Toma Restaurant & Bar
Such friendly & professional service from the hostess, water boy, food runner to our waiter! Every dish was extra delicious, we really enjoyed the rare squash blossoms, perfectly seasoned lamb meatballs, flavorful lasagna, fresh clams black spaghetti & heavenly strawberry phyllo dessert. We also scored a cute table right by the window w/the beachfront view. Couldn't love Toma more!
The service was excellent. Asked to change tables because we were sitting under and AC register and they accommodated us immediately. The servers and bussers were very attentive and pleasant.
Consistently excellent food and service. Love Tom, the owner, too.
Small dining room with tables snugly placed, Food not bad for Santa Barbara. Wait staff impatient and forgetful. A little pricey. Conversations from nearby tables and the bar area very distracting.
Outstanding quality of good, service and ambiance. Definitely recommend!!
We had such a nice dinner here, beginning with the friendly welcome from the maitre d' and ending with amazing food prepared with care and beautifully presented. Great experience all around, will be back.
Excellent service, delicious starters(buratta tomato/stuffed squad blossoms), superb mains(lasagna/lamb rack--9)
Hadn’t been for a while and forgot how superb it was from food to service. Already thinking of my next return
Excellent bread and apps. Had the yellowtail carpaccio and calamari. Very tasty. The black spaghetti was just ok. Took a very long time between finishing apps and being served entree. Didn’t have cocktails. Iced tea was the worst I’ve ever had. $5 wasted.
The entire reason I picked this place was for the tuna cones and they were out of it. Very disappointing. it was our wedding anniversary. No offer of celebration or making up for being out of what drew us there in the first place.
Wished we would have stopped at the bread and appetizers.
But that carpaccio was so flavorful, I wished I’d have made a meal out of another plate of that instead of the spaghetti. Although for $21 you only get a couple bites.
Great food, busy but efficient. Fluke bad service just a poor waiter all other staff was superb
Great place and people.. love the food
Many people enjoyed this restaurant. It was very busy at 6pm. For me, it was just "okay." The tuna cones were terrific and the artichoke starter was good. There isn't lot of selection of anything that isn't crusted, fried, or can be good vegetarian fare. I ordered the rigatoni al dente and it was not. It was soft and rubbery. The pomodoro sauce was okay, but not outstanding. The problem for me is that this restaurant is packed in too tightly. We had nothing but waiter-butt in our faces all throughout the meal. If one more person (about 4) stopped (interrupted) us to ask how our meal was, I was going to scream. The hostess was lovely, the waiter was cordial (Colin) but I wouldn't return unless I was in a big party and could command s decent central part of the room. We were crammed in a corner by the door which was a thoroughfare similar to a freeway of food and beverage deliveries. As, as I previously mentioned, waiter-butt in our faces all night long, distracts from the enjoyment of dining. I took a friend for her 75th birthday and it was not the elegant dining experience I had anticipated.
We had a lovely dinner. Service was outstanding and the food was absolutely delicious. We would definitely go back again.
We loved our Toma experience! The entire staff was kind, thoughtful, personable and helpful in every way. We heartily recommend Toma!
The service and location were perfect. We were served with impeccable service in a nice corner table. Beautiful restaurant with a lovely decor. Albeit, the food was a classic Americanised butchering of Italian cuisine. The best thing about the food was the bread and butter. Almost every dish had 16+ ingredients almost as if the chef couldn’t decide if butter truffle, prawns, tomatoes and bacon was enough, had to add spinach and a dozen more ingredients to what was a mushy and flowery gnocchi dish. The fettuccine were overly salty, containing peas, bacon, cheese, spinach and smothered in cream. Incredibly rich, in a sickly way. Italian cuisine (coming from a national) should be left simple with few ingredients allowing them to shine. The wine menu included wines that were not representative of the region for which any dish tried ever so badly to emulate. Overall, if only the menu could be improved with local regional cuisine and few select but good ingredients this restaurant could shine as bright as how the interior designer had planned for it to.
We were so disappointed in the quality of the food. There were 4 of us and none of us loved our meal. In the past, Toma was one of our favorites. Unfortunately, we will not be returning to Toma.
Wonderful in every way!
The place was very noisy. It was crowded, and the tables were too close together. Mostly it was overpriced.
We had a reservation for later in the evening but our sail ended earlier so we stopped by to check if we could get in, and they were very nice to recommend a table in the bar. It was perfect and we were hungry. The appetizers of Burrata and tomato, and artichokes were a great start to very well prepared and presented main course. Service was attentive and pleasant, price was reasonable. Highly recommend.
