It was dead when we went, but regardless the food was spectacular but a bit pricey
We went to TJ's for their Mother's Day brunch and it was terrific. Large variety of breakfast and lunch items - made to order omelet's, prime rib, eggs Benedict, paella, and much more plus a mind boggling desert and cheese bar. The service was great. all in all made it a great Mother's Day.
We were once again very pleased with the food at TJ's ..the Mother's Day buffet included an extensive array of breakfast foods, made to order omelets, fruit, cheeses, beef, pork, chicken, seafood, salads and desserts. Presentation was beautiful .. and everything was delicious. The six of us really enjoyed the multitude of choices. The room in which were seated was large and lacked windows and was therefore lacking ambience...but we did not ask in advance to be seated in the main room, which has all the windows! All staff were pleasant, helpful and anxious to be accommodating. The long stemmed red roses presented to moms was a very nice touch. Well done!
In the past my family and I have throughly enjoyed TJ'S Tavern however our last visit we were very disappointed in the service. The staff was disorganized and we're not attentive to their tables. It took several intervals for us to obtain he correct drink orders. Then replenishing water and coffee was non-existent. Lastly , the wait staff commenting to each other on the patrons was tacky and unacceptable.
Generous selection of breakfast foods and classic Easter ham and side dishes - the quinoa pomegranate salad was refreshing before finishing with a great desert selection- the Easter cupcakes had a homemade feel to them and staff member's young son dressed up as the Easter
bunny, visiting tables dispensing goodies and a smile - all for a very family friendly and gracious
Sunday brunch.
Food was delicious and priced well. The atmosphere was nice and the volume was low. My only complaint is that the servers, though very friendly, consistently took a LONG time to refill drink glasses -- both at mine and neighboring tables.
Meant to make a reservation for brunch but ended up sitting down for the breakfast buffet. Good hotel food and good service!
The seared scallops were fantastic!
The food (once it arrived) was actually very good. A ribeye, crab Mac n cheese and the cheese platter were all delicious. The service left a lot to be desired. Probably won't become a regular spot.
It was nice to find such a nice place open on Christmas Eve. The bbq chicken skewers were tasty with the white glaze. Nice beer and wine selection too.
Decided to take the family , parents, aunts, uncles and cousins out for Thanksgiving so we could all be together and for once no one would have to cook and clean.
I don't think I could have found anything better. The food and service was very good, the staff was very accommodating and pleasant. We will be back next year.
In general terms, I am not a big fan of buffets for while the quantity of available food is typically very good, it is also typical that the food is average at best. TJ’s was on point in this regard. I thought the cost was a bit high as well. While on a certain level your options for restaraunts might be limited on Thanksgiving, I think you should at least expect an eating experience that is above average. TJ’s at least on this occasion, did not meet my minimal expectations.
My son and I went for the Thanksgiving buffet. This had been a tradition for the past few years because my husband didn't want me cooking both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. I love leftovers, so it was hard to give that up! This was the first year without my husband with us. He passed away on April 2 of this year and he was very much missed. My son and I had a great time however and enjoyed the wonderful food and holiday atmosphere.
My family and I go to eat out on regular basis, and it was so refreshing and wonderful to have our Thanksgiving dinner with you all. Everyone at the buffet was kind and polite. We asked for honey, for my daughter's tea, and for oil and vinegar for my salad, that weren't on the buffet; both requests were received with a smile and willingness to help us enjoy our overall experience there. Trust me, we don't see that very often, no matter the cost of the buffet you may be paying! We left your restaurant talking about finding a date when we all could come back to eat there again!
PS - My husband loved your Prime Rib and I loved your little crab cakes w/shrimp!
