk one. They need to put an enclosure around the front door for the winter or diners (and their food) on the ground floor will be hit with a blast of cold air every time someone enters the restaurant.
Food as always awesome. Location at old location was much better, more intimate. Food definitely delivers
The food was a bit pricey, but it was excellent. Everything from the appetizer (escargot), to the main course (Venison), to the dessert (poached pear), was delicious. Service started out a bit slow, but picked up after drinks arrived. I will definitely recommend it!
We live in the area and dine out regularly. We waited a few weeks before making a reservation to allow for the kitchen to work out their details.
We enjoyed the food .I had the duck which was not tender. The vegetable presentation was delicious. My partner had the filet special which I tasted, and was good.
The desert was not good carmel and apple and gelatin ....no flavor.
We had a great meal; the wait staff were very attentive. Good value fir what they serve. The only complaint was that the coffee was cold.
Delicious food! With great service and atmosphere
Would recommend and visit again
Wonderful meal —experience, really— at Townsend. Beef tartare and escargot, scallops and squid ink risotto, duet of venison (tenderloin and braised shoulder) with foie gras, crispy branzino with trout roe, and of course desert. Lovely, delicious meal. Rich and flavorful. Wonderful treat.
door front seating not optimal
good value for the price
The food was fantastic, the ambiance was lovely and our server, Mary, was great. It was an excellent experience.
The food at this restaurants new location was good. My oysters and duck were both very tasty. The restaurant is attractive and diners can hear themselves. However the service left much to be desired. We had reserved a table a month in advance. When we arrived we were told the only table was right by the door on a cold night. Even after I explained that my husband had recently had a serious accident we were not accommodated in any way. The hostess and manager were snippy and aloof at best. We were told to wait in the bar where there was no seating. My friend who was with us commented that a compel drink would have gone a long way to soothing us but of course none wax offered. The alternative table that we sat at was also cold. All this could have been solved by putting in an extra outer door. If not for the service (the waitress recommended a nice wine but did not bring it to the table until after we had finished our appetizers) I might return now I doubt it.
Flavorful dining and was a bit overwhelming for my tastes. I like the new location and wonderful server who helped us with the menu.
Management will need to address the front door which opens wide and cold air rushes in. This is a real problem
The food was absolutely perfect. I had a tuna carpaccio appetizer that was truly sensational. Attentive service. A lovely evening for our date. I would say, though, that we were glad to be sitting upstairs, as the cold air by the front door and the noise downstairs would have detracted from our evening.
Townsend service began terrifically but as the restaurant became busy the service became disorganized. Food was interesting and nicely presented but not everything worked. For example the gnocchi were fairly good but there were hard lumps of ? Prosciutto. The scallops were excellent. We wished for a salad.
We had the tasting menu: oysters, octopus risotto, bronzino, duck, and calvados pot aux creme. All excellent but nothing we’re likely to remember next year. The dessert was the standout of the evening. Excellent wines by the glass. Pleasant environment suitable for conversation. Excellent service.
Server Megin was the best!!!
Best duck ever the gnocchi dish was superb also great cocktails at the bar
Same good food, but atmosphere and service are not nearly as good. Perhaps a bad night, but was not the special experience I expect. Scallop and Halibut courses were excellent. Despite having roasted oysters online menu, they offered only raw...and declined my request for roasted (despite only 5 people in the restaurant). Space looks empty and not finished. The value pre fixed menu offerings were not offered until I inquired. Hopefully they get it together and return to what was once one of my Philadelphia favorites.
Great place and awesome service. The octopus risotto was a bit salty but they exchanged it without any issues. My venisin dish was a bit dry so I would recommend sticking with fish. The escargot was terrific and so was the scallops. Pricy but great
The food and drinks were excellent and our server was very pleasant and added to our dining experience. We can't wait to go back.