The hostess and bus girl were great. Out server kept talking to other tables and seemed like he was not at all concerned about my partner and I. Pretty disappointed as we chose this restaurant for his bday dinner and came fro Dallas Texas. The hostess was very attentive and told him happy birthday twice. Very poor service from our waiter.
Loved Toma! Ahi Cones were delicious and the Ahi was beyond fresh. The Gnocchi was better than any I had during several visits to Italy. Husband had Black Spaghetti which was packed with perfectly done and abundant amounts of seafood. Lovey atmosphere and pretty interior. We will be back.
My Husband and I came to town for a concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl. We're pretty familiar with Santa Barbara in general. We wanted to find a new place for dinner. In our search Toma Restaurant popped up and the reviews looked good. And YES they were correct. The service was super friendly and helpful with the menu. My Husband ordered the special that night, a sea bass with risotto and shrimp dish and I had the slow cooked short ribs with whipped potatoes. Both were excellent. Short ribs are one of my go to comfort dishes and this one was the best I've had yet. The sauce it was in was deep with flavor. The Chef here doesn't just bust out the dishes, he creates them. Big difference. We will definitley go back next time we're in town.
Wonderful experience from start to finish.
My wife and I were on our last day of our honeymoon in the Santa Barbara area. We chose Toma based on reviews and were looking for a special dinner. I ordered the rack of lamb and it was a disaster. It is a large portion, 9 chops but it had no taste and was tough. The restaurant was very apologetic and did not charge me and comped us a desert, but this shouldn’t happen at a fine dining restaurant. My wife ordered the gnocchi and it was excellent but the lamb was not good and spoiled the evening.
Outstanding food and service. The meal was the most enjoyable we had in our recent visit. We definitely will be back.Bravo Toma!!!
We heard a lot of good things about this restaurant on other review sites. The atmosphere was great and the service was wonderful. But the food was kind of disappointing and doesn’t stand out at all, especially for the price.
My fiance and I had our anniversary dinner here. We had the best time. Both the food and service were outstanding. I am from out of town. Already can't wait to visit Santa Barbara again and go back to Toma.
Loved the service and the food..everything was excellent.
Great restaurant, the food was delicious, especially the gnocchi with shrimp and black truffle butter! Service was friendly! The ambient is tiny and cozy! Definitely worthy!
We arrived 30 minutes early for our reservation at Toma, and they readily offered to seat us early, but then seated two walk-ins before us. Not happy about this, but we jumped in to stop them from giving away our window seat, thankfully. The hostess stand is a 2x2 area at the front door. Very inconvenient for entering, exiting the restaurant and waiting for your table. You truly bothered all the tables around you in doing so. The food was good. Not spectacular. We had expected foodie levels, so we were disappointed. The server visited our table when it was convenient despite the restaurant being 2/3 full. Overall, ok. I don’t expect we’ll return.
Food and service were good but I would give a negative number for ambiance. The tables are too close together. You get to hear the conversations of the tables next to you whether you want to or not. Doesn’t seem to hurt their business though as the place was full. On a very positive note, the chocolate torte was outstanding and, as a chocoholic, I have had many. This was one of the best.
This was our first time to Toma and I’m glad I made reservations via Open Table. We were able to walk to Toma from our hotel and our table was waiting for us. We shared the grilled romaine salad which had a smoky tomato, lemon & garlic vinaigrette. For entrees, my husband had the ravioli and I got the special pan-seared seabass and we shared a half bottle of Chianti Classico. To celebrate our anniversary, we enjoyed the warm chocolate torte for dessert. The food was divine and the service was superb. We definitely will be back whenever we visit Santa Barbara again.
We enjoyed the dinner so much the first night, we went back the next night, sat at the bar and had a glass of wine and dessert.
Wonderfully delicious restaurant! Reserved a table for our anniversary and the view was great! Food was outstanding as was our waiter. We plan on visiting again the next time we’re in town. Thank you for a wonderful evening!
Toma is a real Santa Barbara treasure. The location across from the Ocean is beautiful. The service is ultra professional...they are proud to be working at Toma. The wine selection is beautifully curated. The food...I wish I could order everything on the menu. I dream of Toma's food. The sound in the restaurant is muted and very relaxing.
Amazing food, both our special of the day halibut and the scallops were perfect. Great server and just a beautiful restaurant. We’ll be back
The food is fabulous and the ambiance is great.
Really delicious food!
Food is always amazing there! It was jam packed with people.
Booked days ahead and had to wait 30 minutes for our “reserved” seating. No apology or reparation just defensiveness. Food was slightly better than average. I’ll look for other dining spots the next time I visit Santa Barbara.
