Tidepools - Grand Hyatt Kauai Ratings and Reviews
We were dining at the last seating, which may have been the problem. Our waiter was inattentive and scattered. He took the wine list before we’d had a chance to order wine (so we had to wait for him to bring the back and then wait 15-20 minutes for him to come back again so we could order some). Our waiter brought out our entrees and forgot to bring the salad we ordered (so we canceled it). He also never mentioned the molten lava cake when we ordered and, even though we wanted to order it, he’d disappear so fast, we never got the chance.
I’d ordered the filet (medium rare), which was served raw in the middle. I sent it back and it was returned overdone and charred. Our catch of the day was, however, wonderful. The capper was when our server dropped the check and failed to leave a pen. Classic.
it's a lovely location, but the food is, quite frankly, fairly pedestrian. We ordered 3 fish entrees, and kudos to the chef for trying (each dish had a different starch) but each fish was over-cooked and the net impact just was lacking for value. Add to that a massively over-priced wine list, and the value equation drops a lot.
Beautiful setting for a romantic meal. Most seating is adjacent to the Koi pond that surrounds the place. I have to say the filet mignon was the best I have ever had. Like all of Hawai‘i the price was extremely high but at least the view and quality of the food was good. My one complaint is my wife and I were celebrating our 30th anniversary and we were seated next to a table with small children. This is not a restaurant appropriate for small kids even those wealthy enough to afford it. Take the kids to one of the many other high priced hotel restaurants overlooking the swimming pool. But that’s just me. I’d recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a unique place to celebrate a special occasion or just your last night on this beautiful island paradise.
For years this has been one of our favorite restaurants anywhere, so we were very much looking forward to dining here again. Unfortunately, it didn't quite measure up this time. The food was still great, but some areas of the restaurant were surprisingly stuffy considering how open-air it is. And the room we were seated in had an annoying spotlight shining down on the tables; we would much rather have enjoyed the views outside than the view of fellow diners. Still a nice restaurant, but lost a little magic.
We have been to Tidepools many times in our visits to Kauai and always found it to be special- both in location and food/service. Our recent visit did not meet expectations. The location is of course fantastic in the Grand Hyatt and the service was great but none of us were wowed by our dinners. The salads were quite good but our entrees were just ok. The Hawaiian Catch included mahi, shrimp, lobster tail and a scallop. The mahi was over cooked and the shellfish undercooked and the overall effect was underwhelming. The malasadas for dessert was the best part of the meal.
I had purposely reserved Tidepools for our farewell dinner on Kauai and was surprised to be disappointed with the food.
We chose this restaurant for our anniversary celebration. It was advertised in a travel brochure and being new visitors to Kauai, we thought it would be a perfect spot for our celebration. We were seated at a great table next to the water. The scallop appetizer we ordered was delicious and beautifully presented. The rest of our meal was a real disappointment. Our waiter was cool and unattentive from the start, the fish entree I ordered was overcooked and served on a bed of flavorless noodles. My husband’s entree was not spectacular (best part were the mashed potatoes). We lost our enthusiasm for dessert and left to find it elsewhere.
Our experience was phenomenal! The food was delicious, our table was spectacular and service was top notch. Would recommend for any special evening especially if you are celebrating your honeymoon! Scallops, molten chocolate cake and the Hawaiian catch were the best!
Hoping we would get a chance to review our horrible and expensive experience ! Invited a high school couple from California that had not seen for 50+ years to an extravagant dining out and special eve. Instead found the seating in the middle of a room with nice surrounding tables nearer the water and koi where guests around us could easily hear our conversations...did not request special table nor their 60th anniversary BUT obviously should have !!! First service contact was slow and first drinks arrived slowly ! We had read online reviews and from them ordered the special marbled steaks and the macadamia crusted mahi, a mistake as all four of us were very disappointed with the small slice of somewhat dry & tasteless fish and steak that was not prepared medium rare as ordered (should have followed some of the negative reviewers on these two items !). No ice water refills, very late bread delivery after we had to ask for some, mixed drinks that were delivered late and of course very expensive like the meals and desserts (as expected but with rather poor and average quality !!) We shall not return after living here in Lawai for some 24 years and will not be recommending it ! BUT the mixed drinks, once served but not asked if we wished refills even though the restaurant was less than full or crowded, were adequate and the desserts Excellent. Total experience not nearly worth the $300.+ and thus disappointing especially to our guests that did enjoy the Kukuiula 1359 experience nearby!
Sorry to say the evening was a disaster this time around.
The crab cake appetizer was great. My wife got the Hawaiian catch which she said was good, not great. I had the ribeye with lobster tail added and was very disappointed with the ribeye. It was overcooked but also just not a very good piece of meat. Lobster was ok and the red wine reduction sauce for the ribeye was flavorless. Overall it was not worth the price paid. Was looking forward to this meal as we heard Tidepools was a great place. The ambiance was fantastic but the food left a lot to be desired. Maybe just a bad night for that.
This was a 30th anniversary dinner for my wife and I so we splurged. Really splurged. Dinner for 2 was very expensive. (just over $200) including 2 glasses of wine and dessert.
My wife had the ribeye which was done perfectly and included fingerling potatoes as a side. I had the macadamia crusted mahi mahi which was also perfectly done. Still nice and moist as it should be. My sides included a rice dish and a mango salsa, both were good!
We both had the creme brulee for dessert. Could have easily done with one dessert it was huge for a dessert serving.
Portions overall were good size but not huge. We were full but not stuffed when we left.
The setting for the restaurant is very nice, We had a table right next to the koi pond. Things were quiet enough with most of the customers being couples. It was nice to be able to have a conversation without having to shout. Tables were nice size also. You didn't have to squeeze plates together like you so often have to do.
The service was great. Waiter was attentive without being clingy, plates were remove promptly and the manager circulated asking about your satisfaction and generally making sure things were going smoothly. Even removing a plate or two herself.
All in all a great dinner. My only wish is that we had eaten earlier while the sun was still out so you could see the ocean.
Definitely a great place for a nice dinner if you don't mind the cost.
If you're splurging for an occasion go for it!!
My husband and I came here when we were on our honeymoon to celebrate his birthday. The service was so amazing, and our waitress catered to our individual needs. I would highly recommend the crab cakes to start! They were the best ones I have ever had. Our meals didn't disappoint either, and we were so pleased with our dinner.
Very charming hotel restaurant. It is built over a pond stocked with Coi carp. The pond is surrounded by tropical vegetation. The service was excellent. The food was very good. Their crab cakes were exceptional. There was a good selection of wines and the desserts were good. I think it is one of the best restaurants on the island.
