We had a very quiet evening because there were very few people dining. We always enjoy the ambience.
The swordfish I ordered was cooked too much. Very dry...the atmosphere and service were very good though. A good quiet place for a meeting over lunch.
Delicious seafood; lobster, scallops. Awesome service and a dining experience where we could actually have a conversation and hear each other.
The food and ambiance were excellent; seafood was fresh, and perfectly prepared. The service was a little slow, but not bad, and the server was very friendly and polite. Definitely recommended for a nice seafood meal.
i come here often, the food is excellence as well as the view
A quiet relaxing dinner. Service was excellent, very attentive but not disruptive. Quality tableware set this location apart. Nice selection of meals on menu.
I’ve eaten at Top of the Market dozens of times over the past 4 years and the was the only time I was disappointed. The table was bad (even though only five other tables were seated the entire time I was there), service was very slow (over an 30 minutes after apps and salad to get the main course) and the food was bad (for me - “fresh” Dungeness crab that was dry and tasted as if it had been cooked days earlier and microwaved, and for my partner fish and chips so hard he literally chipped a tooth)
Throughout most of the evening the kitchen staff could be seen huddled in one corner, joking with the busboy, reading a magazine, glancing at their phones or doing anything other than cook. It wasn’t until the chef appeared about 50 minutes into the meal that the staff began to actually do something productive and food (although substandard) began to leave the kitchen. Perhaps they’ve forgotten that they work in a show kitchen where their antics can observed by most of the dining room.
I would have likely written off all of these failures if it had been a busy night and they were understaffed, but there were only 5 other tables the entire time I was there.
After enjoying so many wonderful meals at Top of the Market, I suppose it was bound to happen — every place has an occasional bad night. So I will be returning to give them another chance and I’d encourage prospective diners to do the same; however, it will only be one more chance.
Amazing! Please get the cheese crab bread, it will change your life.
New Year’s Eve , 6:00 reservation. Top of the market was busy, service was slow only because of lack of servers. Dinner was late and at best room temperature. The experience took 90 minutes. The dinner was not worth the price. The best part is the night was the desert
A delightful evening. Good food, good drink, good service and good company. Salad and pasta hit the spot for the lighter fare we were looking for. Chef met our requests for light on the cream for our individuality prepared plates. All was nicely done.
Slow, inattentive service
Excellent service....above and beyond our expectations. We have been to this location every year for the last 28 years on our anniversary and we always have an enjoyable experience. This year we inadvertently left our keys in our car, and our Hostess/waitress we out of her way to help us contact our roadside assistance....made it a lot less stress and believe she really went above and beyond. Anyway in addition the meal was excellent.
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary by having dinner at our favorite local restaurant. We highly recommend trying the restaurant when you next dine out.
Very disappointed in the menu. Was hoping for lots of fish options like downstairs but there were none. The oysters on the half shell were excellent. I ordered the Poke and I don't believe the menu said it was spicy because had it said so I would not have ordered it. But, it was spicy with chili oil which spoiled it for me.
This used to be one our favorite places. Although the views are still amazing, our food was not good. Overcooked salmon and poor crab.
Dependably excellent food + timely and friendly waitstaff. Also located at the "geographic center" of the Bay Area. Perfect for business or social meetings.
Surprised that the Top menu was so different from downstairs at Fish Market. Used to have about 75% overlap. Apparently two different companies now. Too bad.
Have been a repeat diner here for decades and have watched the sad decline. It started off great years ago, and was clearly a notch above the restaurant below. With each management change, we experienced a decline in menu offerings. Then chefs came and went, and most cooking has been relinquished to line cooks who lack the innovation and knowledge needed to keep the"top" of market quality and reputation. Key food combos now, e.g., the Troll caught Local king salmon, are just inappropriate for the type of fish. Worse still, the price for the salmon at $42 is crazy for what you get: dried out,gas grilled salmon with this weird setup. Some of the best places in SF don't charge that and the quality and innovation of those places is far superior. This past visit, we had the salmon again....very disappointing. Neither the color (very pale pink) , nor the texture (dried out) , nor the taste (almost tasteless) seemed to support the claim of "Troll caught, local, wild, king..." I know this salmon well . Can no longer return, how desperate I am.