Servers were very friendly and somewhat prompt considering the crowd on Thanksgiving. One lady was bussing our table, however, and actually rested her tray on my baby's head. Seriously. The food was all good but we would have liked to see some macaroni and cheese and green bean casserole. Also, the guy carving the turkey was TERRIBLE at it!!! Our first go-round he gave us each giant, thick slabs of turkey. Way too big!!! The second time around he had a pile of gross-looking turkey shards he was trying to serve. I asked for a fresh slice and he was a little rude about it. Also, most of the buffet utensils were difficult to use. I saw a lot of people struggling to grab the green beans with the tongs and I saw many people having issues slicing the cheeses and getting their desserts because there was no place to set your plate and the serving utensils and serving plates created a two-handed situation. We really did enjoy ourselves though! We are just all in the service industry so we do pay attention to lots of details! ;)
Thank you though for providing an overall very good, fun experience for my family on Thanksgiving!
The only issue was that the waiter took a long time to come around to take our order, and we finally had to ask another waiter/waitress to do so. I suppose there was some party going on somewhere else even though the restaurant was almost empty. The food was nice.
We arrived a bit early in the dinner hour, 5 PM and found n one seating customers. That was the worst part of this whole experience. The service was excellent, no waiting, but then we were the only ones there. The menus were electronic and heavy. The options were very surreal. I had the salmon and shrimp. Both were done to perfection with the salmon done so well, I was tempted to order an a la carte to go. My hat is off to the chef on that. The dessert was excellent, Creme Brulee topped with slices of nectarine and whipped cream. The nectarine was not as ripe as I like, but it was good just the same. Would I return? Very definitely. As soon as I can afford it. Definitely a special occasion choice.
The food and service was good. There was a miss understanding with our reservation that caused some initial problems. I called several days in advance to reserve a table. The date was May 16th - UVA graduation weekend. I ask for a table between 9-11 and was given 11 am. When I showed up with out-of-town visitors we were told the brunch buffet ended at 11. I told the servers present that the person who took our reservation told us that the brunch went passed 11. There were at least two other table of folks that came in at 11 and we told the same thing. We were finally able to order off the breakfast menu and everything was OK. I highly suggest you make sure in the future the person giving reservations and the cook/servers are in sync on meal times. I live in Forest Lakes and work at DIA and routinely take folks to TJs for meals. Thanks.
Our group was very happy with our Easter Brunch experience at TJ's. The food was wonderful. A really great selection of dishes from starters to desserts. Will definitely be returning for another special occasion.
T J' s made our Thanksgiving a wonderful family event. The food was excellent and the service was very attentive and friendly. I would recommend to anyone visiting or locally....
Each meal was presented with special and memorable care. While ingredients left something to be desired, service was comfortable and made up for any short comings. Need to try other entre` for complete review.
The food was average at best. Dinner selection was lacking. The service was much better than the food. I would only recommend TJ's for people staying at the Double Tree who did not want to go out for dinner or breakfast and wanted the convenience of eating at the Double Tree.
We made reservations for two to a restaurant that did not have any other customers. Restaurant was completely empty besides us. 2 people were at the bar area and their food was delivered to us instead of the food we ordered!!! Wow!!!! It took forever to get our main meal. Total bill was $85. I could have had a huge dinner somewhere else for that cost, but I guess having the entire restaurant to ourselves was cool. But why were reservations required for a place so unpopular????
This was our third Mother's Special Bunch. The people where great, food was good but was not as happy as we had been with in the past with the menu or the price. I booked on-line for Mothers Bunch Special and I was surprised when I got my bill. The reservation was for four people, was expecting to pay $38.00 per person and the bill came to $50.00 a person. We preferred TJ’s over other locations because the food is just as good as any other five star restaurants with Mother’s Day specials and historically we liked the menu better. Also; I felt they TJ’s gave you a better value for the money until this visit. Not sure if we well go back again.
We had come there for Mothers Day.This was our first time here. We had heard and read some reviews and feel some were justified. Negative reviews were food being too salty and or cold. We found this to be true unfortunately in some of the areas. To our disappointment we found that they did not even take their store bought desserts out of the cheap aluminum pans they were in and plate them nicely. It was disappointing to see that they could not even make a dessert other than a mouse. Nice atmosphere but poor food .. its a shame
The Chef working the Omelet Station took pride in his cooking, doing an excellent job with what the customers created. Plate Presentation was excellent.
