When you want to splurge in Chicago, this is the place to do it. The staff knows every detail of what they're serving. Every course was an incredible experience. Wine pairings are totally worth it. It's expensive, but you can see why when you indulge here.
The best restaurant in Chicago!
A dining “Event” not just a meal. Outstanding food, service, attention. A great special occasion restaurant.
Terrible service. Not just inattentive but the server chatted with other servers in the kitchen throughout the night and had a glass of wine at the bar. Simply horrible.
The food was amazing! Nothing like any other Mexican restaurant that we had ever visited.
The Mexican wines also very interesting. We loved it.
Incredible dining experience, I returned the following day for lunch at Frontera.
Overall I was very disappointed. I booked the table several months in advance because it is very difficult to get a reservation. I had previously gone for lunch during restaurant week and was excited to go and get the full experience. My wife and I both ordered the winter beach vacation menu. The taco course was good but not phenomenal. The lobster course was delicious and definitely the highlight. The lobster was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. Everything else was disappointingly mediocre on flavor. One of the courses was octopus which I was anxiously awaiting. The chef attempted to char the octopus for flavor but just ended up severely burning it. For the other courses given the reputation of the restaurant, I expected an explosion of flavor; I didn’t get that. For nearly $400 for the total meal, I was really expecting much more. The price certainly is not what scares me because I have been to many restaurants of comparable pricing and certainly have not left this disappointed. Perhaps it was an off night for the kitchen but for the money there are many other options that will draw me away from Topo.
Had a wonderful dinning experience at Topolobampo. We had the 5 course dinner. I was very happy that they had a vegetarian option, and it was a very well thought out vegetarian menu. Everything was delicious and beautiful. The noise coming from Frontera Grill can be a little distracting when the door opens but the noise level was fine overall. It was pricy but the value was good for a dinning experience like this. I appreciate the approach and respect to Mexican cuisine. Thank you.
A truly amazing dining experience.
I was disappointed by the fixed menu. When I previewed the menu online, there was a note that said if you wanted something lighter (than the 3 pre-determined options of 5 or 7 courses) your server would work with you. That wasn't true; they made me choose from the pre-determined options that were listed. This was also problematic because we had a 5:45 reservation and a 7:30 play to get to. They rushed to get us through the courses, and I was literally shoveling dessert into my mouth as I got up from the table. I realize it was the kind of meal meant to be enjoyed over a longer period of time, but that's exactly why I wanted fewer courses. I ended up feeling like I wasted $120, rather than having had a nice evening.
Fabulous and interesting food. I have eaten at top Mexican fine dining restaurants in Mexico city, and this was comparable. I was blown away by the flavors and will be back.
Great service and unique food. The staff was wonderful. Great drinks and great ambiance. However the food left something to be desired for the value. There was a large lag time between courses, and some dishes were under seasoned or a bit bland. Unique menu though and interesting dishes, but its less expensive brother restaurant Frontera gives you a similar taste.
The menu was too confusing and did not lend to our Friday during Lent dietary needs. However after explaining this to our waiter he found us a table at their el fresco restaurant next door. It was perfect for what we were looking for
We had the “Lunch in 60” and it could not have been more perfect. The food was exceptional. The service was outstanding.
Great experience all around.
I made this reservation about a month and a half before coming to Chicago, and I must say I don’t regret it. The food was spectacular, the service was absolutely impeccable. Alejandra was amazing and the busboys we’re excellent. I work in the industry so I would say I’m a bit ocd about service, but this was perfect. The cocktails were perfectly crafted, the guacamole, trio de ceviche and carne asada we’re spectacular. I will do a layover in Chicago just to stop by Topolobampo. My companions and I were truly impressed. Thank you so much.
Superb and not pretentious. Highly recommend.
The menu and diversity of the wine list is always intriguing. The staff is professional and attentive. The overall experience is vibrant, elegant, and personalized, whether it is for lunch or dinner. Highly recommend the seasonal tasting menu with the wine pairing. Elevated, yet approachable. One of the BEST.
Food was outstanding, service was excellent. Great birthday celebration
Loved it! Every dish was made to perfection and had unique flare. The area is closed off and quieter than Frontera but still pretty busy. Definitely a smaller space with less seating, but it makes the experience that much more exclusive. Be sure to try the prized mole!
I didn’t realize we had to have a 7course meal and I only eat fish (otherwise vegan, and i couldn’t even get a salad because i would’ve had to choose the other menu with lots of meat)and my sister is allergic to Serrano Chile’s and my father doesn’t like shellfish of any kind. The desserts were overpoweringly sweet. The coffee took forever. Would have much rather been on the other side for a meal we could choose and for much less $. It was a huge bill for food (over $700 not including tip)we couldn’t even eat much of. I am so bummed out.
Perfect preparation and presentation of a classic Mexican tasting menu. Flavors were authentic, rich and creative. Have wanted to dine here for ages and on a whim got a late reservation. The food did not disappoint. Only negative was service....which was curt and a bit surly.
Excellent food and service. Seating is a little crowded.
30th Anniversary
Amazing! Thanks to Linda and Rich
Awesome meal! Glad I went. It’s one and done for me as it was very expensive but no regrets.
We felt a bit rushed and talked into all ordering the same tasting menu. Loved all of our servers, just medium on our head waiter.
Food was unique and I didn't feel the need to eat afterwards as i have in the past with other tasting menu restaurants. Came for a bday celebration and she enjoyed it so that's all I really wanted out of the night. Waiters were very informative and attentive. Didn't know they were charging for sparkling water till we got the bill. (Bummer) Overall, we had a very nice dinner
Great service and everything you would expect from Chef Bayless. My third trip to this trio of restaurants. Well worth the price!
The food was amazing. The 5 courses was plenty. I’m not normally a dessert person but the Frontera Tabasco might be the best dessert I’ve ever had in my life. Our server Eric was very knowledgeable and gave great direction. Amazing experience.
Won't be back for another 10 yrs. Not impressed.
My only complaint I was poured a half glass for a margarita and there were fish bones in my trout which I would never expect for this Michelin star restaurant. Very surprised by that. Otherwise fabulous food and experience
The food was everything we wanted it to be. It was disappointing that the servers/food runners couldn’t answer questions about the courses when they were coming out. We were there to be excited about the artistry and creativity of the food. It was disappointing the servers had a “just the messenger” approach to friendly questions. The servers were also kind of pushy about adding onto the tasting menu and seemed disappointed when we didn’t order espressos, and pairings, and more on more. It felt as though they were motivated to “up-sell” and not to provide a pleasurable dining experience. As an “inspired” dining connoisseur, I’ve left good restaurants as impressed with the front of the house as I was with the back. This was not that experience.
Thank you for a lovely lunch! We had a great time. :)
Second special family birthday celebration at this wonderful place — transporting! A very unique experience!
Wonderfully inventive and delicious Mexican food. Wish I could have gone for dinner to try the tasting menu.
Seriously amazing experience! Great flavors and very thoughtful pairing. Our server Alfredo was beyond helpful. An amazing night!
Amazing-Very good experience and wonderful service.
We tried two of the three available full menus with wine flights. The food is out of this world. The wine pairings are perfect to highlight the extraordinary flavors in the food and characteristics of the wine. Staff was outstanding. Service a was excellent with just the right explanation of the dishes and wines. Unobtrusive and extremely educational. An amazing place.
Slow service. Dry fish. Noisy. The restaurant is adjacent to a busier restaurant with connecting door opening again and again with lots of noisy interference. Certainly not good for romantic evening. The tables are too close to have personal communication. Menu items were not warm. Overall it should not have a Michelin star.
