From the Emeryville fireman's dream of a Speakeasy that he built in 1926, to Steve Vernetti, the original Townhouse Speakeasy bartender who along with his family ran it for 35 plus years after Prohibition ended, the TH has been and remains an East Bay institution.
Next came the 70's and 80's when country and western bars, music and dancing were at their peak and the theme at the TH. This period is fondly remembered by Cal graduates who continue to visit the Townhouse and reminisce about their dancing days but do not miss the peanut shells and sawdust on the floor.
1990 was the year that Ellen Hope Rosenberg, the current executive chef and owner, took over an ailing TH and resurrected it from top to bottom. From her inspired American-California style menu to the maintenance of the original construction both in and out. This is a restaurant that has a unique story whose food and ambiance is as authentic as the staff are courteous and genuine.

Too noisy to hear person across from me at small table for 2. Left with strained vocal chords on a Tuesday night.

Love this spot! The company I work for is located nearby, so I make sure to stop in for dinner when I am in town. Super fresh, great flavors and a nice wine list are some of the highlights. Always great service. A not miss item is the Avocado Bruschetta - I could honestly eat this for dinner with a small salad. Amazing! Super hip ambiance - can't wait to get back soon!

Nice selection and food was nicely executed. Great crispy calamari and burger/fries. Veal shank was good and while it was nice to see a piccata, the chicken as dry - too bad it wasn’t pork or veal.

We happened to be in the Emeryville area at dinner time and stumbled upon this restaurant. What a wonderful surprise. We both had salads--the Ahi tuna salad and the Thai salad (with steak and mango). Both salads were very good, especially the Thai salad. The salads were served in very generous in portions--plenty for a meal with enough left over to take some home. The cocktails were excellent and we were impressed that a Ron Rubin pinot noir was on the wine menu by the glass, which we enjoyed, as well. The service was excellent. We will be back with friends.

I love this place, my partner and I go there often for many special occasions, or just when we've got some extra spending money to drop on dining. The staff is fantastic, I've never had a bad experience with my food or wait staff here, they're extremely friendly, courteous, and efficient. The food is fantastic, and they always have in house specials, the appetizers, drinks and entrees are all absolutely marvelous. I'd absolutely recommend giving them a visit if you've never been there.

One of the best places I have eaten in a long time. A great variety of meals. All was fabulous. A bit off the beaten path but worth the drive. Excellent food and service. I live 2hrs away and I am already planning next trip for dinner with friends.
Take a chance you will not regret

The Townhouse in Emeryville is always a good bet, but be sure to make reservations as it's a popular place! Love the menu and its variety and the special cocktails are great. I had a crab salad that was fresh and portioned just right. My friend loved her Thai steak salad. It's a little noisy but not to the point of being unable to carry on a conversation. Front desk reception (especially the very tall man with glasses) is always pleasant and helpful. Good service and good value -- definitely recommend!

Overall, our dining experience was subpar in relation to other dining experiences we've had at comparable restaurants in the area. The service was wonderful, and the crab/artichoke dip was to die for. Unfortunately, the mushroom ravioli was overcooked. Additionally, there was a table of loud and obnoxious gentlemen seated in the center of the restaurant which disrupted our entire experience. It was so loud inside the restaurant that my husband and I were unable to converse normally. I would go so far as to say that the noise level was piercing. We will not be returning.

Don't let the curb appeal view stop you from entering!
Three adults (aged 34 - 65) really enjoyed the good vibe and three terrific meals.
Establishment was very busy at 6:30 on a Monday night.
Appies included Avocado Bruschetta (very very good!) as well as Warm Dungeness Crab & Artichoke Dip.
Entrees included Almond Encrusted Seared Scallops, Chicken Piccata, and, Baby Back Ribs.
Dessert included Vanilla Creme Brule.
The appies, entrees & dessert were all very well received. Portion sizes were good as well. The Baby Back Rib dinner was quite large!
This was our first time there and a return date is assured.

After a 5-year absence, for no good reason, I took my dear friend here for Birthday Dinner.
We first ordered delicious “5-1-0 ‘ritas” (they also have their regular margaritas which come in a 16 oz glass, for the extra-thirsty,) followed by their perfectly fried calamari appetizer, lightly coated in a dusting of well-seasoned cornmeal. They had some very yummy sounding specials, a Seared Scallop, Grilled Salmon & a Prime Rib, but we ordered & shared their NY Pepper Steak & Pork Chop entrees. Both were cooked perfectly. I admittedly have a lower tolerance for salt & found my Pork Chop a little salty, but my more salt-loving friend simply found it divine. I may request it less salted next time, if an option, (I doubt all of that came from brining,) but there will be a next time!
We also shared 2 desserts, their Orange Flourless Chocolate Cake & Caramel Apple Crisp, served hot with a vanilla bean flecked Vanilla Ice Cream.
Our server was relaxed & there when we needed him.
I’m looking forward to our next special occasion!

Awesome food and service! The Prime Rib is melt in your mouth delicious and the scallops on risotto with bacon was heavenly. Great atmosphere and great, attentive service. It did get rather loud in there as the evening got busier. other than that, it was great!

Made reservations for my mother's birthday. Started with our sever I really wish his name! He was great and attentive made sure we were good. Food was excellent coconut bbq baby racks AMAZING. We also ordered some appetizers the pot stickers (who would of thought) i could have just that and been happy but it just kept getting better dungenous crab artichoke dip to die for. Crispy buffalo chicken salad was amazing. And to finish off they payed attention to my little note that it was my mother's birthday and they brought her out a crumbule with a candle on it. Overall my party was happy and we had a great time. And cant wait to come back!

Definitely an off night. I have eaten here many times as a place to get good food and service. But not this time. I ordered the crab cakes special, which came out without any sauce. They were dry, and the broccoli was lukewarm at best. After waiting for several minutes, our waiter came over and quickly noticed there was no sauce. I assumed that recognition meant he would immediately get some. After waiting for 10 minutes, with now a cold entre, he was not to be found so I called the restaurant from my table to ask for some service. Within minutes I finally got the needed sauce, but by then the meal was a disaster.

As for my partner, she asked for a very light dressing on her steak salad. Instead, it was drenched in the dressing. Another disappointment.

While we got comped for the entres, and an apology from the waiter, I need to wait a while and will try it again.
