Town Hall - San Francisco

The restaurant and food was excellent. They appeared to be short staffed. Note the restaurant did not have our reservation and stated they are having issues with open table. They were able to accommodate us.
We had a reservation for 3 at 12 noon. Arrived on time, were seated right away, 10 min wait to get a server to take drink orders. Another 10 min to take food order. We ordered 3 burgers, all the same. The food did not arrived until 1:05pm and only after we asked our waiter if the food was almost ready. So for 1 hour and 5 min we just had our drinks.
Town Hall is a SOMA-local place easily traipsed to from Market Street.
I really enjoy the interior layout, the high ceilings (which may help keep the noise down in the 'hard' interior), and the bit of space between tables.
I find the menu a little limited, but it's broad enough for anyone in a gorp to find something to chow down on. The cornbread is a great starter, served in a small, oven-hot cast iron skillet; it has a slightly crispy top with just enough spice from the peppers. The 'country fried pork chop' is more like a 'chicken fried steak' filet of pork; looked good. The fried chicken sandwich is hot, crispy and spicy; very good. The pulled pork sandwich is also yummy. One lunch companion had the shrimp n grits, which looked very good.
On this day (my 4th/5th time there) the service was a bit neglectful; we arrived 11:45 and the place was mostly empty, still it took a while to get water, to place our order, and faaaaar too long to get our check. I'm not at all impressed with restaurant 'service' in SF, it's almost an oxymoron. Town Hall is no different, fitting right in with slightly less-than-average service.
One appetizer, four meals ( 2 sandwiches, 2 'mains'), and a latte - $96, +SF Employee mandate $4.80 + tax $8.58 = $109.38
They have a stand, outside, from which you can grab-n-go with the 'sandwich of the day'. This is an incredibly convenient way to grab lunch. If no one is in front of you, it's maybe two minutes and $10+ and you're on your way.
I booked the table for a work lunch meeting and the food had not arrived an hour after we sat down. Not somewhere I would recommend booking for a quick lunch meeting
Extremely noisy. We live locally and it seemed everyone was talking very loudly and all work. Definitely will not come back for dinner with my wife. We have enjoyed the bar and thought the restaurant would me a relaxing experience. The opposite. We were very unnerved by the volume that everyone was talking. Like I said it may be fine for business but not for a relaxing dinner that we were hoping for.
Great food and service. Would definitely recommend.
Great staff who were attentive and friendly while not rushing our dining experience.
Had another excellent lunch with clients today, and got to sample the Jambalaya along with the Fried Okra and Fried Chicken Sandwich, which was outstanding as always!
Don't forget the Buttermilk Biscuits to start with!
There were four of us on a fairly slow night, and the service was even slower. The food once served was very good but the waiter was not engaged and obviously didn't care. I've been to the restaurant numerous times over the years, but with all the choices we have for good dinning at that price point, it will be a while before we go back.
We had a great dinner celebrating the new year!
We chose Town Hall for our New Year's Eve dinner because they don't rip you off with an expensive prix fixe menu -- it's the full, regular menu with regular prices. We started with butternut squash and apple soup and BBQ Gulf shrimp, both of which were incredible. My husband also had the fried chicken and waffles and said it was perhaps the best fried chicken he'd ever had. My ribs were outstanding as well, and came with a deliciously tangy, slightly spicy sauce. Portions are quite generous; I couldn't possibly finish all of the food (but thankfully my husband came to the rescue!). The by-the-glass wine list covered a nice range and wasn't too pricey, and their bottle list is highly impressive. Despite the craziness of the holiday, the place was staffed up and service was attentive. Very nice job; we will be back!
Sides (Brussel sprouts, mac n cheese and biscuits) were better than the entrees. Did not like the sole and sides at all. Fried chicken was average. Ribs were a bit spicy and dry. Too noisy to carry on a conversation without raising your voice. Disappointed with our meals so did not bother to have dessert.
Had a wonderful date night with my husband at Town Hall. Ordered the huge, delicious cowboy ribeye. Was cooked a true rare. Our server was very sweet and attentive. Looking forward to next time.
Great food, service, and value.
After a seriously long wait for a server, we ordered 2 sandwiches for lunch (Pulled Pork and Fried Chicken). The fried chicken sandwich was blazing hot tasting like a 1/4 bottle of Tabasco was in the dressing. Note, we never mind hot or spicy but this was overkill and unpleasant. The pulled pork was simply lackluster. Not likely to go back.
Too noisy, portion smaller food not as good as it used to be.
Service was really slow and disjointed. Had to continue to ask for everything. Food was decent.
Service was bad food was acceptable but not what I expected for a SF restaurant
The food was awesome. So yummy! My 10 year old daughter ate fried okra. Great comfort food. The wait staff was very attentive.
First time to Town Hall. Nice ambiance. I think they bill their menu as southern but the atmosphere is more old New York chophouse. Anyway, we sat near the far end away from the entry. It was perfect - not too noisy. We both had the cod po’boy. My companion requested within pickle. I pulled some pickles off mine - I like to taste the fish and sauce - as too many pickles took over the flavor. The fries were crisp and well seasoned. We ordered a side of Brussels sprouts - they were very tasty with a little char on the edges (not burnt charred; crunchy charred.). We placed our orders pretty quickly but they bet slow coming out of the kitchen. It’s the holiday season and there were lots of large tables of office co- workers out for lunch so that was possibly the slow down. We were not in rush so no complaints. All in all a tasty enjoyable lunch. I’d definitely go back.
