Toscano Harvard Square Ratings and Reviews
Thank you! It was our daughter's 32 birthday, and you helped make it very special. Our servers were terrific. The food was very good, and the atmosphere was great. We'll be back for sure.
(I dislike the practice of adding "gratuities" to bills for parties of 5+. I understand the reason, but call it something else— a fee or a service tax. It is *not* a gratuity if the customer is forced to pay it. I always pay 20%-25% for service wherever I go. It is offensive that I cannot seem to be choosing to tip generously. I suppose a solution would be to ask for separate checks??)
Fine Italian food. They adapted very well, making substitutions, for some members of our party with very specific and limited dietary restrictions. The dishes seemed traditional, but tasty--and the menu is huge. We enjoyed our wine, which was one of the less pricy ones. This restaurant is half a block from the American Repertory Theater, and offers a discount to people attending the theater. We plan to make more combined ART/Toscano trips part of our future.
Eaten here before. Food always good. Not too happy with service today. Waiter did not seem to be knowledgeable about food restrictions or specials and had to keep going to kitchen to ask so it took some time before we were able to even order. Should not be difficult to state put sauce or gravy on side. No added salt to anything or if cooking from scratch, no salt, etc. Once our food did come, it was very good. Slow start but good ending.
Whenever we come to a production at ART, Toscano is our choice for dining and it never disappoints. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner on Wednesday evening after a matinee performance. Alex, our waiter from Columbia, was exceptional, as was the food and all the service. We can't wait to return. Thank you!
PS Love that wine comes in quaritnos! Cheers!
Great after concert dinner in New Years Eve Night! Super Harvard Square location on Brattle St. Our waiter,Peter, was excellent. able to pronounce & describe all the dishes on the extensive menu & even recommend a terrific white, dry Italian wine. Will go there again. Thank you ,Peter, for an enjoyable dining experience!
Our server was rushed and it wasn't even busy. He wasn't available for long periods of time and when he came to the table he spoke fast and acted rushed. It was 4:00. The server at the next table was wonderful, but not ours. Salad was underwhelming. Bolognese was nothing like I know as Bolognese. Music should have been subdued but was too loud, too upbeat for a restaurant like this and was like Muzak at times. The dessert was the best part of the meal. Very disappointed after having had 2 excellent experiences there last summer. Probably not going back again.
We have been to Toscano’s many times. Our evening was as enjoyable as every other time we have dined. We enjoy the variety of foods, the bar and option of more formal or less formal dining. Tonight our server was Markella and she was knowledgeable, kind, timely and engaging. Our host, David was very professional, attentive and also engaging. The service was exceptional. We ordered specials and loved everything. We would have ordered the blueberry white choc tart for dessert - but we were too full. We are glad that remains a regular on the menu. Our only wish is that the bread was served warm and that you offered two kinds in the basket. We will be back soon. Thank you for making my birthday memorable 😉
This is s good restaurant located right down the street from the ART. The wine list was good. Bread came right away We began with a Cesar salad and the beet salad. Both were large and tasty and could easily be shared . I had the pasta with all different kinds of seafood and my friend had the pasta pomodoro. Portions were a very good size and well prepared. Service was very good and prompt. We had a 5 pm seating for a 730 show which gave us time to linger and a little time to wander Harvard square. I guess I’m still surprised at prices in this area, but all in all it was a good experience for a special might with a friend.
Generally, I liked this restaurant. The ambiance was nice and fit our special birthday lunch. The food was good, not great. The service was fine... except for one problem which is why I rated the restaurant lower. I asked our waiter if a dish was red sauce, and he said no. He explained elaborately that there were chunks of tomatoes but not a red sauce. The dish came and it WAS red sauce. When I noted this to the waiter who checked in with us about 20 minutes after the dish was served, he said it wasn't red sauce. I nicely said, but yes, this is red sauce. He left to check with the chef, and of course, indeed it was red sauce. He did offer to get me another dish, but by that time, I had eaten 1/2 of it already, and said it was ok. I think he should have comped me something for the mistake. It clearly was a mistake and not what I wanted. I received nothing for the mistake, left 1/2 the dish uneaten, and not another word about it was spoken. A good restaurant would not have treated me this way. Too bad, b/c otherwise, it was a very pleasant lunch with good wine and salad.
We dined at Toscano prior to attending a show at the A.R.T. It is very convenient and the food is excellent. The rigatoni norcina is so good that I order it almost every time I dine at Toscano. My three family members all had different dishes and enjoyed them all. You really can't go wrong here.
