Tir na nOg Irish Bar & Grill - MSG Ratings and Reviews
Went here because it came up in my Google search for restaurants near Madison Square Garden. I am so glad we went there. This place is very lucky to be located where it is, and I'm glad that it lived up to the good reviews.
I love Irish pubs and I probably wouldn't recommend this to someone looking for an authentic Irish atmostphere, as you would never know it was Irish by the surroundings. However, its authenticity was in the waiter/waitress and bartender, as well as the menu options. I didn't find it to be terribly noisy like some of the reviews talked about, but I would definitely throw in some occasional Irish music - it doesn't have to be the old-fashioned traditional songs but some modern Irish would be appropriate and possibly enough to keep most people satisfied if that's what they're looking for.
Food was wonderful - service was perfect and friendly and I did enjoy the atmosphere. If I go back to that area, I will definitely return.
Tir na nOg is always a solid, reliable go-to choice for good food, good service, good atmosphere, great pub. Perfect location next to MSG, subway and LIRR makes it a really convenient place to meet for lunch, dinner or just drinks. Good for groups. And they have the best host in town!
We were a party of 6. 2 of the 6 meals came out of the kitchen wrong. Told us it would take a while for the correct dish to come out. 45 minutes later, as we were getting ready to leave, the other 2 meals arrived, 1 was still wrong. Told us we had been put at back of line in the kitchen even though they screwed up order. The good thing is they comped the meal but 2 of us went hungry.
Came here on the recommendation of a friend and was not disappointed. We had tickets for Billy Joel at MSG and this place was perfect. We were seated promptly, and service was very efficient. Food was good and the choices were very good. While the menu isn't extensive, it is varied which allowed for a good selection. Finally it was just a quick walk across the street to the back entrance of the Garden which is never crowded. My only complaint is the noise level, it is VERY loud. Not easy to have a conversation but there is little to be done with the floor plan.
My party of 5 had dinner here before a Billy Joel concert at MSG. We picked it for the location, but came away wanting to go back even without a concert! The service, food, and atmosphere were great. We plan to return someday just to watch a game in the large downstairs sports bar. Great find!
The barservicer was distracted and did not get my drink order correct then but I got over that. We moved to our table and the waitress Sally was great! The small plates were pretty good we got the calamari, flatbread pizza, meat balls and a cease salad. The food was tasty not awesome it came out fast which was good. A great location to enter MSG it's the least crowded entrance.
We came here before a concert at MSG and were seated immediately. We were greeted by our server right away with menus and bottled water. We each ordered a beverage, an appetizer and entree. Our server was very attentive to our order and everything came out timely. She checked back at just the right times to see if we needed any refills. My husband had the pork chop and I had the short ribs. Both were delicious!! We would definitely come back here again! Tip: make a reservation.
Had a reservation but they initially wanted us to sit at a rectangle bar table for 6 that had 4 people already eating together. Asked for another seat, since we did reserve and was told that it didn't specify stand alone table on our Open Table reservation. They got the manager and after a few more people were seated we were taken upstairs where there were plenty of empty tables for 2. At first we were put at a table in front of blower and it was freezing so we asked if we could move over to one of the empty tables. They had to ask the manager who did come up and apologize for everything, agreed it was freezing there, and moved us to a table by the wall, which was fine. I was impressed by the manager talking to us and apologizing and first round of drinks on him, which was totally unexpected. Nice goes a long way.
Food was fine, fish and chips are always good pub food, but the NY strip steak was just okay, but we did know were were at a pub, not a steakhouse. Good selection of beer, of course. While it was a nice pub to stop in for a drink and burger, it was very loud and we weren't able to just sit and talk.
Location was great since we were staying in Chelsea and going to a concert at MSG, service was good too.
The funniest part was the next day Open Table sent us a note that we didn't show for dinner, which was cleared up through my email. My suggestion to anyone making a reservation here is to request a stand alone table and be prepared for a very loud restaurant.
It wasn't obvious where the host was for table seating. We had to ask the bartender for a table. Also, when we asked for a drink menu to see their collection of whiskeys we were told they didn't have one. Otherwise, the food was fine. It's pretty noisy for dinner but overall not bad. I much prefer the old location though.
Overall, the experiance was good. This is a nice, clean, updated Irish bar across from Penn Station and MSG. The service was good the food was mixed. We had the fish and chips and Shepard's pie. Fish and chips were very good, while the pie was ok, not the worst or the best.
It you are looking for a more upscale Irish bar this is still the one to go to.
Very good food! But for an Irish pub, what's up with the mashed potatoes? They were so soft and lump free that I think they were instant- possibly overly processed, so I'll give the benefit of the doubt.
Service was excellent and accommodating- our server didn't forget anything, including stopping by to check up. Way above par!
Ambiance: our table was a bit too close to the bar, especially since there were available tables in the back. We felt closed in and actually got grazed by backpacks and customers rushing by our table without being mindful.
Drink prices were moderate.
Noise level way too loud- no need to be in competition with MSG. I want my meal in a MUCH quieter environment; considering that I'm headed to a show for at least three hours of live music, I'd like to converse with friends and family without shouting. Please turn the music down.
Glad you are close by. Nice and friendly staff in every way.
Excellent choice for casual yet tasty dining before or after MSG event. Our meals of fish and chips and sauteed bronzino were excellent. Limited but good selection of wines by glass and very good martinis. Service was professional and attentive. Overall thought it was an excellent value for quality of the food and service. The only drawback for us was that it's very loud - however if that isn't a drawback for you highly recommend.
I have been to the Tri Na Nog in Philadephia. The one in NY is exactly the same - good food. Service wasn't very good. I had to get up from my booth and ask the bartender to find our waitress. Good thing we didn't want another drink or anything else other than the check. My tip reflected her lack of service.
I was a visitor from Phoenix passing through New York; had a brief opportunity between trains to visit with a friend; it was a perfect spot! Super friendly waitstaff, lovely generous portions, food was served hot and quickly. And Open table relieved any stress about being able to be seated and eat in our allotted time. Awesome experience!
As I mentioned to our server, I have been a big fan of Tir na nOg for many years, starting at their original location at 32 &8th. Really enjoy both of their current locations. Love the fact that the staff is always friendly and helpful, food is consistently good, regardless of what you order. Never disappoints.
This is a solid and reliable spot--big enough for groups, service is good, and food is straightforward and solid. Tir Na Nog definitely stands out as one of the better options in CraPennSta. The food is over-priced, even for NYC standards, for what you get, which is the only reason why I didn't give 4 stars. I will still return.
This Penn Station location has less ambiance than the 39th street TirNaNog but is convenient and pleasant enough. The problem we had was 2 tables were put together in a spot better suited for one and so the people next to us were very close so all conversations ( theirs and ours) were overheard and uncomfortable. AT previous Penn Station location on 8th the servers were very nice and gave you time to mull over your choices for lunch and plenty of time to talk and relax-- not so on this visit. Server made us feel rushed even though there were plenty of tables open . Sadly not as lovely an experience as previous visits were.
