From the Emeryville fireman's dream of a Speakeasy that he built in 1926, to Steve Vernetti, the original Townhouse Speakeasy bartender who along with his family ran it for 35 plus years after Prohibition ended, the TH has been and remains an East Bay institution.
Next came the 70's and 80's when country and western bars, music and dancing were at their peak and the theme at the TH. This period is fondly remembered by Cal graduates who continue to visit the Townhouse and reminisce about their dancing days but do not miss the peanut shells and sawdust on the floor.
1990 was the year that Ellen Hope Rosenberg, the current executive chef and owner, took over an ailing TH and resurrected it from top to bottom. From her inspired American-California style menu to the maintenance of the original construction both in and out. This is a restaurant that has a unique story whose food and ambiance is as authentic as the staff are courteous and genuine.

Parking details
We have a private lot next to the restaurant with space for 30 cars. Unfortunately the lot can be full and the restaurant is only a third full as many people arrive separately. Street parking is reasonably ample and not metered.

Public transit
The free Emery-go-Round that operates from the MaCarthur BART Station will drop you off at 59th Street and Hollis.
This puts you at a distance of one and 1/2 blocks from the restaurant. You only need to walk one block up 59th, towards the Oakland Hills, to Doyle and make a right. The Townhouse will be on your left under the big Redwood tree.

This is my new go to place!! The food was off the charts (had the warm Brussels sprouts salad, the calamari, the artichoke dip, the veal and the pork). The service was amazing (great recommendations).

Definitely an off night. I have eaten here many times as a place to get good food and service. But not this time. I ordered the crab cakes special, which came out without any sauce. They were dry, and the broccoli was lukewarm at best. After waiting for several minutes, our waiter came over and quickly noticed there was no sauce. I assumed that recognition meant he would immediately get some. After waiting for 10 minutes, with now a cold entre, he was not to be found so I called the restaurant from my table to ask for some service. Within minutes I finally got the needed sauce, but by then the meal was a disaster.

As for my partner, she asked for a very light dressing on her steak salad. Instead, it was drenched in the dressing. Another disappointment.

While we got comped for the entres, and an apology from the waiter, I need to wait a while and will try it again.

We've dined a handful of times at this place over the past year. The first time, everything was great - food, service, ambiance. The last few times have been disappointing. The food has been just OK. The host, a tall man, has been cold, unwelcoming and unfriendly; he acts as if he's doing you a favor by letting you into his dining room. I have seen him turn on the charm for parties he appears to know, but we are not one of those. This last time the wait person was totally unhelpful on menu choices, and we had to wait forever for our food, way longer than other parties who arrived and ordered well after we did. When I asked our wait person to check on the food, he refused to do so and said that ours was taking longer because we had ordered appetizers. When I pointed out that other later arriving parties had already gotten their food, he just shined me on. With all the amazing restaurants in the Bay Area, there's no need to tolerate OK food and poor service.

This is a fun, lively restaurant. We think it strikes the right balance of a good meal and fun ambience. They have a great staff and do a terrific job without being pretentious. This is one of our favorite restaurants.

This was a delicious place. The drinks were great and the food melted in your mouth. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a wait to get some bread -- we came in very hungry already. Overall I would rate it 9/10!

I love this restaurant! The food is great and the wait staff is wonderful!! The only down side is that it is a little loud but the vibe is still nice! So in my view, the loudness can be overlooked. Go to the Townhouse, you’ll have an excellent dining experience!

Me and my boyfriend were stunned by the quality of the food. He said he just tasted the best baby back ribs, he loved the garlic fries and was amazed by the taste of the brocolli lol will be going back again on our next special date!

Service was great. However, food and drinks were ok for the price.

An excellent meal all around! My kids were thrilled to eat at a “fancy restaurant”. The servers were terrific, and the food was just amazing. Please keep serving that avocado bruschetta!

Excellent food in an attractive setting. Very good service. Big detraction was noise level, as my husband and I had to shout or repeat most of our conversation, despite being in a corner.

The Townhouse was a favorite of mine when I worked in Emeryville 10 years ago and have been back only a few times. I am happy to report that it is still one of the best restaurants around. Some old friends from the Pacific NW were in Berkeley visiting and I wanted to take them out for a good dinner that was a little different from restaurants up North. It so happened that we had the summer like weather and I thought about going somewhere with a view. They had gone to a waterfront spot earlier and said drinks and snack was horrible. Our dinner was perfect at Townhouse. Food was delicious and our waiter was terriffic! He shared the history of Emeryville and Townhouse with them which they loved. They loved the architechture and interior of the restaurant as well. We shared 3 dishes-- brussel sprout salad, grilled prawns, mashed potatoes and green beans and crabcakes with broccoli. All were fabulous and the portions were perfect. One of the people eats a mostly vegetarian and only fish diet and she said that the menu provided many options. I'll be back again!! Thank you!
