Toro Latin Restaurant & Rum Bar Ratings and Reviews
This restaurant is part of Fairmont but not located at the hotel itself. Plenty of parking at night. The live music pipped into the outside dining area was very loud to the point that it was difficult to have a conversation with my tablemates. Several items ordered from the bar were out of stock. Average to above average dining experience but will probably not return as nothing special about the experience
We were staying at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess resort. We wanted to try something new to celebrate our anniversary while on vacation. The menu is very diverse from small plates to full size entrees. We orded way to much but enjoyed every bit of pur choices.
We came to do some rum tasting, along with some small bites, and were very pleased. We started with some excellent cocktails and then dove into the menu. There were great food choices, including a variety of sides, appetizers, and "suviche" (a mashup of sushi and ceviche). We had heard about their "Rum Princesa" but she was off this night; however, John at the bar was very knowledgeable, personable, and helpful as we navigated their rum list. They must have trouble keeping up, because they have far more rum varieties that the menu indicates, and John put together some custom tasting flights to meet our requests. I loved that they had $3 fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies for dessert, because sometimes you are full but want just a little something, and not a huge dessert. I don't know why they talk about Central and South American influences...it seems more like a mix of Mexican, Caribbean, and Asian. But the food was very good. We plan to go back and try more rums!
we had reservations and there were a number of vacant tables when we arrived. The host was insistent that we be seated next to the band. When we explained that we would be unable to hear to converse and wished to be seated at a vacant table away from the music the host was adamant that we could not be seated elsewhere and that the vacant tables were reserved for later that evening. We were insistent and seated ourselves at one of the tables away from the music. After that "table" incident, both the supper and service were very good. We have dined at Toro previously and enjoy the menu.
We started out with the scallops appetizer. Plain and simple it was excellent. We continued the meal with the tuna roll, the pork belly mac n cheese, Mexican street corn and the steak stir fry. The flavor profiles were on point and the contrast in textures made this an exceptional meal.
Its unfortunate that my experience wasn't good. I had been to Toro once before and really enjoyed the food and cocktails. Made a 7pm reservation and wondered why my friends and I were being rushed to order. Kitchen was closing at 7:30. When Toro called to confirm my reservation they should have told me. Our food was less than stellar because we had to rush and order. I know my friends who were looking forward to trying Toro will not give it a try again which is ashame since they practically live at Bourbon Steak for dinner.
The decor is pleasant, but in a "next to the golf course" way. The strength is the rum bar, which we don't drink.
But, the service was really outstanding. We were visiting for our anniversary and everyone made us feel welcome. The beet salad was terrific and I'm a midwestern guy! Good entrees. Fantastic desert.
We thoroughly enjoyed Toro.
Sean was our server and was OUTSTANDING. He went above and beyond to carter for my family's food allergy limitations. He was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about providing exceptional service. He did that and more! Thanks for making our night perfect, Sean.
The service from the moment we entered was over the top. Greeted by name from our waitress to the manager. The waitress was very pleasant and appreciative of our business. Menu had a broad offering and our meal was not only fabulous tasting but looked like a work of art. I can't begin to tell you how amazing the staff treated us. We will definitely return and share with friends.
Our server (Susan) was great - very knowledgeable, great suggestions, personable. We ate on the patio, nice view of the golf course. The mai tais and mojitos were yummy, the good rum makes a difference! All of our food was fantastic - provoleta as a starter, sea bass ceviche, house made braised rib empanadas and bacon wrapped pork tenderloin. I mentioned in passing when we were seated that my husband and I hadn't been on a date for quite a while and when it came to dessert, they comped our ricotta fritters and cappuccinos to thank us for choosing them for date night! Definitely would go back!