The brunch started at 1130 and we were only able to get reservations for 130. I believe for forty bucks each guest should feel like the good just came out. However other than the roast beef and jam the food was dry, cold and picked over. There were not enough serving utensils and the waitress barely came to check on us to remove plates. I did not get a great value for what I paid I felt taken advantage of.
The food and our waitress were good, but it was hard to get over the way the hostess treated us. We had reservations and there was no one around to seat us. We went to the back and there was a table or two of people seated. We found the hostess and she took us back to the bar to sit despite us having reservations. Then she only gave us two menus for four people. When I asked her for additional menus, she said that there was a large group in the back that needed them and acted like I was asking for too much. It is a shame that she ruined our impression of the restaurant because the food was good.
Not your "hot date" destination, but a good local choice. TJ's islocated in a DoubleTree that has a bizarre location - just past a Sam's Club. However, the hotel is DoubleTree quality, as is the restaurant. The bar is "pub'ish " though somewhat public. The restaurant decor is unexciting and lacking in ambiance, but it overlooks the Rivanna River and the views in spring are lovely. The menu is adequately varied - something for everyone (as one would expect in a hotel), but the food is consistenly quite good and the service is always friendly. We have dined in both the bar and the restaruant on several occasions and would recommend either for solid reliable dining, pleasant service, and a great people-watching opportunity.
Despite advanced reservations, we were seated at a high-top in the bar. The waitress was pleasant but overwhelmed. We had to flag her down twice. (She told us they were slammed with 300+ reservations on Christmas Day since there were only two places open in town.) We ordered the standard Christmas turkey dinner. The turkey and roasted vegetables were tasty, but the stuffing was from a box, the mashed potatoes were bland, the gravy was unremarkable and scant (barely covering only the turkey). The red and white wines were minimally acceptable. (The red was served warmer than room temperature and the white was very acidic.) The apple pie was store bought. The ice cream was the best offering of the night.
We had 2:30 reservations on Christmas Day and were seated right away. Service started out quite slow as staff seemed unprepared for the days' crowd, both at the bar and the restaurant. Food was good and things worked out fine. Pleasant lunch and would recommend again from the the few choices available for a meal out on Christmas Day.
Going to eat here was a Christmas gift. Enjoyed everything about the experience of dining here. Loved it
Food was only warm, too salty, small portions. Service was very good, along with the atmosphere.
When you have to eat out for Thanksgiving, the options are few. The Doubletree retaurant (TJ's Tavern) was the perfect choice: a beautiful hotel, friendly staff, and plenty of delicious victuals in the huge buffet.
This was a last minute reservation to have Thanksgiving lunch with a family member. I was expecting a pleasant
lunch, but was pleasantly surprised by the quality, abundance & selection of food choices. We were seated
in the dining room behind the bar area w/ big windows looking over the back of the wooded property - the
autumn view was complimented by gold table cloths & napkins creating a festive holiday ambiance.
We went later in the day, and the turkey was moist and just roasted - quite an accomplishment feeding a few hundred
hungry locals. The servers were friendly and the buffet tables were refreshed frequently during our time there.
We also both commented on the great crab cakes - more crab that crumbs....we loved them!
This was the first time my wife and I went out for a Holiday dinner, It was a great experience for both of us, im glad we luckaly fell into TJ Tavern it was lots of fun and we are already looking forward to our next visit.
Always enjoy stopping by for lunch when I'm in Charlottesville. Even drive out to have dinner on occasion. Food is fantastic. It's the best kept secret around.
Food was excellant and staff was great. THis is the second time I have been to TJ Taverns - it was been great both times
Enjoyed the Mother's Day Brunch with a fairly large family. There was plenty of food choices, and most were very good! One problem was the wait staff (or lack thereof). Once seated, no one directed us to the food areas, or took our drink order. We assumed we were supposed to visit the drink station ourselves. Once we realized there was a waitress, it still took a member of our group three requests to get a glass of water. Obviously, there was a problem with having enough staff on a holiday.
We had a nice Mothers' Day brunch at TJ's Tavern. Very good food.
