The food has slipped noticeably in the last few months. They dropped excellent first courses, e.g., beets and grilled octopus. They raised the entree prices while reducing the number of accompaniments. Saturday, my swordfish was bone dry.
Restore the menu you had 6=months ago and I'LL be back
We returned to Top of the Market for our wedding anniversary on October 10, and we are so glad we did. Everything was top notch -- food, service, drinks, view and value. The appetizers were fantastic. The Sea of Cortez Prawn and Dungeness Crab Cocktail was superior -- fresh, delicious and abundant crab and large prawns that snapped with freshness; the Ahi Poke was fabulous! Mains -- Atlantic Sea Scallops and Grilled Farm Raised Scottish Salmon -- were fresh and delicious. We shared a scrumptious lava cake for dessert. Drinks and wine were a fine accompaniment, especially the finely made apple-tini.
Definitely recommend Top of the Market for a special occasion with a water view!
I have to agree with other reviewers: I just don't see much point in going upstairs to Top of the Market rather than eating for more value downstairs in the regular Fish Market. Our food was very good, and I don't think my ahi tuna appetizer is on the menu downstairs, BUT, for the higher price, I just don't see much value. Yes, it's quieter for sure, classier, more sophisticated. You get a better view of the lagoon. But our server was just basic in her quality, nice enough, but seemingly more interested in other customers that she knew from prior trips and chatting with them. Prices are substantially higher upstairs as well. Also, they don't mention it anywhere, but be advised that you have to take the stairs (no ADA variations). I love the Fish Market and for the price and value, I'll stick with downstairs.
Though the restaurant had absolutely no handicapp accessibility and over 20 steps but the evening was not completely spoiled due to the perfect food and service. The restaurant over the lower Fish Market is less loud due the smaller size. The food was well prepared and fresh. I would return if it had better accessiblity. We were there for a birthday celebration and the lack of the roar of a massive restaurant patrons, like down stairs, made the evening comfortable for the birthday guest who has a hearing aide. I have a spinal injury which makes stair climbing painful, but the dinner was worth it to see my friend able to hear our conversation without yelling.
It should be noted issue was the Open Table's fault for not listing the lack of accessibility the restaurant itself was wonderful experience.
Gone down hill. Overpriced average food now. Two appetizers and two entries with no alcohol was $120.00. Cheesy garlic bread different than years past, not the same. Not sure but a Saturday night at 7pm the place was empty, only 2 other tables. They need to improve on quality and price.
It was my wife's birthday and "Top of the Market" is close to home. We walked upstairs and got seated immediately. Service was professional and friendly. We both chose Alaskan King Crab Legs. There were two large, juicy legs for each of us. Perfect. We finished with Key Lime Pie, oh me, oh my was it good. It was as good as down in the Keys. I'm guessing it was made with Nellie & Joe's key lime juice. A wonderful evening.
Very disappointed - Food Good, service terrible (3 1/2 hours with 2 kids) I called in and requested a bday dessert for a friend turning 80 and living alone. Hostess said that something would be done and reminded waitress - nothing was done! Plus an excruciating long time waiting for food.
What has happened to this restaurant in the last 6-8 months? The quality of the menu, the food and the staff has deteriorated to the point that I won't be going back anytime soon. Used to be very reliably excellent food that was always fresh and delicious, but my last several visits have not been good. Last night was more of the same... the waitress didn't get to us for at least 10-15 minutes, then after we ordered, the food took a half an hour to come, it arrived cold but oddly overcooked, no flavor and nothing looked or tasted fresh. Total Bummer.
Second time we have been here and both experiences were great. Not crowded (both times on a Saturday night with reservations) and we were able to have a conversation with each other which seems difficult in many places. Booths are great for conversation. We noted that it was our anniversary and both the hostess and our server acknowledged that by saying, "Happy Anniversary". Great place!
A big disappointment! A new menu and most of the good items are now gone. The crab cake was good but the new sole selection was bland and tasteless. Service was fine and the view was wonderful, as usual. We have eaten there many, many times but it will be a long time before we come back. Wonderful swordfish is gone and replaced with another swordfish selection which sounded unappealing. We were there on a Thursday night and the restaurant was almost empty. There must be a reason since it used to be packed almost every night.
The ambiance was okay, considering its waterfront, though, that's not so great. The Caesar salad was awful, terrible dressing. The fish stew was tasty but way too much octopus in the mix. I don't understand, also, why when you have a hot stew you would leave the tails on the shrimp so that they have to be peeled off by hand. The service was very nice. And the drink selection was fine. For the quality of the food, the prices were a little high.
So sadly, Top of the Market is not up to it usual game these last several months. Service is not is good as it used to be, and our food was disappointing, at best, this past Friday night. What happened to the Caesar salad? It used to be a well dressed whole leaf salad with house made croutons. Not on Friday night - lightly dressed chopped leaves with way too much Parmesan cheese and store-bought croutons. One entree was the scallops which looked terrible when they first arrived, because they were covered in balsamic and gave a gray-brownish color that made them look overcooked and mushy. Luckily they only looked that way - they tasted delicious and were cooked perfectly. For the Scottish salmon, it was on a bed of heat wilted lettuce with barely warm cheese tortellini and a sauce of sweet and sour barbecue with chunks of bacon. Basically a lukewarm mess and didn't complement the properly cooked salmon. The new menu needs a very close review and the front of the house staff needs to be better coordinated with the back of the house. It took us two hours to get this meal and the restaurant was not crowded at all.
