Tierra Sur Restaurant, inside Herzog Wine Cellars new state-of-the-art winery, is a New American seasonal cuisine.

With Tierra Sur, Gabe Garcia's cooking is rustic, unpretentious and ingredient driven utilizing local farmers when ever available. Menu items such as aged rib-eye steak and wild salmon are cooked outdoors over an open flame. The menu also includes house-made organic corn tortillas with exotic fillings such as birria (chili-braised lamb) with salsa cruda and grilled achiote-marinated red snapper with tomatillo salsa. A high point of the menu is the prix fixe wine tasters meal with wine pairings for each course.

Lamb was delicious but very expensive. Steak and accompanying vegetables were burnt and also expensive. Drove up from San diego to celebrate our anniversary and left very disappointed.

This was the first time our family's been there when none of us had steaks, which are always terrific. We weren't disappointed - the dill-brined fried chicken was excellent, as was the roast lamb. The three-part appetizer of chicken liver terrine, veal pate, and compressed melon wrapped with lamb "prosciutto" was enough for three people - and one of the best we've ever had there. The three-way chocolate dessert was a real treat. All these were new additions since the last time we were there, about five months ago. The wines are, of course, produced at the winery or imported from Herzog's European wineries, with plenty of varietals and a wide price range.

The tasting room was slammed with a crowd, which was sucking down the tapas early Sunday evening, so we missed out on most of them, but the chicken skewers were very nice, as were the sweet potato fries. The wagyu sliders are juicy and tasty. We really enjoyed the 2016 HWC Clarksburg Single Vineyard Chenin Blanc/Viogner.

The tasting room/tapas bar can get pretty busy and loud; the restaurant tends to be very quiet. Service is excellent - attentive without being overbearing.

Highly recommended!

Food. Delicious and fresh.
Disappointed no lamb bacon. One of reasons I order burger. Little more selection would be nice.
Server was very friendly. Almost too solicitous.
Wine was great and they accommodated our request.

Fine dining it is not. Putting white table cloths on a table and having the waiter put their hands behind there back while serving does not make it fine dining. The wine was great but the food was just ok and overpriced for what it was.

The food is excellent and so is the service. And it's fun to have the wine straight from the winery (although the grapes are grown elsewhere). Servings are generous. The bread was not amazing, but good. My husband and I drove up from west Los Angeles for a special afternoon and it was well worth the drive and expense. The food was a mixture of gourmet interesting and classic just good.

The drive there was beautiful, the ambience-perfect, and the service was lengthy, but good. However the highly recommended as a favorite, brisket sandwich, was tough and full of fat which had to be spit out. Sadly, two of us ordered it. My son's steak was wonderful, as was the hamburger. Sorry, but if I had to give a number on this time at the Winery, it would be a 5 out of 10. We wished we'd sent back my brisket sandwich and ordered the luscious hamburger instead. I'd certainly go there again.

This was my first time eating in the main dining room and it was as good as I thought it would be. We both ordered mushroom soup for the appetizer and it was very good -- most mushroom soups are heavy on the cream, but this one was just right. The ribeye was fantastic. I ordered the 16 oz and had it in my lunch salad for 2 days following!
But...that being said, don't think I'll be going back too often. We live in Ojai and there are a few places in my neighborhood that are just as good -- and cost a little less. I found it to be overpriced. Our bill was around $300 for soup, sharing a dinner salad, entree, bottle of wine (and a moderate wine) and dessert.
It is located in an industrial area in Oxnard.

Still the best restaurant in Ventura County for both food and proper service. Waiters know exactly what is in they are serving you. Locally sourced, highest quality ingredients makes it our favorite restaurant to enjoy.

I gave a 3 in overall because they was only one server and an assistant.
She couldn’t cover the 10 tables and I needed to wait for many things

This is the best restaurant Kosher restaurant on the West Coast, but you would never know that it was a kosher establishment. The food is creative, local and fabulous. The price is very fair considering the ingredients used. It is especially nice to go to a wine tasting before the meal. I come here every time I come to California.

