Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar - Mauna Lani, Big Island Ratings and Reviews
Our server Dillon or Dylan was very personable. Our food was served hot and was very tasty. The musician was perfect...his music was gentle and background so we could visit and still hear the music.. our table was close to him ..behind him, actually, and he came to our table to see how the music was and if we had any requests. It was fun.
Unfortunately, very slow service. It took 40 minutes to get one cocktail and the food arrived moments after. So much for having wine with my meal...not enough time to finish the cocktail! Food is okay. Noise level is off the charts loud. Will go to the nearby grocery store for takeout before ever returning here.
Staff wonderful and gracious on a very busy night - Valentine’s Day. Service excellent, very responsive without being overboard. Mahi mahi good, moist, cooked well. House salad excellent. Crab bisque wonderful. Cauliflower steak and vegetable plate poor. Not cooked well, not seasoned well, basically a plate of underdone vegetables with exception of faro salad. Dessert was good.
The food was delicious. My only complaint is that we were very rushed during the meal. We were just finishing our appetizer when the entree arrived. As soon as I finished my last bite the plate was taken away and we were asked about dessert. I said I was full however I did want to look at the dessert menu. We were never asked about coffee or tea and the bill was slapped on the table and we never saw the dessert menu.
We have been to Tommy Bahamas a few dozen time and it’s always great. But, on Tuesday the wait staff changed four times then went back to the original waiter. Service was good, but multiple staff members asked how everything was...seemed odd and felt like they were having an off night. We will keep going because the food is good.
The restaurant needs more waiting room area, it’s hard to leave when the tourists feel they don’t have to move out of the way.
We had the macadamia crusted mahi mahi, which was fabulous!! My husband had the daily special which was a swordfish like fish and also wonderful. Our only complaint was the wine list had wine, which when they brought them out were several years younger than on the list. When we finally found one that would do, it was way too warm (probably around 70 degrees) . This is not OK for this type of restaurant.
We eat at the Newport and Palm Desert locations regularly. The food quality and seasonings used weren’t comparable!! We would never eat at this’ll cation again. The recipes other than the butter aren’t the same!!!!
Filet flatbread was dry and the steak was not filet. The coconut shrimp were small and very greasy!! The shrimp stuffed with crab were good but the sauce had way too many peppers in it!! The cream of lump crab didn’t look like lump crab it was black and not tasty.
The 2 visits weren’t memorable
Salads, Coconut Shrimp & Thai Shrimp & Scallops were all very good. Service, Beth, was friendly & prompt. Have enjoyed 2 nice dinners here recently. Sure wish they still had their chocolate layer cake for dessert. It was the best ever but its no longer on the menu.
Scheduled our 50th anniversary dinner here. Food was excellent and service very well done, especially considering how crowded it was. Cocktails excellent too. However they dropped the ball on our anniversary cake which I had pre-ordered on the reservation form. I checked at the desk on the way in and they said they would have one, or maybe half a cake, which I agreed to pay for. There was no cake. No special anniversary presentation at all, no song even, just the usual tray of assorted desserts. So that moment was lost forever. Maybe that staff will realize what they cost us if any of them ever reach their 50th. I hope we reach our 60th so we can have a cake somewhere.
Overall the food was very good and the service was excellent but my biggest complaint is that the wine list is for the most part much too expensive for a restaurant like this. This is Tommy Bahama’s and we shouldn’t be seeing wine bottles in the $90’s and $100.
Very pleased with both service & food on this visit. We had the Spicy Ahi Poke, generous amount & very good. Shared the Shrimp Summer Roll, very tasty with large pieces of shrimp. The blue cheese on the wedge salad was excellent. The parmesan crusted swordfish was excellent along with the tasty risotto. No room for dessert on this visit but we'll be back. I think our servers name was Dylan. He IS very good. Pleasant, helpful & friendly. We've been here several times over the years & in the past the service & food was 'spotty'. They were Right On last night.
Pleasant second-floor restaurant with large balcony and big doors connecting the inside and outside seating. We had 2 elderly family members in our party and they were cold despite the mild weather, so our server and the manager were wonderful about adjusting the a/c and the overhead fans. I really appreciated how concerned they were with making everyone at our table comfortable. The food and drinks were tasty, and the overall ambiance is slightly tropical without being overdone. Our server really was superb and I'll happily return if I ever make it back to Hawaii!
