About Tiella

Tiella serves modern Southern Italian cuisine. Its inventive and sophisticated menu is inspired by and elevates the home-cooked meals and peasant culinary traditions owners Giuseppe Castellano and Mario Coppola were raised with in Naples, Italy. Indeed, Tiella takes its name from the Neopolitan word for a cast-iron pan that is used for baking, grilling or frying meats, fish and breads. Our signature tiellas are pizza-like appetizers baked in our wood-fired oven.

Our philosophy is that the greatest meals require the finest ingredients. We import mozzarella di bufala, stracciatella and other fine cheeses, as well as risotto and prosciutto from Italy. Many other ingredients are sourced from local producers and farmers. To ensure that we serve the very best bread and pasta, we make our own.

The extensive wine list is comprised of Italian makers and complements the menu.

The quality of the food was absolutely delicious. We order burrata, crab cake, and a small pizza with shaved truffle on top. The ambiance had a quiet, romantic vibe with great music. Our server, Paula, was very attentive and we enjoyed having her. I would highly recommend this place.

Went to Tiella with a friend and was very pleased. Salads were very fresh and tasty. Our main courses were excellent. We both had the fish special. I would definitely go back if I have a chance.

Nice appetizers and desserts. VERY disappointing pasta. Tasted like sauce from a jar mixed with a few limp vegetables.

This restaurant was a pleasant surprise. We were served by Mario, the owner, who was very nice and professional. Prices were moderate. My arugala salad was delicious. My husband tried the pizza and loved it, and we both had pasta for an entrée. I was surprised this tiny, hole in the wall restaurant, has been around for 8 years and I never tried it. It's gets a pretty high rating on Zagats.

This is one of those nice little restaurants with good food and a nice ambiance that you occasionally stumble upon. It's small and narrow, but comfortable and quiet. I'd call it upscale comfortable. The food was good, but not memorable - except for the Gallette (chickpea fritters with prosciutto, stracciatella cheese and figs), which was amazing. Overall, you won't go wrong if you just want a nice, quiet dinner with interesting menu items.

We love this place. The tiellas are such a treat, and the staff cheerfully divides then to share. It's impossible to pick a favorite -- they are all so good. The room is warm and cozy and inviting. The staff is friendly and accommodating. It's a neighborhood treasure.

Tiella's is a small restaurant om First Ave. that had been recommended to us by a friend. Our first meal there was terrific. The restaurant was uncrowded and the owner took our orders and also suggested wines from the region he grew up in. The food was very good and while this is not a"white table" dining experience the ingredients are fresh and the dished they prepare reflect that fact. The second time was a little less impressive. It was more crowded and the food suffered somewhat we thought. For those reading this we think it's worth the visit. Our first meal was memorable and restaurants sometimes tumble when very crowded. We will be back in a month or so to make the judgement about which restaurant Tiella's is-a very good one with very good value or a restaurant that can be "hit or miss". By the way lunch there proved to be quite nice and a good value!

I highly recommend this restaurant. I have eaten there a number of times and the food is always delicious. Pasta dishes are very good as are fish dishes. The 3 course lunch menu is fabulous. They have nice wine by the glass as well as reasonably priced bottles. The waitstaff is efficient, knowledgeable, and friendly. Try this place.

Tiella is a hole-in-the-wall neighborhood Italian place with warm service, delicious food and a lovely atmosphere. Chef Giuseppe makes memorable homemade pastas -- Garganelli w/shrimp, scallops, fava beans and black garlic was delicious! I'm sad I didn't find out about this place sooner. Better value and quality than other Italian restaurants in the neighborhood. Highly recommend!

Tiella is our go-to place when looking for good food after theater or with out of town friends or whenever. The Tiellas (little pizzas) are great for a small bite. The ala carte menu is carefully prepared and head and shoulders above similar places. Although the food is described as Neopolitan, it is not "red sauce" Italian but rather unique. I recommend it highly.

A neighborhood gem. Great food and good service for how tiny this restaurant is. It could get a bit too noisy at times. Because the space is small you cal feel a. It cramped depending where you sit.

Mediocre food, at best, and not cheap. Waiter was completely indifferent about our meal and looked quite perturbed that we we even deigned to be served. Never inquired about our satisfaction not to speak of refilling water glasses. We could've understand all the positive reviews for this place as we were utterly underwhelmed. We will never return and recommend you leave this place off your visit list.

The food here is delicious and there's a nice reasonable wine list. Last time I was there the service was spotty and slow but everyone is so nice that I won't hold a grudge. Maybe someone was out sick or on vacation.
