Roka Akor - San Francisco
Tosca Café, located in the heart of San Francisco, takes guests on a trip to the Italian countryside. Whether visiting for a romantic date, a family evening out or a large private event, Tosca Café has the facilities to accommodate and please. The restaurant can host cocktail parties for up to 35 guests, so it is ideal for small wedding receptions, business meetings and other intimate gatherings. The rustic Italian décor theme is warm and inviting.
Tosca Café features a full bar where guests can order beer, cocktails, wine and other spirits. The House Cappuccino is a huge hit with regular patrons and the movie screen is great for watching major sporting games and other televised events. Peruse the full menu for popular items like crispy pig tails, Spanish octopus and trompetti with sausage and charred broccoli.
We enjoyed a welcoming, charming host. Great service from our server. Delicious cocktails. And the food was outstanding. We had the chicken, some steak, the charcuterie board and a salad. All absolutely wonderful. We can't wait to go back. Unique and comfortable ambiance.
Waitress w big attitude
If you don't eat pork, then your choices are pretty limited. Plenty of choices using pancetta, bacon or pork in the appetizers, pasta's and main courses. The roasted chicken seemed an option, but it is only for two and states that it takes an hour (i think). Wine list pretty expensive. Did not see much below $50 and most bottles $60 and up. Overall the service is attentive, food quality is very good, portions are reasonable. This is at least my 4th dinner here in the last 12 months.
Loved everything about this restaurant, and the service was fabulous. Wine list is great too.
We had a great Valentines experience at Tosca Cafe. We enjoyed a special kale salad with unique beet dressing, focaccia bread, seafood saute and veal pasta. Not only that -- we had their famous cappuccino served since 1919. We topped the dinner of with sorbeti and gelati desserts. They are all delicious. Gianni gave us a house tour. We rate this restaurant 5 stars on food and service.
Service was all over us too quickly and filling our water over and over...or missing completely and we waited 15 minutes to order our first round of drinks.
The pasta dishes in particular were exceptional. I thought the service was a bit scattered.
Every dish we ordered was fantastic! Shared a few pasta dishes among two people and were full. Even the focaccia bread appetizer was great. Will be coming back someday for sure.
most dishes extremely salty, meatballs were terrible. However the foccacia and whole chicken marsala were standouts. Other than that the meal was entirely forgettable and overpriced....
Great must visit North Beach gem with hand crafted drinks and thoughtfully prepared food! Take your time and eat your way through the menu; EVERYTHING IS DELICIOUS! Yum!
So welcoming, great staff, incredible food...fun atmosphere...very loud, but it works because everyone is excited to be there! Loved it!
Tosca Cafe is fantastic. The food is delectable and being able to see in to the kitchen is nice. Service was on point and everyone seemed involved and energetic. Great environment.

Excellent menu. Most food was very good but apps were imperfect (undercooked sweetbreads)... Would still be back anytime.
We reserved a table approximately 3 months ago and I only found out the day before that there was a nye menu and only when we got to the restaurant we found out that we could not order off the a la carte menu on your website.I'm really disappointed because we didn't have a choice to change venues because everything was booked out and my mother (visiting from Australia) wasn't able to eat a lot from either menu and yet we still paid over $500 for the night and she left hungry. I don't think serving raw vegetables warrants paying $85 and also sharing a dessert. In addition we felt the courses came out straight after one another and we felt extremely rushed as though we were being forced out. The atmosphere is lovely in your restaurant and we have heard really good things so we have left really disappointed on our special New Year's Eve night out.
In addition I had written to Tosca asking if there was a time limit to the table and if after woods we could sit at the bar however no one returned my email.
Not wanting the holiday prix frix menu we ate delicious appetizers at the bar. Lucky to be seating where we could observe the precision with which chef Justin prepared the most delicious Baked Alaska.
Bartenders Justin and Adon along with server Lisa made the evening delightful.
1/2 chicken (albeit tender and tasty) for two @ $42 - guess I'm paying for the ambience- except that was lacking in the windowless dungeon of the back room. I'd rather spend a bit more for Zuni's whole chicken and far better bread.
Tongue was bland and not well presented. Accompanying carrots were unrecognizable in appearance and taste. Pasta portion was minuscule.
Potato side dish was very over- fried potatoes with an impenetrable crust.
I was called one days prior to confirm which I did- fine, that seems standard.
But was called again the day of the reservation and the call dropped while I was driving.
I was then scolded at the front desk for not having an up to date number.
My experience at The Spotted Pig was significantly better than this and led me to try out this West Coast Bloomfield production...wish I hadn't.
I am not a tourist - live and work in SF- dine out frequently- and won't be going back to Tosca. Further I'll be quick to warn friends to avoid.

