Tomaso's - Phoenix Ratings and Reviews
Took my wife here for our 30th Anniversary. She is quite the Foodie so I needed to find something different and good.
The service was excellent, the food was excellent, my only complaint is the Neighbors.....the table across from us had 12-14 people and for some reason they thought it appropriate to talk very loudly to each other. In an open floor plan like this is, that is less than respectful to other diners. I had to stop myself twice from approaching the people and calling them on their disrespectful manners.
We had a Veal Chop Caprese, phenomenal! and a Pacherri Amalfitani, which was excellent!! Homemade ravioli, excellent spice level, only thing I would have like a few more shrimp.
The Tiramisu was the best I have ever had.
After dinner we were fortunate enough to meet Tomaso himself, that was a great topper to an already wonderful evening.
Will definitely be back!
Husband and friends hadn't been there in a long time and this was my first visit. The food was great! The bread was not very crusty for Italian bread but the herb butter was nice. The room was a little loud for conversation but it was a Saturday, Dino was our server and we had ask 3 times for the wine list and twice for fresh pepper.
The locals say Tomaso's is the best Italian restaurant in the Phoenix metropolitan area and I agree. The menu offers a wide selection and the flavor is outstanding. The environment is classic "old school" supper club. That means it's a great spot for a quiet dinner whether it's casual, business, or a special occasion.
The lights were too bright. It actually needed to be dimmed down for dinner. It was too bright. The meal was very good. Had the lobster ravioli and the experience was better than I expected ,since the North Scottsdale location was a waste of money and not worth the value. The North location the food is fit for a nursing home. No taste and very bland. The atmosphere at the North Scottsdale location is bad. The window treatments are like walking into an old lady's house and the tables and chairs are not comfortable. There is not one booth. They have a chef's table in the middle of the restaurant. What a joke that is not private and it is a waste of space in the dining room. Noisy. Sports games playing in bar and since there is an open floor plan was not sure if I should have worn a shorts and a t-shirt or dressed up. The Biltmore location is far more superior in all aspects, food, service and atmosphere. I will return there even though is geographically far from home.
I love Tomaso’s for the creative dishes and their ability to go “off the menu” which only adds to the overall enjoyment of the dining experience. The staff is outstanding and professional. I always ask the waiters what they enjoy because each time they bring out an entre I’ve never had and a partial variation of something on the menu. The Oso Buco is the best I’ve had ANYWHERE! This is tasty authentic food, far and above what you come to expect from the boring franchise places. A bit pricey but well worth the cost.
What a wonderful old school authentic Italian restaurant! Filet Mignon Carpaccio, Antipasto by the person, and Calamari were excellent appetizers. Osso Buco, Chioppino and various pasta dishes were all enjoyed by the table. And big enough to take home lunch tomorrow! So glad to visit the area and visit this restaurant.
I've been wanting to try Tomasos for some time now. I shouldn't have waited so long! This is traditional Italian done right. The wine list features a nice selection of bottles and glasses. Our party of four loved our food and took home leftovers as portions are large.
Tomaso's is a great restaurant and Tommy is a great chef. The staff is excellent. We met high school friends from out of town that we haven't visited with for many years. The service was great but did not intrude on our conversation time. All four meals were remarkable and desert was delicious.
The restaurant accepted the reservation online, but was closed when we arrived. Would have been nice if the system had noted the restaurant was closed. Was rather embarrassing for a business dinner to show up to a closed restaurant. The restaurant has been good in the past, but I would call them rather than using online reservations. I would have given the restaurant a high score based on prior dinners there, but gave it a low score based on this experience where they were closed despite the reservation.
Our server was delightful and attentive without being intrusive. Starting out with the most delicious bread followed by wonderful entrees. The rack of lamb was succulent and pink just the way I like it. It had a nicely seasoned crust that was soooo good. My partner's dish consisted of a seafood medley with squid ink pasta that was a piece of heaven. Desert was the perfect ending. I can't say enough good things about this wonderful restaurant.
We can't wait to return.
I've dined here twice with my girl. The food is absolutely excellent. On both occasions I happened to be sitting next to or very close to very loud, drunken patrons that ruined the experience. I feel that the wait staff should handle obnoxious patrons by asking them to quiet down or leave, but they did not. I don't know if I'll ever return, even though I loved the food, service, and wine selection.
Tomaso's is just reliable and truly authentic Italian/Sicilian food. They accommodate in adjusting sauces if you prefer and can even create your own dish. Wine by the glass is a generous poor not a meager shortened measure and they are better than average choices. This trip Isi more of a drive than we used to have but worth it given the quality of the meal. The Amafitano with a variety of seafood and pasta was excellent. Alas, we were so full after salad and entree we passed on their great desserts. We are regular diners here so that should be a plus to those who haven't tried it. My wife's Dad came from Calabria at age 15 and her household was solid Italian from Dad, Mom, Grandmother so our 10 trips of multiple weeks throughout Italy keep us in touch with true Italian food. So, we make the drive from East Mesa to Phoenix for those really good dining experiences.
We had great expectations from Tomaso's, given the recommendation from friends. We chose to eat at the Camelback Rd location, and the evening started well - we were seated immediately, water and bread were served and drink orders were taken. From that point, not so good from a service perspective. After dinner orders were taken, salads were served quickly, and they were excellent. Main courses took quite a while to serve, which wasn't an issue because we were still enjoying our drinks. When finally served, my lamb rack was woefully undercooked (ordered medium rare; cooked just barely). Trying to get our server back was difficult because we didn't see him for at least 10 minutes, and we had to ask someone else to get him back to our table. When I told him about the discrepancy, he seemed put out and reluctantly took the plate back. When he returned with the food, my wife was almost finished with her meal, and she had to watch me eat. The food was perfectly cooked the second time, and I did enjoy the lamb. We also wanted to order more wine, but the server didn't return for at least 15 minutes and by that time we just wanted dessert and our check. The server's manner was brusque and any semblance of friendliness or concern for service on his part was gone.
Overall, we feel we would return to try it again. We would just request a different server, or perhaps we would try their other location in North Phoenix.
