Town Hall - San Francisco Ratings and Reviews
Town Hall never disappoints. We went there for a birthday dinner, shared a range of different appetites and plates plus a range of many different cocktails. Between us we probably tried every item on the menus! The food is "California Cajun" with quality ingredients and lots of nice southern touches. The BBQ Shrimp, Cornbread, and Ham and Biscuits are to die for. Versatile restaurant that is good for a business dinner or just for fun.
We decided to have our New Year’s Eve dinner here so that we could walk to the fireworks nearby after. We made a reservation at 10.00pm on Open Table, and showed up at the restaurant at around 9.45pm. We did not get seated till 10.45pm. Although it was a very busy night at the restaurant, and they had overbooked, it was very annoying to have people who showed up later with the same 10.00pm reservation get seated first. The excuse that was given was that they followed the order of the 10.00pm reservations in their system, but frankly, with a little courtesy and not too much imagination, the restaurant staff could have seated us before the other 10.00pm guests who showed up much later. The difference was almost 20 minutes if we had been seated in the order we came.
Another small gripe I had was that my partner wanted to try the oysters but didn’t know if he would like it. The menu listed oysters for $3.75 each, and did not specify any minimum order. When I told the waiter we wanted 2 oysters, he couldn’t help himself and smirked. Quite unprofessional I thought.
The other dishes we ordered were not bad. We had the Swiss chard for starters, and then the Beef Duo and BBQ ribs. The steak in the Beef Duo was cooked rare, but was much too cold. The ribs were not bad, just a tad dry.
Overall, it was an okay dinner, marred by the wait in the beginning and the waiter’s attitude. We ended up missing the first minute of the fireworks because our dinner ended up later than expected, and basically had to rush through the entrees so that we could make it to the waterfront in time.
Not a typical experience I hope. We came on New Year's Eve and had to wait 30 minutes for our table despite having a reservation. They blamed it on Open Table only allowing 75 minutes for each seating. The wait staff seemed quite rushed and harried. Food took a long time to come and the second beer took even longer. We were in and out within 75 minutes as we wanted to see the fireworks. I would not come here again on NYE, it was too stressful and the food was not worth it. We had the beef duo and the St Louis ribs. They brought bread and butter to fill the time before out main course was ready, which was a nice touch. Our waiter did his best, I'm sure it was hard work. We will come back when it's less busy but be aware they do add the healthy SF surcharge to the check. It gets deducted from their tip...
We showed up exactly at our reservation time and waited for 40 minutes before we were seated. The waitress wasn’t familiar with a single bottle of wine on the menu and pushed us to just make a choice when I asked if there was a somolier or another waiter that could answer our questions. It was a good 20 minutes before she came around and took our order. We ordered mains and she informed us that it would take a while and we needed to order starters. The food was great but the service was offensively awful.
Tasty fare, but your mileage will vary depending on what you order. I had the beef duo which was well seasoned, tender and absolutely a party in my mouth. My partner had the buttermilk chicken which was decent, but underwhelming. The pot de creme was rich and had a nice texture. Staff was attentive despite how busy it was. Overall, a positive experience.
To be fair, this was probably not a typical night at Town Hall. Christmas Eve so very busy. As a result, service was very slow and restaurant very noisy. Food was not piping hot when served and I do think a bit overpriced. I should not base my experience on one night but I would not go back there again.
The last time I ate at Town Hall was several years ago. It was very good then but this past week it was even better than I remembered it. Our party split between the classic and the seasonal dishes; everything was great. Dinner was a bit chaotic and loud but fun.
Town hall never disappoints! Our group has Been celebrating holidays dinners out for 9 years now. I chose TownHall as it’s one of my favorites for delicious food for the soul and cocktails to lighten any harsh week. The staff is great, service is spot on, the holiday decor will help fill your with the holiday spirit.
I can’t remember how long I’ve been coming here (more than 5). Will definitely be going back and also giving high recommendations. Thanks for getting us started with a great holiday kickoff!
Ps pimento cheese and fried okra!!!
Had another excellent lunch, this time the pulled pork sandwich, and also the butternut squash soup. Always a consistently-good winner, we had the buttermilk biscuits as an appetizer, too.
Can't wait to come back for dinner some evening.
Keep up the great work!
Had the excellent Fried Chicken sandwich for lunch, which was moist and tender on the inside, crispy to perfection on the outside. I recommend it without the bread, just straight up with a side of lettuce and/or slaw that comes with it.
It's also served by itself on the Dinner menu, and that is the star of the show.
Consistently tasty and delicious from start to finish, this place continues to amaze over the years!
The food was good - everyone enjoyed their meals (pork chop, 2 seafood dishes, and I ordered a bavette but was served a hangar - which I actually prefer anyway). My steak was a bit under seasoned and I was brought jus that wasn't gluten free after discussing that with the server, so that was strange.
Our biggest problem here was the service. After dropping salads, our waitress was pretty MIA and we had a question about one of them. Then, entrees took FOREVER to hit the table. So long a few of us had taken trips to the bathroom basically to kill time and not be so stressed about it. It was a Friday night but it wasn't packed yet - our dinner was at 6:45pm and the kitchen seemed already SUPER behind. It's not the end of the world, but our waitress never mentioned it, made any sort of apology for the delay, nor offered anything up as a consolation.
Overall, I can't say I'll never be back, but it won't be soon given how many amazing places there are in SF. The food here is solid, but it's crazy to wait that long for an entree without a mention- I'm talking probably over 30 minutes - but we didn't count. Luckily, it was a family-in-town type of dinner so we were doing out best to chat and enjoy one another's company until we were sort of hangry.
We came to town with a recommendation to try it and we weren’t disappointed. Three of us shared the 39 ounce rib eye with three sides and could barely eat half of it. The steak was done perfectly and the sides were all excellent. We had a great waiter who gave us a wonderful wine recommendation and it was very good. I would definitely suggest it for a special occasion and we will go back when we’re in town.
