About Townhouse Bar and Grill
From the Emeryville fireman's dream of a Speakeasy that he built in 1926, to Steve Vernetti, the original Townhouse Speakeasy bartender who along with his family ran it for 35 plus years after Prohibition ended, the TH has been and remains an East Bay institution.
Next came the 70's and 80's when country and western bars, music and dancing were at their peak and the theme at the TH. This period is fondly remembered by Cal graduates who continue to visit the Townhouse and reminisce about their dancing days but do not miss the peanut shells and sawdust on the floor.
1990 was the year that Ellen Hope Rosenberg, the current executive chef and owner, took over an ailing TH and resurrected it from top to bottom. From her inspired American-California style menu to the maintenance of the original construction both in and out. This is a restaurant that has a unique story whose food and ambiance is as authentic as the staff are courteous and genuine.

We do not cater on site but will fill to go orders that can be picked up by client.
We have a private lot next to the restaurant with space for 30 cars. Unfortunately the lot can be full and the restaurant is only a third full as many people arrive separately. Street parking is reasonably ample and not metered.
The free Emery-go-Round that operates from the MaCarthur BART Station will drop you off at 59th Street and Hollis.
This puts you at a distance of one and 1/2 blocks from the restaurant. You only need to walk one block up 59th, towards the Oakland Hills, to Doyle and make a right. The Townhouse will be on your left under the big Redwood tree.

Townhouse Bar and Grill Ratings and Reviews
Showed up way early for our reservation and we were promptly seated anyway. Food was on the pricy side for some dishes but everything we ordered was well liked and enjoyed. All the reviews online hyping up the Avocado Bruschetta need to chill. It's literally avocado toast. Bread. Avocado. Balsamic drizzle. LOL don't get me wrong, it tasted good. Not worth going strictly for that dish though, plenty of other delicious menu items.
Parking lot is tight. Ambience is cozy and welcoming. Service was great. Dessert looked amazing however, we didn't order any because we were all too full. The noise level was surprisingly loud for a restaurant with cloth napkins and candlelight but we enjoyed ourselves nonetheless.
Went to this restaurant after reading reviews. It was nice/as described overall. Had a "flaming heart" drink (basically a manhattan) and it was good. Avocado bruschetta was beautiful and tasty. Sweet potato fries also good. My son had the mushroom ravioli and they were tasty. I had the scallops w/fettucine, and sadly, the sauce didn't taste right. Since this was our first time I would have to say the food is uneven... maybe just a bad night, and we enjoyed everything else.
Cocktails are great—tasty and liberal portion —at this comfortable bar and restaurant. Food and service just fine, too. They seem to vary the menu pretty often which also makes it nice. My mushroom ravioli was excellent—wine sauce subtle and creamy. My companion’s smoked chicken risotto was delicious. Loved the beet and goat cheese salad as well.
It's always a pleasure to dine at Towne House Bar and Grill, I have trouble deciding on one dish from the menu and whatever I pick is always delicious. The service is terrific, you never wait for anything and the wait staff knows the menu well and make inspired recommendations. Best of all is the ambiance. Outdoors or inside, any occasion feels special.
Arrived near closing time after a delayed flight into SFO. Looking for a nice spot with great food. Couldn't have found a better place. We were instantly welcomed, a great crowd enjoying their dinners around us, spot on service, and a wonderful menu that filled our desire exactly. Completely unpretentious. Coming back here over and over again.
Always excellent!! Garlic fries are a must as well as the artichoke dip. The stuffed pork chop is heavenly, prime rib melts in your mouth!! Scallops and prawns, outrageous. The drinks are divine!! My go to spot for lunch, special occasions and dinner with friends.
Townhouse Bar and Grill was extremely crowded for a Tuesday night. The tables a super small and crowded into a small space to maximize diners. It was apparent our wait person wanted us to eat and go so he could turn over our table. The food was good, but not exceptional. Very expensive. Daily specials were $35/entree. The exterior is charming, but parking is horrible.
We had an ok experience. The darken tuna was awesome. But the waiter sold us on the specials of the night and we didn’t think of asking how much they were since most plates ranged between 15-25 dollars. The salmon was dry and way to spicy. But ok. The bill. 35 dollars for a regular salmon. I wanted to like this place. Not sure I’m going back.
This was my first visit back in over 5 years and still as great as I remembered. Food was spot on, service timely & friendly and as strange as this sounds, the valet attendant made the day! We decided to go to Townhouse at the last minute and didn't have cash to tip the valet attendant (Townhouse offers free valet parking) - I apologized, asked if he had Venmo, and he smiled "I don't but don't worry about it - everyone deserves a freebie once and awhile, and the fact that you even cared about me is my tip". Talk about customer service!
We went for my birthday and shared the scallops and the ahi entrees... both were lovely flavors combined well. The menu was full of exciting choices, too! The exterior of the building looks like it is from another age - and it is! The historic pictures within evoke wonderful thoughts of the past, but there is nothing old fashioned about the service or the food! We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and I think you will too!
Don't judge the book by its cover, this restaurant has a rich history and was built at the end of the 1800's. From the outside it looks like a small shack, you would never guess that once you step into the entrance.
The service is very friendly and the food is just amazing. We would have been satisfied just eating appetizers for dinner. The crab and artichoke dip was so delicious and filling. Maybe next time.
We used open table to make a reservation, and I am glad we did. Apparently reservations are required to dine here. Reservations are also available online.
If you are in the area you must check this place out!
Great menu and delicious food! Staff was extremely friendly and helpful! My only issue was the noise level inside the restaurant. We had planned to sit outside, but it was too chilly for my 85 yr old mother. Having to talk over other tables during dinner was a definitely a bummer.
We had a wonderful prime rib dinner. The service was really great as they use a team approach to serving so that different staff brought items during the meal. The cocktails were very good and the dinner was excellent. This is our third visit here and it was the best one so we will be back the next time in town.