The food was amazing. The view was beautiful. It was our first time dining here, although we have been to the Fish Market numerous times. Great experience!
A nice place for a quiet business lunch. Varied menu, featuring seafood, of course. Desserts were an unexpected highlight. Attentive service.
I have been coming to this restaurant for my years and it has never let me down. I had a very delicious swordfish entree with a New England clam chowder. My wife was equally impressed with her sole and octopus appetizer.
Services was spotless as usual.
A must visit to all that love fish.
Our server was excellent and attended to all of our needs. I requested that they bring out a birthday cake that I brought in from the outside and they presented it beautifully and even cut it and served it to us. The food as always was excellent and the new furnishings really modernized the dining room. It's always worth the price you pay for the excellent food and service that you receive at the Top of the Market. The only problem was the parking. With the amusement rides in the location next door, the parking was more limited than usual. Even though we had a reservation at 6:30, there was no parking in the lot and our guests had to park in the roundabout near the library in the street. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is able to handle the stairs leading to the restaurant.
Outstanding food, with very good service and an awesome view. Food is pricey, though
Overall experience at Top of the Market has changed. The food was just okay and not as refined as the past. Our server was good, attentive, and friendly but our food not only took long but fish was over cooked and just ok. Even the cheesy bread with crab was over salted. The restaurant was not super busy and surprised that the overall experience from the past has changed. Unfortunately the overall experience was not worth the $300+ bill for three people.
Great lunch spot near my office. Fish and chips are always great. Clam chowder is also tasty.
Great food and service.
I've been dining at Top of the Market for years, and it is always good. The ambiance is great, the food is great, and the service is great. It is a little expensive, but here, you get what you pay for.
Best chef and service in the Peninsula. Filet is way better than Ruth Chris & the dishes change within the season. Always a great experience
Excellent. Everything and every employee made our dinner excellent.
Service much better than downstairs; great alternative to Fish Market, can alternate between the more casual Fish Market, and classier Top of the Market.
We received excellent customer service thanks to JT, Joey & Lisa. Everyone enjoyed their delicious 😋 dinner! We enjoyed the Halibut, Petrale Sole, Swordfish and Scallops. 😋
My business associate and I got our usual top class treatment from Top of the Market. It is a go to place.
Never a doubt on great food, service and ambiance.
Hot & stuffy. Manager wouldn’t allow the window to be opened. The waiter was polite but too busy chatting with the man prepping oysters. Had to ask for everything. The worst was the crab legs- $50 and full of water. Of course previously frozen but that’s really bad preparation. Won’t be back.
Better filet then Ruth Chris! Amazing every time
We are semi-regular customers. This visit was a disappointment! The restaurant had booked a table of approximately 20. Management made no adjustments to staff to accommodate 20 additional people plus their faithful regular customers? We waited a long time for our various servings. We actually went thru two bread baskets?
The staff did their very best. Dining out should be a great experience! It is important to be consistent with food preparation and customer service.
I have been many times to The Fish Market and enjoyed ever time. The Top of the Market was a disappointment to me and my guest. Pricy yes, but the chef was trying too hard. Plating was nice but the sauces overwhelmed the halibut ($43) and did not compliment the mashed potatoes. The few string beans across the mashed potatoes looked lonely and not very exciting. Overall an OK meal but I should have eaten downstairs where the fist is always simple and fresh and wonderful and much less costly.
Having gone to TOM for years, I was disappointed with this evening's food. The TOM salad was rather plain, and my salmon was overcooked and dry. The key lime pie was good. The service was good, although it seems like many of the "regular" waiters have left and things did not run as well as in previous visits
One of our favorite ‘nice dinner out’ places. The mascarpone cheesecake with port and berries was absolutely amazing!!
This restaurant sits one top of the Fish Market in San Mateo. We love both restaurants. Exceptional service and cuisine is what we always get when we come here. The fish is very fresh and the selections are very diverse. A much wider selection than any of the comparable restaurants in the area. Go and see for yourself, you will quickly become a fan too.
Lisa just does a great job of taking care of us at one of our favorite regular spots for business lunches. thanks.
