Top of the Market Ratings and Reviews
We dined with another couple after a sunset harbor cruise. We were early for our reservation but they were able to seat us without an issue. We enjoyed a cocktail before ordering, sharing an appetizer. My wife is gluten intolerant but our server explained that most of the menu could be prepared gluten free. Two of us had a half Caesar salad which was very good. Entrees were divided between the cioppino and the salmon. Both were reported to be very good. Our server was hit and miss. He had a bit of humor and was available but not intrusive. He picked up on one of our friends preferences for her cocktail and got it exactly right. He neglected to let us know about an upcharge for having the crab in the cioppino removed from its shell. My wife's cioppino was served with regular pasta and she is GF. When we pointed it out, he apologized, took the dish away and replaced it (and later deducted it from our bill). It's a great location on right on the bay and the view is great (although I had my back to it). We've been there a number of times previously and will likely go back but we'd hope for a bit better service for the pricing.
Our server and dinner was wonderful. We didn't realize a menu item had some Gluten in it, the server was quick to rectify and offer suggestions. The bartender was considerate and helped me understand the makings of a lovely beverage. Definitely worth the visit.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the special dishes on that evenings menu. Our choices of swordfish and scallops were delicious and the accompanying side dishes were complimentary in flavor and texture. The restaurant is located on San Diego Bay and offers wonderful views of Coronado, North Island NAS and the USS Midway. A leisurely walk along the Embarcadaro or to Seaport Village, before or after your meal, enhances the overall experience.
First time dining on Top of the Market. While our server Amanda and ambiance were on point, the food did not fulfill our expectations. I enjoyed the spinach and cilantro dipping sauce served with bread along with the gambas al ajillo, and the clam chowder was very flavorful but too thick for my liking. The halibut was not what I expected. The fish was over cooked and overall the dish was bland.
Not impressed with the entré I chose but still a nice night out.
Enjoyed the food at the Top of the Market. The food was very good. My guests were from the East Coast and they really enjoyed the table that overlooked the bay. The service was excellent. The waiter suggested two white wines to go with out dinner selections and offered a taste of each which helped us make out decision about which wine we wanted by the bottle. I had the dover sole which was cooked to perfection and the octopus as a starter.
My guests each enjoyed their cocktails as did I. We were not rushed and we enjoyed the opportunity to catch up since we had not seen each other in a long time. The restaurant certainly lived up to its reputation.
Good lobster dinner and fish dinner for my wife and friends, however, the steak was horrible and I sent it back with the whole meal. The response to how bad the steak was (not cooked right, grizzly and extremely tough) was "we specialize in seafood". Well now I see why! Then take the steaks off the menu. Staff were fine and prices are high.
I’ve been regularly visiting the Fish Market for 27 years and since they originally opened. There’s simply no better restaurant in San Diego that consistently serves the finest quality fish. If you get a chance to dine upstairs skip the regular seating and sit at the end of the bar facing the grill. Watching how the dishes are created by the Executive Chef Stafford and all the teamwork that goes into the final presentations will be exceeded only by the taste of your food. Truly an amazing experience. And to top off your dining request to be served by Cliff if it’s possible. He’s a pro’s pro, and a consummate customer-service person. If he’s too busy handling the bar then at least have him make you a cocktail. The best server I know.
The service was outstanding from start to finish. Our server recommending sharing an entree because we wanted to try three different appetizers. She could have easily let us order another $40 entree and didn't. Thank goodness, because we couldn't even finish the split entree!!! The three appetizers were unbelievably good - the Tina crudo was so delicious. The crab cake was a touch of panko and otherwise all crab. The octopus was one of the best I've EVER had. All 3 were spectacular. And the cioppino entree was top notch. And the view of the sunset was unforgettable. I will be back. Waitress was wonderful! Everything was amazing from start to finish.
When four fish entrees are overcooked after requesting in detail for them to be cooked gently and delicately, and the waiter shrugs and says he can only request it but not guarantee it, you realize this is not a first class, fine dining restaurant despite their high prices. All four fish entrees were very overcooked and dry. A complimentary desert for half of us (supposedly to make up for the bad entrees) does not nearly make up for a ruined experience. We have given Top of the Market several chances and they blew it every time, so we will never return.
With our evening occupied by the Andre Rieu performance later, we decided to make lunch our celebratory weekend meal. Anthony’s Star of the Sea, regretably, is no more. But the Top of the Market equals its cuisine and surpasses its view. We also had a waiter who was attentive and pleasant to a remarkable degree. What a nice time we had!
