Toscana Ratings and Reviews
A terrific meal, with wonderful food and excellent service. Service was professional, courteous, prompt and unobtrusive. The food was simple and superb - well prepared and great ingredients. The atmosphere was warm and friendly and welcoming. A perfect evening.
Service busy but not attentive. Almost impossible to get water refilled (yes, we had a bottle of wine as well, but it is Southern California where you can't be without your water). Bit of a rush getting plates off the table as soon as last bite gone. Wine steward did not listen when we said didn't need a wine cooler because the wine was right temperature - he was looking around the room as if we didn't exist. The tomato, onion and cucumber salad was remarkably tasteless, in large part because the tomatoes were industrial strength- not farmers market- and not even appropriately cored. Other dishes OK, but didn't stand out. Not a bad meal, but not one to make one rush back, for sure.
My meal at Toscana was disappointing. The rack of lamb was slightly overcooked and the chicken with artichokes was most unsatisfactory. I have visited Toscana on many occasions and tend to find this restaurant to be rather good. Unfortunately, like many establishments, they are not terribly consistent in the quality and preparation. With much competition in Los Angeles, their future depends upon their ability to prepare consistently high quality Italian cuisine.
The meal was super pricey! For the 2 of us, we paid $200 (including 18% gratuity). I was pleased with the variety of vegetarian options. My husband liked his veal and the other "exquisite" meats. The service was impeccable! Our server was Italian himself so that was a nice touch ;) the bus boys and water boys were prompt to take our finished items. Everything was delivered and taken away in a timely manner. Customer service was the most memorable thing to take away from the evening. Followed by how expensive it was 😬 And thirdly, how delicious the food was. My broccoli purée soup was extremely thin based which I did not care for, but my spaghetti pomodoro was amazing. And I loved that our server split our burrata salad on two plates when I told him we'd be sharing it. We would definitely return if it weren't so far away from us.
Whenever I am in LA and have the time, we go to Toscana. While the noise level can get a bit loud at times, the place has good energy and the Italian food and wine list are exceptional. My personal favorites are the Burata appetizer, the Tagliatelle Bolognese, and the Veal Milanese (which is the best in the country). Molto bene!
My boyfriend and I are usually always happy with the food and service at Toscana. In fact since we moved to AZ we make sure to come here anytime we are in town. However this last time, I was very upset and disappointed with our experience. Don't get me wrong, the food was wonderful like always but our server this time was very misleading and lied to us. After we put in our order, our server brought out a pizza for our table of 7 and smiled/winked at us saying that "it was a mistake" assuring us that this pizza would be on the house since no one at our table had ordered any pizza/appetizers. Of course we were pleasantly surprised and made our night seem even more special. When our dinner came out he did the same thing, bringing out an additional entree of rigatoni. Everyone at the table was amazed at how friendly and kind this restaurant was. For most of our friends, it was their first time at Toscana so I was thrilled at the service we were getting. Lastly for dessert, our server once again surprised the table with some tiramisu on the house! When the check came, much to our chagrin they had actually charged us for the pizza and rigatoni! Wth! The tiramisu was still comped but the fact that they had the odasity to charge us for any food THEY brought out without our consent, assuring us it was "on the house", was deceitful and highly unprofessional. My friends were upset and annoyed but they chose to not make a scene, so we paid the inflated bill and left vowing to not come back. What a terrible way to end an initially lovely dinner with friends. Definitely never coming here again or recommending to friends after that embarrassing experience.
