Tortilla Coast - Capitol Hill
Book your next event with us
Hope I wouldn’t go there again.
For years, Tortilla Coast has been my go-to lunch choice on Capitol Hill, known for its reliable service, good traditional Mexican dishes, and quick service - it's not uncommon for me to eat here more than once in a week. However, since the arrival of the new menus, something in the kitchen has broken down. Gone are the "how'd-they-make-it-so-quick?" delivery of my Sunset Burrito, allowing me a sit-down meal between Hill meetings. The new menu has brought long waits and staring nervously at the clock. How many bowls of chips & salsa can I eat? It was four, apparently, while we waited...and waited. I suspect I'm not the first person to notice this sudden departure - I urge the management to pay special attention to keep this special delivering what its customers want.
This Capitol Hill institution is a reliable source of good, reasonably priced Mexican food. Being open for brunch on weekends is a bonus.
We so loved our waiter Jose!
One particular man dining alone had a lengthy and loud conversation with someone 2 tables away.... I’m in DC so they were discussing differing political opinions but it was overpowering & ruined my meal.
The food was great as usual but the service was just the best. Edwin waited on us and he's terrific.
We had 8 people in our party and they were able to seat us right away and immediately brought water and homemade chips and salsa! They were delicious!! The wait staff was very attentive and the food was plentiful and great!
Good frozen margaritas.
Food used to be great, just sub-par on this visit. Service was soooo slow, had to wait ages for our food.
Went because I wanted tacos and they had hard shell ones, wasn’t disappointed.
My boyfriend and I stopped in for lunch after touring the Capitol Building. We could immediately tell that we chose a good spot because we could see plenty of locals on lunch break from working on Capitol Hill. We weren’t wrong. I ordered the Coast Tacos with ground beef and my boyfriend ordered the Blanca’s Tacos al Carbon with chicken. The tacos were amazing! They come with rice and beans, and the rice was to die for!
From out of town and wanted to try something local. Great food and prices, attentive server, quirky fun atmosphere. One of our best overall dining experiences during this trip.
The chips were greasy, the service was non existent, the place was dirty. Would not go back.
Quick service. nice atmosphere. window table was a bonus!
Below average food and service is very poor, even when the place is empty.
Tortilla Coast is a neighborhood standby, there when needed. Great location, very good service, good space, good drinks, inexpensive. Only downside is the food, which is only OK.
It was great
Dropped in for Tortilla Coast's (rare, Sunday!) Happy Hour following a Capitol Hill event. Great margaritas and beer choices, plus some bargain-priced Happy Hour snacks, although we think on our next visit we'll start to investigate the regular menu, too! Terrific, friendly, helpful staff who seemed nice to everyone who walked through their door! If you can find on-street parking on a weekend (during the work week this is likely an impossibility) Tortilla Coast fits the bill of a friendly neighborhood watering hole and casual eatery. Smiles (and Margaritas!) all-round! :)
Very good waiter and food
Great place for tacos right off of the metro.
Lots of fun and relaxed. Food was spot on, but the service was a little slow.
Its a nice place to eat good atmosphere great happy hour menu and good swirls
Website advertises happy hour every day of the week, but there was not happy hour on Cinco de Mayo. No Cinco de Mayo specials either.
When we got to the restaurant I told them we had made a reservation. The host said that there would be a 10-15 minute wait. I asked, do you see my reservation? And her response was yes, but there is only one host so there will still be a 10-15 minute wait. She also recommended a restaurant around the corner we could go to where there may not be a wait. What was the point in making a reservation? We ended up going down a little further to Sanphan Thai Cuisine and it was crazy busy and the food was delicious!
Very quiet but the breakfast burrito was brilliant! Should be busier !
Those are the greasiest chips ever. Had to sop up the grease with my napkin before eating. Please change the cooking process or something.
The restaurant needs to be renovated. The service is awful. The server and hostess were not welcoming.
We came after a Capitol Tour because we were told it was a local haunt.
The staff was very friendly.
The queso with ground beef and quacamole was very good. The salsa was ok.
We ordered the shrimp tacos, Baja fish tacos, regular beef taco meal and the beef chimichanga and kids taco and fries.
The beef tacos were just not good. No one at the table enjoyed them.
The rest was between good and ok.
The price was over $80 for a family of 5.
The portions were large and we heard they have a great Happy Hour.
My family appreciated it for what it was...local,close to the Capitol.
We appreciated our servers greatly.
Good Stuff Eatery is a burger and fry place close to the Capitol too...would go there next time.
We loved it so much, we came back 2 nights later! The shrimp quesadillas were the best ever.
They closed at 9 while still taking reservations beyond that time. Disappointed but at least Eddie is back!
They are so very nice and very attentive, but the food completely misses the mark. We would have done better at Chipotle. Very disappointed and expected more from this Capitol Hill eatery. We can handle the gritty atmosphere if the food is authentic and hits the mark, but this was not the case. I wish I didn’t have to report this, but feel other Open Table’ers should beware.
My husband and I had a delicious dinner at Tortilla Coast! We were treated like family. Highly recommend!!!
The Customer Service was excellent. I thought it was quite cozy. Enjoyed my meal w/company!
Floor was dirty. Table was dirty.
Great atmosphere, terrific food and drinks and the service is fantastic. Their place is the real deal!!
Food was tasty but not spicy. Salsa and chips were excellent.
Service was good.
The food was fine but kind of bland and uninspired. The margaritas tasted like they were made from a cheap mix. The server was very nice, but took forever to ask us if we wanted a second round when our glasses were empty. She just disappeared. After we ordered a pitcher of margaritas to avoid having to wait again if we wanted more, she kept coming by to tell us it was "on its way" (same with the food). It was very slow (Sunday night) so I don't know what was taking the bartender or the kitchen so long. This place may be OK for a quick work lunch but with so many great places to eat in DC why waste your time on mediocre fare with slow service. I've had better from many local food trucks.
The Sampler Platter was great, a good mix of everything! LOVED the margarita pitchers for $27! The food was great and the place was fun!
Perfect for meeting up before a concert at Nats Park!
The food was AMAZING... I couldn't finish my burrito! Definitely a good, clean taste- not overly salty or oily and the waitstaff is very attentive!
