Outstanding food and service. Been around for a long time and never fails to deliver. Love TH!!
The food was good, but heavy. The service was horrible. First when we checked in for the reservation one of the host pushed me to get by. Then the waiter was not very helpful and had an attitude, finally we never got our food to take home. It’s definitely not as good as it used to be.
Not happy that they switched to pre fixe on Sundays, when we attend theatre matinees. So we will not be returning after the theatre, going forward.
I had an impromptu dinner with friends celebrating my recent engagement. We had a fantastic time. The drinks were very tasty and the food was fantastic. I had a pork chop that was very flavorful. Everyone loved the rice pudding with rhubarb for desert. When the bartender heard that we were celebrating an engagement, he sent over glasses of sparkling wine for everyone. Our server was also very attentive and friendly. Overall we had a great dinner!
We had a great dinner. We LOVED the whiskey BBQ shrimp and joked that next time we would just order salads, shrimp and the butterscotch/chocolate pudding and skip the entrees.
Nice atmosphere and good comfort food selections. The Sunday prix fixe menu is a good value because it includes starter, entree and desert. The only shortfall is that all selections are heavy so be prepared to have tums on hand afterward. The stainless steel tray-like serving plates is a definite no-no at these prices.
love ambience. .. intimate place great for our party of 6. excellent service. loved the pork chop!
Nice setting and menu for a business or casual lunch when you want something nicer but not over the top expensive.
I am not a picky eater, but it is VERY hard to find something for lunch that sounds good. That being said, I ordered the soup of the day and the tartar, and it was delicious, but they don't seem to have many somewhat healthy choices.
Best seat is at the bar with the great bartenders!
My girlfriend came into town and she truly loved your ribs. Great job.
Outstanding food! Could use more wait staff, especially when the restaurant is full on a Saturday night!
The food was amazing but the service was horrible. I would not even write a poor review but this is the 2nd time the service was BAD. When we arrived the place was pretty empt, approximately 3 other groups sitting at tables and the service was still bad.
They have added some more menu items since we last ate here a few months ago. Our Valentine's Day dinner was great!
The food and drinks were good, but unfortunately our service was awful. Not sure if they were understaffed, but it was Friday night and the restaurant was not full, and still we stood at the door for ~10 mins waiting for someone (other than the bartenders) to acknowledge us and check us in for our reservation. And then our table service was awkward - timing was off, drink orders weren't taken for every member of the party and then arrived slowly, etc. The food was good, but I will not go out of my way to dine here again.
We must have gone on a very off day. We had a party of 5 for lunch, and it took over hour to get our food. Our server was very oblivious to the fact that it was taking so long and never even once stopped to give us an update (like saying "hey! kitchen's running behind!") When my colleague's salad finally arrived, the chicken was raw!
I am kinda sad because I have been wanting to go here quite some time.
1) When the waitress came to our table to tell us that our food was on the way I knew there was a problem
2) My po-boy fish sandwich had a nearly burnt cornmeal crust, dark brown when it should have been a golden brow.
3) My friend's chicken sandwich had a nearly burnt cornmeal crust, the chicken made dry by being overcooked. The kitchen staff was not paying attention to the food.
4) The appetizer plate sat empty throughout the whole meal.
5) We were not asked if we wanted another glass of wine
6) The 1970s music did not make the meal & service any more tolerable. The Eagles in 2019? Umm, not for me.
I've been to Town Hall several times & have not had these problems before. The restaurant has great potential to be much better rather than really bad. I was embarrassed to have taken a friend there for his first visit.
Excellent food and service. Great wine list with wide ranging selection. Perfect place for dinner in the SOMA.
I enjoyed the chicken sandwich, and the atmosphere. The service was friendly, I dined at a busy lunch time.
We have been going to Town Hall for about 20 years now and it has always been one of my favorites in SF. This time was probably my worst experience overall, and I don't know if or when I'll be going back. Mostly nits, but this is a relatively expensive dinner so there shouldn't be any imo. We had lots of trouble getting basic drinks that were drinkable. How many times should I have to send back a gin and tonic to get tonic that wasn't flat? No bread is served any more, and obvious cost cutting move that we didn't like. No way to get a basic green salad even though the restaurant likely has all the ingredients to make one. Entrees were good as was service. The restaurant was not busy on a Friday evening which may not bode well. The area has changed dramatically with massive office towers surrounding the small old building. So our dinner was just ok this time but our past experiences have been terrific.
solid food, great service, not a stand-oput but a very viable option for business or pleasure dinner. will return again
I enjoy the jalapeno cornbread - a definite must have item. I wouldn't recommend having important meetings at this restaurant. It's noisy once the restaurant fills up. It's definitely better for groups.
