We tried two of the three available full menus with wine flights. The food is out of this world. The wine pairings are perfect to highlight the extraordinary flavors in the food and characteristics of the wine. Staff was outstanding. Service a was excellent with just the right explanation of the dishes and wines. Unobtrusive and extremely educational. An amazing place.

Slow service. Dry fish. Noisy. The restaurant is adjacent to a busier restaurant with connecting door opening again and again with lots of noisy interference. Certainly not good for romantic evening. The tables are too close to have personal communication. Menu items were not warm. Overall it should not have a Michelin star.

This was an amazing dinner! Firstly, it's amazing how well the door between Topolobampo and Frontera works because the restaurant was shockingly quiet considering the noise at Frontera. Secondly the service was great! Our server was Eric and he knew the menu very well, was personable and very attentive without being overbearing. And lastly the food was amazing! We tried their winter beach tasting menu which was all seafood and was very well thought through. This is a wonderful place for a special occasion.

AMAZING! I took my boyfriend for his birthday and the entire staff left him a signed birthday card on the table. Very personal, exceptional service. Would gladly spend my hard earned money there again.

I've been wanting to dine at Topolobampo for years. I could quickly see why this restaurant has been a fixture in Chicago's dining scene for decades. Every course on the tasting menu we had was absolutely delicious and filled with perfect flavors. The margaritas were fantastic, and we each indulged in a couple. Then....we decided to peruse the wine menu for a glass to pair with our final courses, when our server strongly suggested a wine they were using for one of the menu pairings that evening. We agreed. It's funny, though not at all amusing, that our server didn't mention that the wine was $36 a glass. We were shocked and appalled to find when we got our bill that we'd indulged in $72 worth of wine! I loved this restaurant, and the food was so special, but we left upset by this poor experience. When the server sells a customer a glass of wine 3x's the price of other wines by the glass on the menu... the price should be noted. This was not right.

We were lucky enough to have lunch here during Restaurant Week. The 3 course menu was varied and provided options for each course. AT $22 -- it was an amazing deal. We also had the paired wine flight for another $20. The thought and effort of every dish, with rich broth or complex mole, was evident. the service was very polished &, at times, provided with a flourish (pouring of the soup from copper pots). Just loved it.

We chose a late lunch reservation which proved to be quiet and leisurely -- wonderful.

We went during restaurant week for lunch and had a wonderful meal. The mole was outstanding and I really enjoyed the non alcoholic scarlet wave. The dining room is warm, though it was a little noisy. Will be back.

The restaurant week lunch menu was about the same as their daily lunch deal ($3 off) so I'd go back for that. My fish was perfect with great flavor combinations. The ceviche came loaded on three chips and was a great starter. Surprisingly, the avocado ice cream in fruit water was delicious and satisfying. I found the crepe with chocolate too sweet and heavy (also much to my surprise because I generally think all real dessert has to be chocolate).

I don’t see why this is a Michelin level restaurant .. the service is not that good either. They didn’t inform us a pre appetizer is a changed one. $9.25 per one. And we wanted 2, neither of time the service said it’s a charged one, it’s like a bread they serve in normal restaurant, usually don’t charge. It’s okay they charge, but they never told us. Bad experience on service. Plus the food are not that good either.

This was the fourth time we are here. The food was not as good as in the past. We got the classic tasting and it seamed like the kitchen just didn't give it the care as in the past. The beef for the carne asada was tough and grisly. The kitchen should have not served it. I didn't say anything because it was my wife's birthday. The service was a little forced. They should decide if they want to be formal or casual but in between doesn't really work.

I loved this place .. usually they would allow us to pick and choose from their menus and make our own 6-9 course meal. This time around they were more strict in allowing us to change from their pre fixed menu. I really had enjoyed the flexibility ... so will now come less often !!

The food was good, but not special. That said, one of the small bites they brought after the meal was terrible . . . It tasted like a sponge that had been sitting in a glass of water with some black licorice, and I like licorice.
Generally, I don’t think I’m particularly sensitive to a restaurant’s service. There are places where I have been impressed by excellent service, but it usually won’t impact my overall impression. At Topolobampo I thought the service was horrible, almost entirely resulting from our server—everyone else was fine. First, I don’t expect a restaurant of this caliber to try to up-sell me, especially when the only options are three tasting menus (maybe it worked—we did order the most expensive one.) The wait at the end is really what ruined the whole experience for me. With one light dessert course left, I assumed we could get out in fifteen to twenty minutes. It took forty five with me turned in my chair toward the kitchen for ten minutes. Finally, I had to simply call out to our server as he walked by. I like to enjoy a leisurely meal, but we had already pushed our babysitter back by a half hour, and I figured with all the clues we were giving it wouldn’t be difficult to wrap up.

Excellent dinner on new year’s eve. Incredible food and excellent service. Mariachi band was playing but wasn’t too loud, our 14 month old even had an amazing time. We will definitely be back, special occasion or not.

We’ve been to Topolobampo on special occasions almost annually for well over 20 years, and never had less than a 5-Star experience. The decor is beautiful but tasteful, understated. The service is impeccable, formal if you’d like, less so if you prefer. The plate presentations are dramatic but not over the top. The cocktails and wine pairings are excellent. The food is just wonderful, better than many other world class tasting menus we’ve experienced where presentations seem to overshadow taste. And finally, the sauces at Topolobampo are otherworldly, moles, pipian, tomato/bacalao, pasilla chile, etc. - it’s would be tempting to lick the plate clean, fortunately they enable us with fresh tortillas.

I was concerned at recent reviews stating Topolobampo is inflexible with their menus? First, many tasting menu restaurants are indeed inflexible, Topolobampo has always allowed us to alter our menu if there was a course we didn’t want. And they did so again last night, at the end of 2017. I can only assume the reviews citing inflexibility were hoping to make major changes, even alacarte - no tasting menu caliber restaurant will allow that.

Thanks again to Topolobampo for a wonderful experience, we’ve never been disappointed in any way.

For must of us, Topo is not an every week or even every month kind of restaurant (read: very expensive and difficult to get in to). It is, however, a truly innovative, unique and delicious restaurant. The margaritas are the best I've ever had anywhere I've been in the US/Caribbean. The service left nothing to be desired. Tasting menu's only, though.

The small-plate tasting menu was a stunning surprise - we didn't realize the restaurant had dropped its excellent traditional dinner selections. It was stunning because the tasting selections and wine pairings were traditional yet inventive, authentic yet original, and completely successful in every way. The entire meal was a superb experience without flaw.

Extremely disappointing....started with having to provide a credit card for the reservation (what would they have done with it if I hadn’t shown up?) and then spiraled downward from there. The food was mediocre and the service was ok. Plus, we should be past the trend of having the waiter stop the table conversation to explain every ingredient in the dish. It’s not supposed to be about the chef or the restaurant, it’s supposed to be about the taste and the dining experience for the guests. We have been going to this restaurant off and on for the past 18 years and have always enjoyed it, but found them to now be pretentious and way overpriced. The saving grace might still be the margaritas. They are still top shelf ...tiny... but top shelf. Next time perhaps we will go to Frontera and have the “bar food”. Much more creative, interesting and at a far better price point. Plus you don’t get a seminar in food prep every time they drop off your plate.