This was a special occasion meal and I was thoroughly disappointed.
Fantastic pasta w pancetta. Cippino with seafood was delicious. Really inventive menu. Great desserts.
Great authentic Italian food. Gets crowded very quickly, so plan accordingly.
Being a native of SF and having enjoyed Tosca in it's more original days, I found the reincarnate to be contrived, noisy and the food selection was perplexing. The food was prepared well enough, but the choices and ambiance were diner-ish, and more suited to the millennial scene. Although they have a wine director, the staff didn't' seem to have good knowledge of the wine list, which was extensive on the italian side. We probably won't be returning, but glad to see there is still life in the neighborhood gem.
Never been treated in a more condescending way by a restaurant. Waited over an hour for food when my party was two people in a restaurant that had several empty tables. When we asked for the check and the food that hadn't come yet to be in a box, the manager made us feel like it was our fault because we didn't tell the waitress we had to "rush" (but two people on a weeknight to eat dinner shouldn't take more than 75 min) then wouldn't give us the food that hadn't come yet. Instead she guilted us by paying for the check for us but it was clear the food hadn't even been fired yet. The manager was so condescending and made and already uncomfortable situation significantly worse. We had already asked for the check three times before she came over but her bus girls were more than happy to top off our water glasses 100 times. The food we did eat was good but don't go here unless you have at least two and a half hours to spare and don't mind living by someone else's rules.
Delicious food. Creative but classic menu.
We chose Tosca for many reasons. The restaurant had a strong history in SF, we heard that the food was delicious, and the bar made good drinks. All of that was and is true. But from the moment my party sat down in a booth there was loud rock and roll music which did not match our mood and it did not seem to be the right music for a classy place for a holiday dinner. The waitress did respond to our complaints about the music by lowering the volume. Later as the evening went on, opera music was eventually played, which seemed more in harmony with the the atmosphere and the identity of Tosca's. The pleasure of our evening would have been greatly enhanced by a different sound track from the beginning.
The food is amazingly good and service is fabulous. About 6 different persons waited on us at some time during our dinner.
Just too darn loud, literally had to shout at each other to be heard and was very disappointed in our food. Was expecting much more from the kitchen especially with Chef April Blumfield's (sic?) input. I would return but only for a cocktail
The ambiance and food were good! The service was very curt and confusing. 4-5 different people waiting on us and yet no real personality or follow up to see how everything is or was!

This is our first visit. Good cocktails and 4 great appetizers is how we started. We loved the egg tonnato (better than in Italy), moscardini, hot and crispy foccacia, and out of this world crispy pig tail. We followed up with 2 pastas and 1 entree. The bucatini, rigatoni, and grilled beef tongue are good and flavorful, but been already rich, the kitchen doused unbelievable amounts of olive oil as it left the kitchen and made everything oily and too rich. I couldn't finish the beef tongue as it was swimming in olive oil. Please try the tiramisu and cannoli. I would definitely come back and eat at the beautiful bar and have cocktails, appetizers and dessert!
Tosca Cafe has a fun, urban vibe, very urbane and of the moment. The staff was uniformly warm, welcoming and personable. We were even traded from our first waiter to our second in a charming way. The dinette feel of the booths and tables feels a tad downscale for the prices, but we got over that. We ordered one of the special starters, za'atar-flavored Brussels sprouts chips, then moved onto the seasonal apple-persimmon-Prosciutto and the house salads. We each had a pasta--the chicken liver rigatoni and the lumaconi with lemon breadcrumbs (and more Prosciutto). We then shared the roast chicken.
I worked in restaurants in SF and NYC for twenty years as both a server and a cook, and only one other time have I been to a restaurant where the food was oversalted like this. And that's a shame, because the ingredient quality was stellar, and the flavors underneath the saltiness of each and every dish were clearly deep and layered. Even the gelato I ordered for dessert was flecked with salt crystals!
A huge thanks for the outstanding service: this is the sort of restaurant where the staff could be intolerably aloof, and you'd shrug and take it. But from front door to back, first greeting to bartender's farewell, we were made to feel incredibly welcome. Sean K. was our wonderful, warm, attentive waiter, but the auxiliary staff members were as well. Kudos for a front-of-house staff like that.
The service was a bit spotty and prices a bit high for the food, so next time I come back to Tosca will be for a drink at the bar.