The service was great for the first 10 minutes and when the bill came. We were disappointed that the waiter seemed to attend to the larger parties and would only check on my party of two once we finally got his attention. Overall, the service made the overall experience disappointing.
service was not good, no communication, and meal took over 1 hour and 10 minutes to arrive for basic orders for a 4 top
Our meal was superb. Both of us had the fried pork dish with the salad on top.
Busy evening but server was attentive.
Tried to rush us out of restaurant
The menu should reflect that the trut is a we fish cooked in the skin with head and tail. It’s a shock otherwise and flor was not great. The shrimp appetizer was amazing and the only thing I will return for.
Definitely order the biscuits with prosciutto! Best thing on the menu.
wrong bill delivered to us
Server did not check on our table till the end of meal and only to deliver wrong bill
Server forgot to provide us our take-home food
I have eaten lunch here many times over the past year and the food and service are always consistently good. The only negative is the high level of noise which makes it difficult to hold a business conversation. This trend of noisy rooms needs to die.
Poor execution but the food was fine. We were ignored for ten minutes. Food was slow to come out. Entrees did not arrive at the same time. Weekday work lunch was stretched well past an hour. Need to work on the front of house. Please pack your knives and go.
The restaurant and food was excellent. They appeared to be short staffed. Note the restaurant did not have our reservation and stated they are having issues with open table. They were able to accommodate us.
We had a reservation for 3 at 12 noon. Arrived on time, were seated right away, 10 min wait to get a server to take drink orders. Another 10 min to take food order. We ordered 3 burgers, all the same. The food did not arrived until 1:05pm and only after we asked our waiter if the food was almost ready. So for 1 hour and 5 min we just had our drinks.
Town Hall is a SOMA-local place easily traipsed to from Market Street.
I really enjoy the interior layout, the high ceilings (which may help keep the noise down in the 'hard' interior), and the bit of space between tables.
I find the menu a little limited, but it's broad enough for anyone in a gorp to find something to chow down on. The cornbread is a great starter, served in a small, oven-hot cast iron skillet; it has a slightly crispy top with just enough spice from the peppers. The 'country fried pork chop' is more like a 'chicken fried steak' filet of pork; looked good. The fried chicken sandwich is hot, crispy and spicy; very good. The pulled pork sandwich is also yummy. One lunch companion had the shrimp n grits, which looked very good.
On this day (my 4th/5th time there) the service was a bit neglectful; we arrived 11:45 and the place was mostly empty, still it took a while to get water, to place our order, and faaaaar too long to get our check. I'm not at all impressed with restaurant 'service' in SF, it's almost an oxymoron. Town Hall is no different, fitting right in with slightly less-than-average service.
One appetizer, four meals ( 2 sandwiches, 2 'mains'), and a latte - $96, +SF Employee mandate $4.80 + tax $8.58 = $109.38
They have a stand, outside, from which you can grab-n-go with the 'sandwich of the day'. This is an incredibly convenient way to grab lunch. If no one is in front of you, it's maybe two minutes and $10+ and you're on your way.
I booked the table for a work lunch meeting and the food had not arrived an hour after we sat down. Not somewhere I would recommend booking for a quick lunch meeting
Extremely noisy. We live locally and it seemed everyone was talking very loudly and all work. Definitely will not come back for dinner with my wife. We have enjoyed the bar and thought the restaurant would me a relaxing experience. The opposite. We were very unnerved by the volume that everyone was talking. Like I said it may be fine for business but not for a relaxing dinner that we were hoping for.
Great food and service. Would definitely recommend.
Great staff who were attentive and friendly while not rushing our dining experience.
Had another excellent lunch with clients today, and got to sample the Jambalaya along with the Fried Okra and Fried Chicken Sandwich, which was outstanding as always!
Don't forget the Buttermilk Biscuits to start with!
There were four of us on a fairly slow night, and the service was even slower. The food once served was very good but the waiter was not engaged and obviously didn't care. I've been to the restaurant numerous times over the years, but with all the choices we have for good dinning at that price point, it will be a while before we go back.
