Town Hall - San Francisco

Bar tenders waitress great as well as accommodating host
I asked for no meant in my soup and they added meat and weren’t that apologetic
We enjoyed the Sunday pre fixe menu; good selections!
Food is quite good, but it's too loud inside to enjoy being there. The opentable "energetic" is a substitute for deafening
The waiter for our table was super pushy to order more food and became very rude since we didnt order more. Their portions are huge couldnt finish mine. Food was nice a bit over priced but that’s fine. The rude waiter ruined over all experience, i will never visit again.
We came at a slow time, most of the tables were empty, and they sat us next to a table with 2 kids that were noisy.
My salmon was $34, and it was just a small piece on an otherwise empty plate.
This was a better restaurant in years past.
What happened Town Hall? You use to be my favorite Financial District restaurant. Empty tables, over cooked food, and a low energy environment :(
Don’t get the meatloaf! It comes out undercooked. Good restaurant, but not great food. Great service and cool place but would only go here for a casual dinner to try something else.
I brought a candidate that I was interviewing and she was vegetarian. First they dropped of the cornbread with no plates, I had to request them. She ordered the salad with no mushrooms and it came as in the menu with no modifications.
Solid southern food, but still so noisy that won't work for business meals.
I attended with a large group (12 people) for a team dinner. We were seated promptly and were one of 4 other large groups on a Monday night. We were served promptly, and had exceptional service. We had shared starters and the recommendations and portions recommended by the server were exactly right. Food arrived promptly for both starters and mains, most people seemed happy with their food. Overall a good place for a big group
The cornbread was ridiculously good.
Sundays are super quiet given the neighborhood, turns Town Hall into a secret dining choice for mostly locals. Great Sunday special menu, unhurried and quiet for an early dinner.
The food was OK. It was tasty but nothing to write home about. The jambalaya was supposed to have vegetables mixed in the rice but I think I had one piece of pepper in the whole dish.
The service was extremely slow and after we placed our order we never saw the waiter again.
The noise level was extremely high and a felt I had to shout across the table to be heard by my friend. It was a relief to leave the restaurant because I could hear my friend much better outside on the street.
Too many tables crowded together, unresponsive staff, and mediocre food. The okra was stringy and the broccoli I tough but the esters never ask about your food so you’re stuck with it. Too many other great places to eat to waste a meal here
Ham tasting and biscuits were fantastic. Chicken and waffles were fun and portion was huge.
Had been a few years but I’ve always found Town Hall to be a gem and this time was no different. The service was great, food was delicious and absolutely hit the spot (had the beet salad, BBQ shrimp, and a bowl of jambalaya).
Delicious! Our food was a bit slow getting to the table, thankfully we had the time to be patient.
The food is always amazing. The set UCD
We celebrated my husband’s birthday there, and had an amazing evening of food , family and wine. Everything was excellent! We were warmly greeted and were bid a fond farewell at the end of the evening. It’s amazing to find a spot like this among the high rises. We have been dining at Town Hall for 20 years.
Great food great service. Love this place
I haven't been to Town Hall in over ten years, only having eaten their outside sandwich offering since then. Had the Fried Chicken sandwich which was excellent, unexpectedly good.
Will definitely be back. Also best biscuits I've ever had
Good food but super loud
Solid as always. Great service although it seems like the fried chicken recipe was slightly altered? It was good just not as good as I remember. But would still order again.
One hoot to get our food: a chicken sandwich and a burger. On a Wednesday. At noon. ONE HOUR.
It took the manager to get involved to get our food. Seriously? ONE hour??
Was the food ok? It was ok but not worth the wait.
The servers looked paralyzed and unable to do anything about it. So weird.
Thank you to the gracious manager. But in all honesty, seriously disappointed. What a waste of time.
Horrible experience. Took 40 minutes for a sandwich and salad. Server did not come to our table to check on us even though we told him we had time constraints when we were seated. We had to take food to go and the food was inedible after we opened the packing.
Overall great dining experience. Food for dinner was smaller but everyone loved their dish.
We had the Meat ‘n Threes, which sounded fun and had good variety on the menu. We had strip steak, which was good, and fried chicken, which was a little greasy. The sides were pretty bland with little flavor. Pimento cheese was a good appetizer.
We really like the Southern slant to the menu. The fried chicken was excellent, as was the halibut. Service was attentive and prompt. The restaurant was not too noisey, we could converse in a normal tone.
Super loud (we had to shout to be heard), vegetarian food was just burned black veggies in some greasy creamy sauces (asparagus, broccoli, etc.). The only vegetarian entree (the farro) they turned into risotto and it wasn't as good. Pass for vegetarians.
It was a special occasion but it didn't feel particularly special. It was 8pm on a Saturday night, but mostly empty. We didn't have one server -- various people came to our table which led to less than stellar attention. My gumbo was cold, but there was nobody around to tell. The servers were friendly, when you could find one.
Our bill was more than $200 for 4 people -- not unusual for SF. But there was NO alcohol...and I didn't have an entree (just a small bowl of gumbo.) We discovered that we were charged $19 for "still" water and $19 for sparkling. We were just thirsty and there was NO mention of cost. When we were asked about a refill, we said "sure." So there was a $38 charge on our bill. To his credit, the manager DID credit us by phone a few days later. I truly appreciate that.
I think the food was "fine." But the cold gumbo, inattentive service, ridiculous water charge (just TELL us you charge for sparkling and still water) and empty room (which detracts from the atmosphere) didn't add up to a $200+ dinner. There are too many choices for great meals -- for all budgets -- in San Francisco. I'd have to be hard pressed to choose Town Hall again.
What a disappointment. They know nothing of hospitality and do not care about their customers at all. Cold manager who has no compassion. Chewy shrimp, rediculously over priced meatballs that have been getting smaller and smaller... ribs taste like they were cooked yesterday and warmed up in the microwave. The jambalaya portion looks like it has been cut in half and is really bland. Taste like white rice with cheap sausage. Waffle from fried chicken taste like pure yeast. Gross. We have been coming here for over 10 years and it’s just been getting worse and worse in the past few.. all good things must pass.
Town hall just no longer feels like town hall.
Couldn’t be more sad and disappointed.
Absolutely not kid friendly. They act like they don’t like kids
It's a bit pricey, but I guess one should expect that in downtown San Francisco. Staff was friendly, service was good and food was good as well! I'll go back for sure.
many of us in our group have been to Town Hall and by far this was the worst experience we've all had. Our waiter was awful our food orders all go delivered at separate times and whomever was placing them got a couple mixed up. unfortunately, one of our diners was late but he asked the waiter if he could get a butter lettuce salad with chicken and it took almost 30 mins to get and our late diner had to leave before he could his lunch. recipes/menu items had changed and the updated iterations weren't not as good for some of our group. main reason why we go there is because we work close by but we may have to venture a little further out now.
Great restaurant for groups! Food is delicious. Get the fried ocra and the fried chicken - perfectly cooked. Wine list and cocktail menu is great.