Great feel to the room, small cozy dining space past the bar. Service was spot on. Interesting Italian food. Meat platter and Moscardini starters were outstanding. Bucatini and grilled polenta with wild mushrooms great choices as well. Finished it all with chocolate sorbetini that was fantastic
I was so disappointed in Tosca! I love April Bloomfield and used to live down the street from the Spotted Pig in NYC and go there all the time. Have also tried the The Breslin, which was great. I was excited that she took over Tosca, an SF institution. It was my birthday and we (4 of us) arrived 30 minutes early. We weren't seated until 30-45 AFTER our reservation time. The manager did bring us a round of drinks (the bartender and cocktails were the one bright spot in the evening), but by the time we were seated we were beyond hungry. Unfortunately, the food took forever to come out, and when it did, it was disappointing. I never write a bad review, but April should know that Tosca is not living up to her NYC standards.
My last dinner at Tosca was lackluster. Something must have gone wrong in the kitchen, because my two favorite dishes: the shells with pepper and the smashed pumpkin were disappointing. The sauce on the shells had separated and the smashed pumpkin was discolored and tepid. I did not complain at the time, because I was with friends who were trying the restaurant for the first time, and I did not want to spoil it for them. But I knew the difference, and knew we were served food that wasn't up to the Tosca standard.
The first time my husband and I went to Tosca Cafe we had a really great experience - fantastic food that was the best we'd had outside of Italy. We were also with our toddler, and the wait staff were very gracious about that. But on this recent trip, myself and two friends were disappointed - bread was dry, polenta was dry, salad was overly vinegary. The pasta was good (we love both the bucatina and the conchigle) but quite spicy. We will try this again, but only because our first experience was so good.
Five stars across the board for Tosca. It fits The North Beach and San Francisco like a glove. Most real San Franciscans have a story to tell about the original iconic TOSCA and can describe the majestic coffee urns and opera stuffed Seeburg of yesteryear. Maybe they have a story about Willie Brown or Pavarotti or Nureyev at the old bar listening to Caruso sing. To take on such a landmark would shake most Chefs and Bartenders, no matter where they fell to earth from but this reincarnation has made the great Tosca an even better place to eat and drink. To reopen Tosca in The North Beach is like opening a Paris restaurant next door to Le Grand Vefour. This neighborhood belongs to Jack Kerouak, Alan Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlingheti, Lenny Bruce and Phyllis Diller and The Purple Onion - where the Beat generation was formed and where On The Road began. The food is excellent and wonderfully creative Italian. You will have to go see for yourself. Even weeknights are crowded. But old San Francisco swells and new dot-com futurists are altogether at home here. It is high energy at Tosca. Things move fast here. I took my most critical friends here and they raved. Go. See for yourself. An important restaurant. We are grateful for her renaissance - Tosca is worthy of The North Beach and San Francisco.
We hadn't been to the city in a long time so we were really looking forward to a nice dinner before going to a concert that night for my birthday. Although the menu was limited the food was good. It was the service that was terrible. We won't be going back to Tosca again.

My husband and I had a great time eating/drinking at the bar. Miguel was super helpful and had great recommendations. We had reservations, but were basically ignored by the waiters because the hostess wasn't around. Seems like they are so used to dealing with tourists, they don't care about providing great service. Also, the beef heart we ordered never showed up. The food we did order was delicious, however.
