I'm really glad that I finally found this place!! I have lived in and around this area for 30+ years and I never knew that this superb restaurant even existed. However, after going there for the 1st time this past Saturday night with my wife, I am certain that we'll be back again soon. The service is very nice and the people are very cordial. However, it's the food that truly stands out. The presentation was beautiful and inventive. From the very inventive and creative appetizers to the absolutely wonderful specialty rolls, this place has among the best sushi that I've ever had. If you're in Northern New Jersey, you really need to make the effort to find this place. You definitely won't be sorry!
The menu is great, but the specials always add something new and interesting. The staff is so friendly and are so attentive. Glad to see they are still in business after so many years. Keep up the great work!
After reading a bunch of great reviews I finally had dinner here. The atmosphere is clean and warm (despite a great view of the parking lot and the backs of other buildings). Parking is free after 7pm. The fish was fresh and the rice was seasoned very well. The tuna dumpling was an interesting take on a "crab cake" that was light and refreshing. We also enjoyed various combo plates for dinner. The rolls were clean and stayed together (dislike when they fall apart) and the sushi and sashimi were cut and presented beautifully. Have decided to make this our regular sushi spot.
Many sushi places to choose from, but Toro has them all beat. The fish is so fresh and very well and flavorfully prepared (the naruto rolls of tuna and whitefish are our favorite) and the owners are warm and inviting. Sometimes things get busy but you know the wait is worth the prep time. There is a lot to choose from, especially if you don't want rice or gluten (I love the Asian spring rolls and tuna kanuta). If you prefer rice rolls, the Conga roll is a treat. And when they make their special eggplant appetizer.....well, Toro is always on the short list, even with the parking lot view....
When it comes to sushi you have to be very careful where you eat. Toro Sushi Bar was not only delicious, but it looked very clean. The sushi was fresh and delicious. The prices are great and the ambiance was outstanding.
It took 10min for the hostess to even make eye contact, they ignored the reservation that was made and a table happen to open up, it took another 10 min to sit down and another 10 min for are waitress to even see us for the first time. Then worst part, it took over an hour for are food to finally be served. It wasn't just are table, the 3 tables around us were starving too or it took them 25min to run a credit card. Ever time we asked the always said just a little bit longer. The part that passed me off the most was a table in the back was able to sit, order, eat and leave before we got our food.
Exceptionally good "neta" (Japanese for the fish used in sushi/sashimi dishes) in a small family owned and run restaurant hidden away in an off-street location in Upper Montclair... of course, that means it is convenient to the local amenities (movie theater, ice cream shops), never a problem to park, a safe location and truly authentic Japanese food.
We had 2 soups, 2 apps and 4 rolls total and spent $44! Everything was delicious and service was pretty quick. There's a liquor store in the same shopping mall so pick up a bottle of wine before heading over. Great night out!
This is the type of place that after you go once or twice they remember you. The menu is good and everything is fresh and delicious. I think the portions of apps are just right and the prices are very good. A go to place for excellent sushi, good and friendly service, and overall just great informal dinner out with friends or family.
We have been going since they first opened. Staff is consistently friendly. The food is excellent. Very creative specials.
Excellent sushi - some of the best that we have ever had. Prices were just right. We went on a Saturday night and was sad that there were only a few tables of customers. There was no need to have a reservation. It's a very casual place, so no need to dress up. The food was fantastic! - but the ambience was only so so.
Toro Sushi is one of the best sushi restaurants in NJ. In fact, it is on par with some of the best sushi in Manhattan. The freshness of the food, the bite size portions of fish (yes, it's not supposed to be an entire fish on top of each piece of sushi) and the excellent service combine to make for a memorable dining experience. Don't miss it!
Whatever the occasion, Toro Sushi Bar has become my favorite restaurant. Whether it's date night, family night, or I'm out with friends, Toro has a selection of delectable sushi and kitchen entrees to suit my taste, my mood and my wallet. The fish is fresh with specials that change frequently based on availability. There is always something new to try, or I can order my menu favorites. The kitchen menu includes homemade gyoza - you can taste the difference! Toro's service is top-notch and the noise level is typically quiet. With their quality, delectable food and an atmosphere conducive to both relaxing with family or having fun with your friends, Toro will be a restaurant I continue to frequent!
Excellent fresh fish, well prepared, nothing too fancy or diverse. Wonderful warm family owners, less than idyllic setting off the parking lot but return time and again for the food and low key atmosphere. Lots of other regulars do too.
Well hidden off the beaten path.
Peaceful decor, friendly service and delicious sushi.
This place is tucked away in a small mall area. Would have never found this without opentable. The decor and ambience are nothing special, but the food was actually very good. I had the sushi sashimi dinner and it was very delicious. They do not skimp on the amount of fish they give you either. Had the tuna dumpling and that thing was packed with meat! The owner even gave us free green tea ice cream for being their first opentable customer!