Birthday dinner.. wonderful food and ambiance
Worth the steep price -- very unique flavors and options, even considering the great food options in Philadelphia. The wait staff were friendly, helpful, and attentive. Really an exceptional eating experience. Excited about the move of this wonderful restaurant to our neighborhood.
Excellent experience. A great menu that was well executed.
Though our waitress was attentive food service was slow.
Food was generally good though the risotto was too salty.
Desserts were unexceptional. Printing happy birthday on the menu was a very nice touch
The food was lovely, and the setting is elegant. It got loud as the evening went on, but no more so than is typical for Center City.
Not up to the standard of the previous Townsend....location is convenient for the neighborhood folks.
Fabulous meal and a lovely atmosphere suitable for a special occasion!
It was just okay overall. I ate at the previous location at least 3 times and that was absolutely perfect. I am not impressed with this new spot especially the ambiance. The ambiance and the whole experience does not match the price point. Almost as if it’s over priced. Hopefully something can be done to improve the look and feel. The food was okay. The previous location was cozy and more intimate. And the price was right for the whole experience. My favorite meal was the steak. I always ordered the steak. Unfortunately that no longer exists on the menu. Maybe it will come back at some point.
The new location is very nice, but most importantly the food remains outstanding. Only issue is the lack of lighting, making reading the menu almost impossible.
Preferred the old bar and parlor. Food and service top notch!
It was much too noisy. Something needs to be done to dampen the sound.
Food and wine were very good, so were the friendly and professional serving staff.
Server overly aggressive
Acted more like a salesperson
Halibut was very salty
Inedible for one guest
Menu limited and not very customer friendly
We have been to the Townsend in South Philly in the past and enjoyed it as 4 to 5 stars. This new Townsend on Walnut is even better! My wife and I celebrated our 14th anniversary with a marvelous dinner. We were greeted by menus with "Happy Anniversary" on the masthead. Let me say that the Service was impeccable, delightful and very professional - 5 START for BETH G! To start - Cocktails; Manhattan for wife, and "Catch me if you Can" for me. Appetizers - Pork Rillette and Sweet Jesus Oysters; everything awesome! Entrée - Venison and Halibut; double AWESOME! Dessert - Pot De Crème for both of us; which was Heaven on Earth. And Then with all of this wonderful food - Glasses of Port on the house! Wine with dinner was a bottle of Maestro Garnacha Rose - excellent for our choice of food and palette. I do have a suggestion for the space, which my wife and I liked - we sat by the entrance which on a rainy cold night was bothersome as people came in and did not bother to shut the door. A suggestion for bread basket - warm bread before serving. GO GO GO to this wonderful place!
Value for dollars spent not there. Limited selection, inconsistently executed.
We will go back but would hope they revise their wine selection in the “by glass” choices. We were very disappointed with the quality/price but they were gracious to exchange. The starters were good but not great. Our main courses excellent. The service we felt needed a boost in sophistication. This place has a lot of potential and we wish them luck.
Menu options were varied, and all lovely choices. I wished they had a wine pairing for their courses.
We enjoyed the simple but elegant dining room. Mary our server was attentive but not hovering. She allowed us to savor and enjoy our meal but appeared when wine or water needed refilling.
We ate three courses each. The escargots were earthy and tasty. I would get it again. The Artic Char was refreshing and a great beginning to a meal. Also would be on my repeat menu.
On second course we had the sea scallops and the potato gnocchi. The sea scallops had so much flavor. They were some of the best scallops I’ve ever had. The gnocchi was delicious as well.
On the last course we had the venison and duck. The venison was peppery and delicious. The duck was also well prepared and tasty. My only negative comment on the last course was that it was larger than I am accustomed at a French restaurant and therefore I was unable to savor every bite.
The wine list was a great addition to the meal. We started with a Chardonnay and switched to a Cabernet Sauvignon with our more hearty last course. It was a perfect combination.
This restaurant should definitely be on your must try list. When back in Philadelphia, we will return.
