About Townhouse Bar and Grill
From the Emeryville fireman's dream of a Speakeasy that he built in 1926, to Steve Vernetti, the original Townhouse Speakeasy bartender who along with his family ran it for 35 plus years after Prohibition ended, the TH has been and remains an East Bay institution.
Next came the 70's and 80's when country and western bars, music and dancing were at their peak and the theme at the TH. This period is fondly remembered by Cal graduates who continue to visit the Townhouse and reminisce about their dancing days but do not miss the peanut shells and sawdust on the floor.
1990 was the year that Ellen Hope Rosenberg, the current executive chef and owner, took over an ailing TH and resurrected it from top to bottom. From her inspired American-California style menu to the maintenance of the original construction both in and out. This is a restaurant that has a unique story whose food and ambiance is as authentic as the staff are courteous and genuine.

We do not cater on site but will fill to go orders that can be picked up by client.
We have a private lot next to the restaurant with space for 30 cars. Unfortunately the lot can be full and the restaurant is only a third full as many people arrive separately. Street parking is reasonably ample and not metered.
The free Emery-go-Round that operates from the MaCarthur BART Station will drop you off at 59th Street and Hollis.
This puts you at a distance of one and 1/2 blocks from the restaurant. You only need to walk one block up 59th, towards the Oakland Hills, to Doyle and make a right. The Townhouse will be on your left under the big Redwood tree.

Townhouse Bar and Grill Ratings and Reviews
We've dined a handful of times at this place over the past year. The first time, everything was great - food, service, ambiance. The last few times have been disappointing. The food has been just OK. The host, a tall man, has been cold, unwelcoming and unfriendly; he acts as if he's doing you a favor by letting you into his dining room. I have seen him turn on the charm for parties he appears to know, but we are not one of those. This last time the wait person was totally unhelpful on menu choices, and we had to wait forever for our food, way longer than other parties who arrived and ordered well after we did. When I asked our wait person to check on the food, he refused to do so and said that ours was taking longer because we had ordered appetizers. When I pointed out that other later arriving parties had already gotten their food, he just shined me on. With all the amazing restaurants in the Bay Area, there's no need to tolerate OK food and poor service.
I love this restaurant! The food is great and the wait staff is wonderful!! The only down side is that it is a little loud but the vibe is still nice! So in my view, the loudness can be overlooked. Go to the Townhouse, you’ll have an excellent dining experience!
The Townhouse was a favorite of mine when I worked in Emeryville 10 years ago and have been back only a few times. I am happy to report that it is still one of the best restaurants around. Some old friends from the Pacific NW were in Berkeley visiting and I wanted to take them out for a good dinner that was a little different from restaurants up North. It so happened that we had the summer like weather and I thought about going somewhere with a view. They had gone to a waterfront spot earlier and said drinks and snack was horrible. Our dinner was perfect at Townhouse. Food was delicious and our waiter was terriffic! He shared the history of Emeryville and Townhouse with them which they loved. They loved the architechture and interior of the restaurant as well. We shared 3 dishes-- brussel sprout salad, grilled prawns, mashed potatoes and green beans and crabcakes with broccoli. All were fabulous and the portions were perfect. One of the people eats a mostly vegetarian and only fish diet and she said that the menu provided many options. I'll be back again!! Thank you!
Overall a fun place to visit with a lot of colorful history. Excellent food, large menu with many choices; reservation a must as restaurant fills up by 7:00. Good service; outdoor eating area for warm days/nights; small parking lot.Rather loud inside so I wouldn’t recommend for an intimate romantic evening. Good for groups as well as lunch or brunch .
Great Find...Townhouse has been around for years and it still have outstanding service, great food at reasonable prices. Met a friend for dinner to catch up and chat over drinks/dinner and at no time did we feel pressure to hurry up or give up our table for others. Ended up sitting there for 4 hours, enjoying the drinks, dinner & dessert.
Awesome place. Will definitely return.
Spectacular!! Townhouse never disappoints. The food and cocktails are just fabulous, and our server tonight, Joe, was friendly and attentive yet not at all overbearing. Their thread is to die for and so are pretty much all the appetizers. My first time trying the avocado bruschetta which was a standout. No complaints. Love this place through and through — and I am a foodie and ambience expert.
I have been coming to this restaurant for about 10 years as I travel frequently to Emeryville for business purposes. I eat here every trip as it is one of my favorites! The food is consistently great and the service is always top notch. Shane (Manager) is always friendly, engaging and makes sure that we are taken care of.
Love this place. Good service. Great drinks. We ordered the scallops and they were amazing. I typically think that scallops are just ok because they can be kinda chewy. But the scallops here are super tender and tasty... cooked to perfection with a delicious buerre blanc sauce and mashed potatoes. Great restaurant overall.
Food and service were good -- but did not understand why a 20 minute delay to be seated after arriving on time for our 7:30pm reservation. Also, since they have valet parking at lunch, why not for dinner, allowing more cars to be parked in the lot. Two of us arrived early, and while waiting in the lot for our third person, twice helped drivers trying to maneuver when they discovered that parking was full after pulling all the way in the lot.
For the most part, the food was good but left out a lot of flavor and variety. The mashed potatoes, featured on many of their entrees and specials, were left to be desired. The ambiance in the building was was overall comforting and relaxing and not terribly loud. It was nice but nothing that would draw me back to this neighborhood institution.
Why have I just found this gem! Fantastic meal. Every dish was a delight. The teriyaki steak bites were incredibly tender and tasty. The avocado bruschetta was good (I would have like a bit more balsamic reduction). Almond crusted scallops were Perfection and the chicken picatta was wonderful. Too full for dessert. Will definitely be back!