Came here for lunch. Food was fantastic. Loved the holiday Mulled Wine. Service was a little slow. Great atmosphere. I'd dine here again.
birthday dinner for my wife, joined by our daughter and boyfriend.
Been to TH before, it was my wife's choice for her birthday dinner.
The menu has a good selection and is easy to choose from. Food is well prepared and well presented.
Server was very attentive.
Kind of a noisy place, but there are some quieter corners and recessed spaces that could help with that.
Lunch was good but service was slow.
Really bummed out my experience at Town Hall today. It’s usually my go to spot for client meetings. Food is always good and never to loud. Today I got there at 12pm. We were sat at an awesome table in the corner. We ordered our food and had and app while we ate. After an hour of sitting there we still hadn’t received our food. The waiters apologized and said it should be out shortly. 30 min later we both had to leave for other meetings. We had to rush the kitchen to whip up something to-go so we could at least get something in our belly’s as we got back to our offices. Not a great experience when you are taking out clients. Not worth the $100 for the beers we drank at the table and the cold streak I ate at my desk.
Line to get into the restaurant at noon, but once inside there seem to be plenty of seats. Had a reservation. Service improved as the food came out quickly so maybe they staffed up in the kitchen for the holiday rush. A couple of month ago, had a long wait for food. Great food!!
Great food if you’re ok shouting the entire meal. Way too noisy to hear anything. Should be an easy fix.
Really warm and fun atmosphere. The food is unique but almost too much so. It's a twist on southern food with ingredients that you've never heard of. I got the sole dish and it was $35.00 for a very small portion.
I have always liked the restaurant - for 10+ years! The food is consistently good and the butterscotch/chocolate pot de creme is always a winner! This time we had great service with Cara - thank you, Cara, for taking excellent care of us.
Service was very rushed and inattentive (I eventually gave up on trying to get the server's attention). It appears our server was managing several large tables. In addition food was very average. Noise level was quite high, and it was difficult to carry on a business conversation at a table of 4. Tables are located very close together, and I was repeatedly bumped by servers and wait staff as they sped by our table. All in all, it was not an enjoyable dining experience. Have been to Town Hall several times and would not go back again.
Town Hall is hands down one of my favorite SF restaurants but this last visit was less than notable. Saturday is less busy (due to Financial District location) and they had enough staff but service was incredibly slow. I saw our drink order sitting at the bar for 15 mins before our server got them to us. Food was only “eh” this night. The biscuits and ham was phenomenal but the normal incredible Chicken & Waffles was not at their best and the ribs were not good at all. We will always come back again and let’s just hope it was an off night.
As always, reliably delicious. Wait staff was great.
As always, fantastic knowledgeable servers, and spectacular creative food. The menu is always changing and evolving.
Disappointing. Started out great. We arrived early for a happy hour drink, and when we told the server we had a dinner reservation, she was very helpful moving us to the dining room early. Enjoyed the drinks, and when the dinner service started, we wanted to add an app from the HH menu, but were told they couldn’t do that. Ok. So plenty of other good options. Wanted to get the ham tasting, but were told that the “machine” that cut the ham wasn’t working. Knife? Anyway, other options. Half way through the butternut squash farro, we each found bits of gravel in the dish. Fortunately, no broken teeth! They took it and came back with something about this happening sometimes in the grinding process (!). Offered to comp a dessert. No thanks. Drinks ran out and wine never came (except on the bill). Two excuses from the chef and an obviously understaffed dining room. Probably won’t be back.
They sat our group of 6 in the back by the kitchen door and that was loud and a distraction. There were a good amount of open tables and the rest of the restaurant seemed to have a cool ambiance. We just didn’t get to experience it.
The Service was really slow, took 15-20 minutes to get a drink after ordering it (4 out of 6 ordered beers) every time. Food took over an hour, but to the waitress’s credit she brought us a free pimento cheese plate and a free round of drinks, acknowledging the slow pace. No complaints about the food, my halibut was good. The service really just killed it, felt like they could care less about us being there!
Celebrated our anniversary and couldn’t have asked for a better waitress and menu. I have a gluten issue and she worked with us to find the right items and they were all delicious.
Comfort food, high energy. Not a place for intimate or serious conversation
The food and service at Town Hall was excellent. I’ll definitely recommend it to friends and plan on returning soon.
The ribs and peach crisp were outstanding.
Went to Town Hall today for a business lunch, and had the Fried Chicken Sandwich, which was delicious as always, crisp outer crust and moist and tender chicken inside! My colleagues were very impressed, and can't wait to go back for a dinner meal soon! Thanks!
Was good, but obviously slipping as The Owners disappearing as they open more bizs, not focusing. They hire staff to run the place for them as they are mainly gone nowadays. The restaurant was less than 1/2 full at 7:30 dinner time, the old vibrant energy kinda gone, servers & hosts “doing their job”, but with no pizazz or energy like it used to be when it 1st opened & with Mitch & Steve & Doug there & present...the clock is ticking or it is the fuse?
Came here for a business lunch. Service was inadequate-- my coffee took about 20m to show up and there were no refills on water until I waved someone down. The pork rib sandwich was incredibly greasy, as were most of the sandwich choices. Noise level was very loud and necessitated my client and I to almost-shout through lunch. While it's a very convenient spot for me, I won't be choosing this in the future.