The food was good--we ate upstairs at Top of the Market. Quiet, lovely view. Our evening was spoiled by the awful conditions of the women's restroom. No covers or paper of any kind; floor was littered, and trash can was overflowing. It definitely put a question mark on the overall cleanliness of the restaurant.
Service was slow in general. Party of 4. 3 people ordered the swordfish, and there were only 2 left; however that wasn't communicated until our food arrived. Our son had to wait while we ate our food for his new dish to be prepared. Disappointing. We got his meal for free, but it definitely put a damper on our meal.
Less oysters selections option then down stair at the fish market. The fish and chip has no taste at all. The batter outside was not crunchy, and slight over fried. Not recommended this dish at all. All other ahi tuna & ginger shrimp was just ok to meeh.
Only the crab cake was tasty, overall will prefer dining down stair at fish market next time.
Top of the Market has become our "go-to" place when we are looking to have a relaxing meal. The word is out on this place, and it was much busier Friday night than usual (which is good), but Colin took great care of us, and our food was outstanding (Swordfish and Fish n' Chips). Always great bar drinks and wine selection is good too.
Food was absolutely superb. Service was not. Had to ask for utensils, we were never given bread, had to ask for drinks , had to ask for menu , had to ask fir the bill. This would not of been an issue if the restaurant was full. There was probably 10 patrons in the entire restaurant. We sat at the bar and the chefs served us .
I had been supporter of this restaurant for years, but this was a horrible dinning experience for me this time! First, my cocktail was made with the wrong liquor, my hubby's Long Island tea tasted like straight up shots rather than tea! Long waits for appetizers, even longer wait for our sharing plates! After appetizers, the waitress told my hubby that they were halibut! So we all waited forever for our dinners since hubby changed his to scallop linguini. Finally, everyone got their entrees, expect mine! Everyone got their Alaskan king crab, seafood stews, scallops linguini, but where's my grilled scallops?! I had to ask the manager, why didn't they cook this while they made my hubby's pasta? Well, I waited for another 10 minutes, the scallops finally came! It was deep fried rather than grilled, it had a chemical cleaning detergent taste which was nasty! My son's seafood stew was supposed to spicy tomato broth, it was extremely creamy light pink sauce instead! Linguini was very soft, scallops also had chemical taste! Waitress was missing in action throughout the dinner, forgetful as hell, attempted to charge us the halibut that they sold out! No apology from her at all! The manager was nice to comp us part of the dinner, but our whole evening went down the toilet drain! My son only visit me few times a year, totally ruined our precious time together! They are definitely going down the hill fast! All sums up to Terrible services, horrible food!
Service was real poor today. Wine was marked 2012 on the menu was we were delivered a bottle of 2013
This was one of the most expensive bottles on the menu. When I pointed it out we had to wait 30 minutes before the server came back and offered 20/- discount for the mistake.
Good took a hour after that to be delivered.
In the past it has been a good experience but tonight it was real disappointment.
Very hit and miss. Mostly miss. Kitchen extremely slow. Fish and chips were uniquely tough and inedible (tough fish in the batter? yes, like nothing ever experienced or contemplated). Salmon over cooked. Mahi flavorless. Swordfish passable. A real shame. Great space. Great view. -- Also note: no elevator for less nimble diners. This is attempting to be a fancy addition to the dated Fish Market downstairs. It has promise but does not deliver.
What a disappointment. We have been going here for years, but something has happened to the quality of the food and of the service. It was 15 minutes before we saw our waiter, 30 minutes before getting our cocktails, 45 minutes just to get oysters (we ordered a dozen, they brought 6). The crab on the crab salad was not fresh and looked like grated cheese (sent it back). Finally, we ordered a second round of drinks which never came.
They were woefully understaffed (for a Friday evening), and we felt bad for the wait staff. But beyond that, the food quality has really slipped. Plus, with just one round of drinks, and an entree, the check was nearly $100.
This restaurant has always been top-notch; and even after our latest dinner there, we still highly recommend it. Even after.....our waitress asked if we wished cocktails and of course we did, with the stipulation NOT to serve any food until we finished our drinks. This was repeated several times. It did not sink in and before we could finish our first drink, the food arrived. Therefore, we had no opportunity to even consider a second cocktail. Regardless, this restaurant is still a gem.
Food was delicious and prepared well. This was a business dinner and we requested a corner table in a quiet area of the restaurant. The restaurant was not very busy Wednesday night and when we were seated, there were many empty tables around us and in the restaurant. No sooner are we seated, when they sat a young couple behind our table that were very noisy. There were several other empty tables where they could have placed them, knowing that we were having a business dinner.
We also had to ask our waiter for a glass of water three times before he brought water for the table. Again, the restaurant was not busy. Once we completed our meal, quite a while passed before our waiter returned to inquire whether we wanted coffee and dessert. There was another long lapse of time after that in receiving our check. Service was awful!
