Toma Restaurant & Bar Ratings and Reviews
We like Toma for special occasions as it’s a romantic place. First off, our server was excellent. Very attentive and efficient. It was the best service we’ve encountered there. In the past the servers were cocky. I’m glad Toma stepped up the game there. I ordered a Bellini which was wonderful and then French Champagne afterward which was ok. My husband ordered Chardonnays which he liked. We ordered The carpaccio and Beef Short Ribs. The carpaccio was good although minimal on the plate. It was presented beautifully as were the short ribs. I’m afraid to say that the short ribs were not up to par. My husband’s were tender but bland. Mine were tough and also bland. The sauce around the ribs was very good and made up for the lack of flavor on the short ribs. The potatoes were excellent as well. I have to say that we should have gone with the lasagna. But we had a nice time. I wouldn’t order the short ribs again unfortunately.
We visited Toma for a birthday celebration. Everyone enjoyed their choices. Our waiter was nice and attentive. I ordered the cod special but my daughters’ lamb and short rib choices had my attention. My husband enjoyed the lasagna. The tuna cones were pretty to look at but I think it would be best if the sesame seed cone was not sweet. I love Santa Barbara and I will definitely return to Toma. I was happy when they confirmed my online reservation with an actual phone call and made an effort to accommodate an online request.
We went here for a special occasion / anniversary. We have been a few times before and we really liked it, and decided to go for the sure thing instead of a new place, to make sure it would be special.
We love that they have a great European wine selection and have enjoyed the Nebbiolo, however my husband wasn't feeling great, so I had to find wine by the glass, which was quite a bit more limiting.
The service was OK. The server had a hard time hearing us, didn't seem too interested in helping us with the menu. Just minimally answered questions. We went with something we had not tried before, the root vegetables (tasted so, so. felt a bit overcooked, and not much flavor. chose them based on other reviewers and the waiters recommendation). Also had lamb. It looked fantastic,It was done how we asked, a very generous serving. Unfortunately it was practically flavorless. (We had been fortunate to have fantastic lamb in Carmel at our twentieth; and my husband's grill does a more flavored one, so this was less then we expected.)
The Ahi cones are a sure thing, we'll try them next time - and hope our experience this time was an anomaly.
Toma provides delicious food and drinks. The margatini is a fantastic margarita served up in a martini glass, and their own lemon drop is a close second.
Great wine selections go well with the incredibly tasty food. The octopus appetizer is cooked sous vide then grilled to perfection, while the ahi tuna cones are small cones made of white and black sesame seeds filled with fresh ahi.
The regular menu is filled with great options, including a rack of lamb, braised short rib, scallops, and an amazing lasagne and other pastas. They usually have at least one seafood and one meat special, too.
For dessert, don't miss the chocolate lava cake with strawberries and creme anglaise or the olive oil cake. Toma is now our favorite restaurant in Santa Barbara.
I first ate at Toma two years ago, and had been waiting to return to Santa Barbara with my husband so I could take him. The food has many classic Italian dishes, but also presents things with a creative turn while preserving the golden rule of making sure that you can actually taste the precise elements that make up the specific vegetable or...
It is a really good restaurant and we had a delicious meal, starting with crispy artichokes and a dish of root vegetables, moving through ravioli with ricotta and kale, and then on to lamb shank and a good, classic crème brule.
Nice wait staff, too. They make walking through a small but crowded room look easy.
The staff was wonderful, professional, friendly and attentive. The cocktails were great - best lemon drop I ever had. The roasted roots, an appetizer was unique and flavorful. That was my favorite part. We ordered the Bolognese. They grated fresh parmisan over it to our liking. It was delicious. Our waiter turned us on to the Italian wine, Nebbiolo, which was really a treat. It was a wonderful experience to top off our trip to Santa Barbara.
My family was in the restaurant business here in Santa Barbara, CA for over 25 years and always prided our selves for our food, how it was prepared and most of all making sure that our customers were very happy and satisfied when dinning at our restaurant. Tomas restaurant applies those same commitments in their restaurant.
Toma never disappoints! It is our "go to" for special occasions...wonderful food, excellent service and a lovely ambiance. Great cocktails - love the Tuscan Pear! We usually start with the calamari and the artichokes - yum! I usually order the fresh fish special, but this last time we were there, they didn't one on the menul. I ordered the ravioli and my husband had the Bolognese - both excellent! If you have room for dessert, the warm chocolate torte is heaven-save a sip or two of red wine to go with it!
Thank you, Toma, for always giving us a special evening!
My niece told me about this restaurant and i was finally able to book a table. We had reservations at 5 pm on a Saturday. We arrived and at 5 sharp we were seated at a small table that had a view for only one chair.
As soon as I sat down I saw a hair on the table cloth and than I looked down at my silverware and the fork was dirty it had food stuck to it. I waved a gentleman over and asked him if he could please bring me a clean fork, he was embarrassed and said “ this is not the way you want to start your dinner with us”. I replied “ no”.
I understand that it happens but I want to know why the person who sets the table missed that dirty fork?
It would also been nice if they offered me a drink or dessert .
Overall the food was great but I don’t think I will be driving one hour to go have dinner there anytime soon.
I had the lamb chops and ordered them Medium and they came Well done. No pink at all. I know it's a little weird to order lamb medium but it's how I like it. However I do not like well done lamb as all. I mentioned it to the waiter and he politely apologized. It's one of the most expensive things on the menu so I expect it to be close at least... It's their job to cook it to temp, right? My son had the Lasagna and neither of us thought it was very good. Sauce seemed unfinished or rushed or something. We did like the "Tuna Cones" for the appetizer, though.
This has to be the site of the world's best and most generous ciopino and I have lived in Italy. But there are also nice surprises like the tuna cone, very tender grilled octopus and wonderful carpaccio. It's a delight to find such variety and such quality under the same roof. The friendly but not unobtrusive service caps the experience. Outstanding!