This was my first experience of Toscano, tho I had heard good things about the place. Lovely dark wood interior balanced with crisp white tablecloths and settings. Attentive service without being bothersome. Kitchen responded to all dietary limits (gluten free for both of us, more things for my friend). And as important, they let us linger and talk, though we were at the table for over 2hrs. Lovely leisurely Italian meal. Just what we wanted.
This was my wife’s 60th birthday, I said as much in my reservations. I called and talk to the manager and assured me they would send out a dessert with a candle. Even though the meal was delicious , I was more than disappointed that they didn’t remember the candle. I had to chase the waiter down to tell him. To his credit he came back with a little tirimusu with a candle. The general experience was excellent even with the guffaw!
Always like the food and the generous wine pour. But the service is not customer friendly. They whisk your wine glass off the table without asking and then get offended when you ask them not to. One feels that the customers aren't really there - it's just tables and food. One of our waitresses when I made an error just explained that I had made an error and that's the way things were. You're a lovely restaurant with good food. You could train your staff to delight your customers. At the moment they barely serve them.
Lovely interior and a warm reception awaited us on a cold winter afternoon. The waitress appeared to have several tables but was attentive to our needs. Our cocktail order took a bit longer than we expected but our waitress assured us they would be right along. There was quite a variety of very different cocktails to be had as well as a good size wine list. Our friends decided to share the beet salad as an appetizer and it was put on two plates and there was plenty for both of them. I loved the fish stew which was chuck full of fresh and delicious fish. I would put it up against anyone's! We all had something different and were all satisfied. I very much enjoyed the white chocolate tort with fresh blueberries for dessert. Prices seem a bit high but being in the Harvard Sq. area accounts for that. We would all definitely go back again!
We come here often. I've never ordered the pizza and this time I did. It was excellent. My husband's sole and arugula salad were delicious, too. Service was first-rate. We always get our favorite, next-to-the-windows table—thank you :-)
We will be back in January for our daughter's 32nd birthday.
We made reservations at 730 and arrived at 715. Host stated our table was not ready and that we were to early to be seated. I was very confused as there were 6 tables available in plain view sight. Minutes after, a party of 3 walked in and were seated right away. Maybe they made reservations at 715. Any who, we decided to sit at the bar for drink while we wait for our table to be “ready”. Eventually we decided to dine at the bar. We order oysters and a prosciutto dish for appetizers. The apps were really good. For my meal I asked for a well seasoned steak and the bartender suggested the T- bone steak. I love suggestion so I decided to have that as my meal and my partner ordered a shrimp dish. The meals looked great when they arrived but unfortunately the flavor of my steak was plain and dry which was disappointing. After finishing our meals the bartender dropped off our check, because he thought we were “all set”. Well we were not, we ordered the tiramisu for dessert which was different but really good. The bartender eventually apologized for dropping the check off so soon and took the dessert off our bill. He didn’t have to do that but it was definitely appreciated. Overall I think the food was okay but the service could be better.
We had a new waiter, and I don’t want to be unkind... but a couple of things were off in a meaningful way. For starters (truly, our first interaction with him) he inquired about the content of a private conversation. We were laughing when he approached us, and he said he wanted to know what the joke was about. I’m sure that he meant well... he was trying to establish a relationship with us... but, truly... no. It was none of his business. Then he mixed up the main-course order for my guest and brought her scallops instead of shrimp. Thankfully she didn’t seem to mind, and the food was delicious. In short, I’m not sure if this waiter needs more training or is simply unsuited to the job: I leave that for the managers at Toscano to discern.
I love Toscano!! My partner and I have been going here for years--rarely, since we're young and can't often afford it--but every dinner has been so special. I've never had better bruschetta or tiramisu. The food is always insanely fresh and of the highest quality. It's a cozy, intimate, beautifully furnished restaurant. 11/10!
The first time we went to Toscano last spring was a disaster with a rude and insulting hostess but we gave it another try and were thoroughly pleased. We had the same table by the window which we enjoyed. Our waitperson was knowledgeable and made good suggestions based on the menu questions asked. Prosecco wine was perfect. Beef tenderloin filets cooked as ordered. The filet of sole was amazing. Vegetable substitutions allowed and appreciated. Desserts were truly Italian. Glad we gave it a second chance.
Our waiter was excellent! He kept taking care of us and making sure everything was perfect. In addition, the food was delicious! We had an incredible rib eye steak that was excellently cooked and high quality meat. Overall we really enjoyed and will definitely return when we come back to Boston!
