We always try to work in a dinner at the Tidewater when in town, due to its great seafood. This time we would have enjoyed it more had our table not been next to the kitchen area, which was noisy and high traffic. Servers seemed to be over-extended with tables. We'll give it another try next visit to Charleston.
I've always had excellent service and food at Tidewater. Had a lifelong friend visiting from California and wanted her to enjoy the atmosphere and food. The staff and General Manager David Andrews were very accommodating to our group of 9 ladies! Will definitely be coming back to Tidewater!!
They should have some vegetarian appetizer options. Overall food was great but a bit pricey for lunch. They only offer dinner on weekends and this is not clear on the website.
A great plus is having reservations and using Open Table! Hardly anyone in town does this!
We used to eat at Tidewater often, but a few years ago, I ordered Parmesan encrusted sole and was served a thick white fish. I questioned our server and was told the new chef filleted the fish differently. I was sure that was wrong and later confirmed what I knew with the local fish shop that filet of sole is always a thin fish. We stopped going to Tidewater because of this incident, however decided to give it another try with some out of town guests last night. Again, I ordered the sole, but explained to our server exactly what had happened before and asked that if the fish wasn't really sole, to please bring me back the menu. When she brought the fish, she told me the chef assured her it was sole; it was not. Again, Tidewater tried to pass off a cheap thick white fish as the much more expensive sole. I called her back over, asked her to take it away, as it was definitely not sole. She was very apologetic, and I have no complaints with her. A chef came out a few minutes later with a new plate that had the right fish on it this time. He told me I had a good eye and that the original fish was orange roughy. While I appreciate their correcting their mistake, the fact that this happened twice, several years apart, is disturbing. I know it's common to try to pass off a cheaper fish as the more expensive one, but it should not have happened, especially with my very specific request beforehand. While we have had good times here in the past, Tidewater is permanently off our restaurant list from here on out - this was deceitful, and you've lost our business.
LOUD and hot kitchen with screaming staff takes away from the overall experience of tidewater.
food - while decent, lacked any flair - lacked garnish - lacked plate appeal.
anything "baked" came in burn to black dished to hot to even eat for 20 minutes and by then food was so overdone it was rubbish.
salads -while decent, lacked that family style round table dining experience tidewater is known for.
bread - while decent, came with butter in togo plastic cups. really plastic cups for meals that cost $35+!!!
overall tidewater in 2016 is a far departure from its golden days. change sometimes is good - not in tidewater's case.
either up (return) the standards or lower the prices.
The food was overcooked--mussels were mushy and inedible; "spoon bread" had a thick brown crust on the top and was dry (definitely not southern spoon bread). The manager did offer us different food and discounted our check.
We have been there many times, but will probably never go back. Too bad.
They were very helpful with the reservations. They had muscles as an entree and I asked if we could have them as an appetizer. I was told no. She then took our order but wasn't going to take mine. I said that I had not ordered and she took mine. I asked for trout and they were out of trout. She then checked if perhaps she could get the muscles as an appetizer. Came back and said she could so we ordered them for four persons. Sat for awhile before the bread etc. came. Then sat a little longer and the waitress came back and asked if we had received the muscles. We said no and we sat a little longer. Finally she appeared with the muscles and said she was sorry they had not come out earlier. The muscles were partially cooked. We got down about half and left the rest. The food appeared finally and one person had order pasta without mushrooms. The dish had mushrooms in it. She ate none of it. Another party had shrimp scampi. She ate none of it because it tasted of fennel and lemon. She was competed for her meal. I think they might have kitchen problems. Not a pleasant experience. Should have eaten at the Chop House in the same block.
Although we had gotten there late for our reservation, we had no problem getting seated. We were greeted with the friendly, warm staff as our party came in segments. By the time we ordered dinner most of the patrons had left, so it was as if we had our own restaurant but the staff was patient and served promptly. I had the Shanghai Style Roughy which was quite scrumptious having forked all the ingredients in each bite. The taste of the Crab Cakes and the Shrimp Fettuccine (my daughter opted out the salmon) was wonderful also. The wait staff selected a good chardonnay with the meal and presented in the style. I believe everyone in our party was quite satisfied (evidence, empty plates) after a long day of dance in the city.
The offer of the birthday dinner cannot be beat. Never have had such a nice "touch", anywhere! Kudos to the idea.
Will always be back; every time I'm in Charleston for lunch or dinner.

Our service was exceptional and the food was well prepared. A great atmosphere for enjoying dinner with a friend or colleagues, but timing is key. If you get there too early it can be busy and louder then one would think. Overall, well worth it to experience.
After an hour from being seated (we had reservations) we still had no appetizers and our order hadn't been taken. When we asked the waitress if we could order and have drinks refilled we were given a glare. We had to ask twice for the shrimp appetizer that was at the bar - just a matter of putting the shrimp on a plate and serving. We did talk to the manager who gave us 2 of the 4 appetizers and a bottle of wine free. The food was good for the exception of our other 2 appetizers (artichoke dip) was cold. We ended up tipping 20% but in hind sight probably shouldn't have. It was def sub par service
We live in NC & frequently make it the coast so we had doubts about the freshness of the seafood & its preparation. Happily, our doubts were proven wrong. All was fresh and prepared with expertise. Even the side of veggies (usually just a plate filler) were wonderful. The dining room is nicely nautical and the wait staff WV -friendly.
