My recent experience at Townsend was nothing less than superb and having eaten at wonderful restaurants around the world, I must say it is the best experience I have had in a decade. The meal and wine pairings were absolutely incredible. We selected the chef's tasting and wine pairing. This was a celebration for a dear friend's milestone birthday. The ambience is just wonderful and suitable for any important occasion or even business meals. I can't write enough good things other than to suggest everyone experience it. The even was elevated to perfection by Steve who orchestrated our experience while he was perfectly attentive but never intrusive. He took great care in answering our questions. He was so genuinely sincere and complimentary about the restaurant, Chef that it was lovely to see someone take such care to make our experience memorable. He provided detailed and engaging descriptions of the food, its preparation and the information about the selected wine pairings. I can't say enough good things other than that I strongly recommend that everyone support this establishment and make it your "go-to" place especially for those important occasions.
One of Philly's best
Just got back from Paris enjoying several Alan Ducasse meals, but was still very impressed with Townsend. So great to have such talent and finesse so close to home! The foie gras, scallops finished with orange cream and the chicken with autumnal veggies (and more foie gras!) were all outstanding. We'll be back and soon! Thank you for a fabulous dining experience!
We arrived at 7:30 to have a drink at the bar. We had an 8:15 reservation but didn’t get seated until almost 9:00 pm. We had 2 glasses of champagne at the bar but since it was taking so long we ordered a bottle of red. When we got seated we found out they had a 5 course tasting menu with a wine paring so we opted for that. We still had half a bottle of wine left but told them to take it way (it was so so). A few parts of the meal were good. The first course was a cheese plate, not very good. The best course was a small orange squash stuffed with pork. It was creative and flavorful. The desert was not a desert but an after dinner drink which I did mot like. At the very end the waiter said (doing me a favor) that they were not going to charge us for the entire bottle of red we didn’t drink but only for 2 glasses. Really. Just take the entire bottle off the bill. The wholesalw cost of the bottle was $15 max and we had to wait 45 minutes for a table. Might try it again but hoping for a better experience.
The service was superb and the food was fantastic. We had the tasting menu with the wine pairing which was great, but I would like to go back and order off the a la carte menu, as it looked amazing too.
My wife and I went to dinner with another couple to celebrate my birthday. We had a wonderful time. Service was great. All of the dishes were well prepared and innovative. The only improvement that I could ask for would be larger serving sizes for the appetizers. They were on the small size. Otherwise things were near perfect.
If in the mood for traditional French cuisine this is outstanding. Tables a bit cramped and furnishings a bit worn. Atmosphere ok if lucky not to have loud conversationalist. Wine list on high side. Nevertheless, quality of food does much to over come other deficiencies.
My wife and I have eaten at some of the best restaurants in Europe, Canada as well as the US. We have to say that our evening at the Townsend for our anniversary dinner puts this restaurant among our top ten culinary experiences. One of our hobbies is to rate restaurants for :
A) Food quality
B) Food Taste.
C) Food Presentation
We awarded at least nine out of ten on all six criteria.
Just be warned: We had heard that this restaurant, being popular, requires reservations well in advance. We made ours a month ahead.
Lovely place and food is exceptional - we had the tasting menu and were clear that one of us had a food restriction. Problem was one dish we received as "salmon" turned out to be lamb from another table (I know, how did we not know - it was very small within a larger dish). Anyway, while they were very apologetic, it's still a mistake that should not have been made at any place - let alone one of this quality.
This is our third visit to Townsend.
Always an exceptional meal with professional and attentive service.
Pricey, but worth it.
We'll be back!
Townsend is always outstanding. Wine pairings on the tasting menu could not have been better!
Always great food, excellent service, and great ambiance. The wine, beer, and cocktail list is fantastic. Everything on the inventive menu is always perfectly executed and delicious. One of my favorite restaurants in Philly.
Excellent food, knowledgeable service, unpretentious ambiance. Perfect for special occasions, date night or the more regular visits (if price is not a deterrent)
Wonderful meal. Every dish had a great depth of flavor and taste. Can’t wait to go back!
Noise level was unacceptable
Overall disappointing despite good service and a nice room. Food was not exciting, a little warm and not very creative in our view. Wine list was just ok and really not worth the trip for us
Fabulous menu selection. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Delicious drinks. Most amazing chef. My favorite restaurant.
