Tomaso's - Phoenix Ratings and Reviews
I started with a delicious chopped salad. Unfortunately, I ordered the sea bass. What came was fish which I doubt was sea bass and was terrible. I sent it back and ordered an appetizer to replace it. They apologized but offered nothing - dessert, a drink or anything. The others in our party enjoyed their meals. I have eaten there in the past, but now I would not return.
Antipasta was great.
Fish in cioppino didnt seem fresh
Too much breading on shrimp
Service was slow and mediocre at best- nevr received a soft drink I ordered. Took forever to get water brought to table. Water was spacey-- didnt seem to know the menu
Atmosphere old school bordering on dated.
Fabulous food. Most authentic. If you're looking for Italy and can't do Europe go here! Staff has encyclopedic knowledge of food, wine & ingredients. No skimping on quality or portions. If you have a brain you would eat t.v. dinners & ramen noodles at home just for the privelidge of eating here 4 times a week.Little pricy but worth it,& more.Is for those hardcore foodies, that eat at real restaurants, appreciate impeccable service, food & wines, linen table cloths & napkins, and know what to do with more than 1 fork."Classy". Also for those who like places where there's no"jungle gyms" & kids who sit at their tables NOT yours!Only complaint no "enforced" dress code (people in jeans/too casual) small let down in that regards considering the place
We live quite a drive away from the restaurant, but had been given a gift certificate, so we made the drive.
I found being able to reserve on the website was very convenient and worked well. The hostess that greeted us was very pleasant and friendly and a nice table was waiting for us. We had a little trouble understanding the waiter because his Italian accent but he provided good service. Our food was delicious! We found the restaurant to be a little noisy, I think because of several children. The hour was early and, even though the restaurant is a little pricey, there were quite a few children. We enjoyed our experience at Tomaso's and will certainly return!
We recieved an e-mail from them indicating they were having a "Feast of the Fishes" for the holidays. So, we made a reservation for Christmas Eve. We've been there many times before. Giovani is one of the great waiters and he served us that night. The cocktails were great, the soup was wonderful and then came our entrees. My wife had Veal Parmasan which just ordinary and I had ordedred the Seared Sea Bass. When my entree arrived it did not appear very appetizing . When I took the first bite, it was cold and had a stayle taste like it had been sitting around all day...YUCK. I complained and they took it off the bill. I was very surprised because usually their food is very good. We won't be going back there anytime soon.
I went to Tomaso's a number of times. The menu is always changing and there are always specialties not on the menu.
I have always liked the food and the ambiance very much.
I have spent quite a bit of time in Italy and I have lived with Italians for a dozen years so I know what is the real good Italian food, either from a family or a restaurant perspective.
Tomaso's Is the best ever Italian restaurant I have found in Phoenix, it is like at home plus the restaurant service.
This is classic Italian dining without error. Pasta dishes are creative and delightful. The tiramisu dessert is as good as anything one could order in Milan. We enjoyed an Arizona Restaurant week prix fixe 3 course meal and fell in love with the burata appetizer platter that brought anti-pasto to a new level. We did have a curious stuffed squash blossom dish that was served as two items on an otherwise unadorned plate. The aesthetic effect was the equivalent of two hardboiled eggs on a large dish. But other than some work on presentation, the kitchen did not fail. Some remedial lessons in garnish might be worthwhile, though.
Attended special occasion for the "Best of California" Wine and Gourmet Dinner with a fixed menu and accompanying wine offering. The 1st course featured stuffed zucchini blossoms which were exquisitely light and fresh tasting. Along with those were gnocci in truffle sauce which completented the slighly-aaked chardonnay perfectly. The 2nd Course featured fresh pasta with a tomato pesto that all four of us ate in its entirety although we knew we would run out of room for the entree'. The fresh pasta and pecorino cheese provided richness while pesto sauce and roasted tomatoes were applied with a light hand. The veal chops were delectable and huge!CabSav was enjoyed by all. Ricotta Fritters followed and balanced well with the Moscato.Buonissimo!
Drink orders wrong more times that right. 3 out of 4 diners at our table said their food was marginal at best. For a $25 plate of pasta, it should have been the best we'd ever had! One at our table ordered a house salad, but was delivered a "specialty" salad. When I stated that there had been a mistake, I was told that WAS a house salad. $9 for a house salad? Nonsense. Sad to say that we won't be back. We were excited to try this restaurant and ended up deeply disappointed. It takes quite a lot for me to write a negative review but this experience needs to be shared.
Outstanding Italian fare, housemade gnocchi with eggplant timbale is just one of their outstanding dishes youn will not find in just any Italian restaurant. The servers are attentive, with the hostess assisting in our order taking to ensure we could be served before a large dinner party that required the attention of our waiter. In this instance, the accolades are well deserved. If you are in the area and enjoy Italian food, you should definitely dine here.