$250 for a tomahawk steak--talk about a scalping. Oh, wait, it's kosher. That explains it. If it's kosher, the premium is established by a few millenia of following Hachem's dietary laws and culinary restrictions. They may not make sense from a human perspective, but as more than one rabbi has noted, it's not about (human) logic--it's simply because G-d said so. But nowhere does He say to charge two arms, a leg, an eye and a tooth. On the other hand, I don't feel any bit holier than thou, so it must be working.

The restaurant is located in wine processing plant which produces wine from local grapegrowers, none of whom are named Herzog or are related to the founder of the restaurant, originally from New York. Which reminds me of another Herzog, the character imagined by the great Jewish-American writer, Saul Bellow (whom no one reads anymore).

My dining companion was a beautiful Tunisian, who happened to be converting to Judaism. Not just any form of Judaism--the orthodox kind, the sect that frowns on Jews "mingling" with goys. So, here we are, 60 miles from home, nowhere near Pico/Robertson, the Jewish epicenter of Los Angeles, and she faces the wall. Can't risk being seen with a goy. I mean, statistically, what are the chances. We're in Oxnard, for goodness' sake. What was it Herzog, Bellow's character, said? "Live or die, but don't poison everything.”

The wine was so-so. The ambience was cool. The staff attentive and eager-to-please.

My husband and I dined at Tierra Sur for our birthdays (three days apart). This was our first experience at this lovely restaurant. Everything was perfect. Our waiter, Jacob, was polite, knowledgeable, attentive, but not intrusive. The food was delicious.So was the recommended wine, of course product of the Herzog Winery. The location is a bit odd (in an industrial neighborhood, due to the fact that the restaurant is in the winery building), but once you are in, it is very beautiful. I already returned for a lunch two days later, and this will be our new gourmet dining go-to in Ventura County. Compliments to the restaurant management for great staff!

Tierra Sur is probably one of the finest kosher restaurants in Southern California aside from the fact it is in an industrial park. The wine bar area has been expanded and serves light bites. We hadn't been there in over a year and were a bit disappointed with the limited restaurant menu. Everything we ate was good but there were no light entrees. All menu items very rich in flavor/sauces. The prices also seemed much higher than previously averaging $125/person with one bottle of wine for 4. Wine selection was outstanding and new selections were offered that had not been distributed to stores as yet.

The dishes are quite creative, and that's already enough for us to want to go back. The service staff was impressive, and that definitely makes us want to go back. Excellent vegan options. All food is prepared in a Kosher kitchen.

We visited Tierra Sur to celebrate a birthday and they did not disappoint. We started with Platillos of hummus, chile rellenos and spaghetti squash. I would repeat the hummus and chile rellenos. I had the special featuring Mahi Mahi tacos. I could only eat two of the three following the Platillos but my husband managed to eat his three and my left over one. They were delicious. This is a Kosher dairy free fine dining restaurant so when my son ordered a burger he was a bit surprised that they could provide the bacon but not the cheese. He said it was great just the same. Our attentive, polite server Johnathan surprised us with the wonderful presentation of a table side flaming Baked Alaska. Again, no dairy but over the top delicious. I am not a wine expert but my Pinot Grigio from Herzog was buttery and fruity and I hope to return and purchase a bottle. Only con was the day was windy and the smoke from the outdoor grill seemed to find me whenever the patio door was opened. But this was not enough to take away from our dining experience. Thank you, Tierra Sur. We will return.

I love Terra Sur however i did not have a good experience this time. I was there for an aniversary dinner which the staff knew via open table. Staff did not acknowledge us. I ordered the Uraguyan rib eye the steak was delicious however i could only consume half of it. Half of it I had to spit out which was embarrassing. I asked the waiter was normal me knowing full well ot wasn't. The waiter said yes tit eas normal but nobody else around us was spitting out chunks of fat. They should have offered and perhaps i should have insisted they take the steak back. I do recommend Terra Sur but they dropped the ball on this occasion

We were especially impressed with our waitress whose warmth and caring was very obvious: explaining menu clearly, personal touch, even taking pictures in and out!

Steak (16oz CAB ribeye) outstanding. Sunchoke soup very good.

My only negative comment is that the salmon portion was so tiny it was embarrasing. My friends are not red meat eaters so they ordered the salmon. The portion was so small it was embarassing. Also the salmon’s sides, if there were to be any, were invisible.