It was a nice little restaurant but my husband and I were both underwhelmed by the food, especially given the price. The Foie Gras is very good. Everything else was a bit disappointing.
Chef's Tasting Menu is a tour de force, with each course topping the last and creating a culinary symphony. Service was impeccable, revealing a service team that is not only professional and friendly, but passionately knowledgeable about every facet of your dining.
Food was good. Service was abominable.
The best meal we have had I a while, unfortunately we waited an hour and 10 minutes for our table but I must say it was worth the wait! The manager, hostess and bartender were very apologetic and comped us some drinks and appetizers. The food was delish, the cocktails were special and the ambiance was nice. We will be back.
Had an absolutely wonderful meal here. We splurged and had three courses plus dessert. My husband was a little disappointed with wine, but all else was fantastic, including the service.
Tasting menu was fantastic!
I had high hope for this place based on the reviews. Overall I was disappointed at both the quality of the food and service. At this price point, there are many other better choices in Philly. Will be go back.
Went to Townsend on Friday night with a group of friends. We all ordered the 5-course tasting menu with wine pairings for each course. Oh. My. God. It was absolutely amazing!!! Very creative dishes, and our waiter, Steve, was knowledgeable and entertaining. Bravo, Townsend! You knocked it out of the park!
Outstanding in every way. Phenomenal, accommodating, knowledgable, and attentive service was also unintrusive and never hurrying or pushy. Enjoyed our dinner very much!
Excellent meal and service. Wonderful cocktails and wine list. Perfect for our anniversary.
Our meal at Townsend was outstanding. We were welcomed, the server gave us the menu (which had Happy Anniiversary imprinted at the top!), and answered any suggestions needed. Quality of food was excellent as was the service.
Was a little disappointed that we were not informed about the prix fix menu before ordering. Overall the food was superb.
It is a favorite place for special occasions. Great food in a relax intimate setting couple with helpful and gracious servers.
I'm so glad i found this. Best French food in Philadelphia. Impeccable service. Quaint and sophisticated. I've already made another reservation. Thank you so much Townsend, my new favorite dinning spot.
It is a joy dining at Townsend. Such a gem. The lovely room downstairs with a fireplace is one of the few cozy, intimate places you can dine at these days in Philly, where you can actually hear your dining companions. White tablecloths! Great place for a date. Food is sublime. The hamachi appetizer is TO DIE FOR. Our first bottle wine was clearly "off", but the waitress quickly got us something else that was perfect.
My new fiancée and I had a lovely dinner to celebrate our engagement. We enjoyed the tasting menu and everything was fantastic. The food was delicious, the wine was unique and amazing, the service and ambiance were perfect. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion!
The food was creative and delicious. The service was wonderful. The cocktails and wine were excellent. Relaxed atmosphere in a fine dining spot makes it a perfect place for an enjoyable night out. It's so nice to be in a restaurant where you can have a conversation without raising your voice and the overall noise level is relatively low. We were celebrating my son's 30th birthday and they printed a personalized happy birthday message at the top of the menu. :)
An outstanding meal from start to finish. My wife decided that the roasted chicken was the best chicken she's ever had. Glad I ordered the braised rabbit. Scallops and hamachi were both excellent. Desserts were on par with the main meal items.
hands down one of the top 2 restaurants in PHL, along with Vernick, in terms of food. Without a doubt number 1 in PHL in terms of the staff -- uniformly professional, knowledgeble, accessible, and just plain nice
My date and i both ordered the tasting menu. The food was just so so. There really wasn't any course that was that good. And it was very expensive. Overrated and overpriced.
This was my wife and my first visit. We had the tasting menu. It was wonderful. The food was some of the best I have had in a long time. The saucing was very intense and complex. Our server was wonderful -- friendly, very helpful. We were in the second floor dining room -- it was very comfortable. Even with the room full of diners it was easy to hear and carry on a conversation. There is a parking lot right across the street. The cocktails were great, very creative. Can't wait to go back
We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Townsend. A Quiet and intimate atmosphere which was perfect for a romantic evening. Our waitress was friendly, and knowledgeable about the food and wine list. The food was delicious and beautifully plated. The rest of the staff was so warm and friendly as well. We will be returning on our next trip to Philly.
Everything was perfect except for the size of the portions which were on the small side. This was surprising considering the pricing.
