Tidepools - Grand Hyatt Kauai Ratings and Reviews
I only have one complaint. Many people today enjoy small brewery beers as wine aficionados enjoy a broad choice of wines. This restaurant has a poor choice of mostly Anheuser-Busch InBev controlled beers. I would like to see a better beer selection. For example most IPA fans would never pick Kona Brewing Company’s Castaway IPA as their first choice yet this is the only IPA this restaurant offers.
We expected so much from what we were told is the signature restaurant for The Grand Hyatt. While we loved the atmosphere and the ambiance, we were disappointed with the food. My husband and I both ordered the daily catch. We had both been eating a lot of seafood throughout the multiple islands and were excited to see Tidepool’s spin on it. The swordfish was tougher than anywhere we had had (we were left to assume it wasn’t as fresh because our other experiences were extremely tender and flaky) and it was described as being served with shrimp and scallops. We received one of each. The fish was served on a sweet potato mash and a garlic sauce. The flavors did not compliment or build on one another. We were disappointed and ordered dessert (malasadas) to feel satiated. They were very good. It’s possible we would have been extremely happy with another entree; however when dinner is over $200, any entree should be guaranteed to not disappoint.
Consistently good food and service. Worth a visit, even if not staying at Grand Hyatt. Free valet parking with validation. Hotel was booked solid this trip, so stayed elsewhere. Visited GH twice to enjoy the scenery. Lunch at the terrace restaurant was also very good with a relaxing atmosphere. Entire hotel staff (including grounds keepers) a very efficient, friendly and interesting to chat with.
Excellent meals tonight! The Hawaiian Catch (scallop, shrimp, swordfish and lobster) and the Opah were fantastic. Best meal of our 2 week stay on the island! Desserts of coconut mousse and malasadas were delicious too! And the Skinny Pina Colada was refreshing! Great!!
The setting is beautiful! Most of the dishes were wonderful and tasty, but my fish entree was overcooked and dry, while the shared malasadas were undercooked and doughy. Because we were dining with old friends, our evening was still magical. If the kitchen can step it up just a little in the small details, every meal here will be magical!
Dinner at Tidepools made an already fabulous birthday even better. The service was impeccable. When I made my reservations, I noted I was gluten-free. Without having to mention it again, gluten-free bread was delivered to me. It was the BEST gluten-free bread (loaded with garlic-yum) I have ever tasted. My husband and I shared Tom Kha soup to start. Delectable! Then he had the prime rib which he loved and I had the opah topped with lump crabmeat and hollandaise, with crisp snow peas and broccoli on the side (I skipped the mashers). Wow. Every bite was heaven. We enjoyed it that night AND the next day when we had leftovers.
When deciding what dessert to have, one magically appeared to celebrate my birthday! A gluten-free hot lava flourless cake. OMG. Fresh raspberries on the side and a scoop of vanilla ice-cream.
While the food presentation was exquisite, the view was out of this world. I will include a photo of the waterfall. We sat side-by-side and it's all we saw all night (in addition to our marvelous servers.) We won't wait for another birthday to enjoy ourselves at Tidepools again.
Pork belly appetizer and special catch of the day were both over cooked which was a disappointment. It’s one of those things where you just expect it to be cooked perfectly for the cost you’re paying. Very expensive dinner, which I’m ok with, but it forces my expectations to be high. Our experience overall was good bc the setting was lovely and we had a table next to the pond, but the value just wasn’t there. If you like fish, you’re better off going to the Sushi place on the property - that place is dynamite.
Went to Tidepools on our last night in Kauai. We stayed at the Ko’a Kea and couldn’t have been more surprised by the contrast in service. Our dinner reservation was for 9:15 and from the start the staff acted as if we were nothing but an obstacle to their leaving for the night. Dinner came out very quickly, almost immediately after the rolls arrived. I finished before my wife and the staff immediately cleared my plate though my wife was still eating. Nothing like making someone feel as if they’re dining alone. While we were eating the staff were shutting down the area around us, clearing the basics off tables, closing windows, etc. Extraordinarily offputting, the opposite of the Ko’a Kea experience. I will be back to Kauai again but won’t be going to the Grand Hyatt for anything.
We have eaten at Tidepools many times over the years. Although the service was very good and the setting is still beautiful, the food was just not that inspiring. The fish entrees we tried had too much going on, rather than just relying on the excellent qualities of fresh Hawaiian fish. The vegetarian menu was very limited. Still, if you want the ambiance of eating over a lagoon, this is a nice setting.
First off this restaurant has amazing service, fast, helpful, and most importantly so nice and welcoming. Seriously the service sets this restaurant apart. The food is also delicious as well. Can’t comment on the whole menu but the champagne and the entree we got was phenomenal. It was their vegetarian option, most likely not ordered as often as other dishes, so the fact it was so exceptional is a testament to the cooks here. The restaurant is a bit pricey like all restaurants in Kauai but it is more than worth it. As for the ambience, the restaurant is an open air restaurant set on a beach in Hawaii, nuff said. This is a next level dining experience totally worthy of the price tag and the beautiful beach it’s set next to.
The service was excellent and the food was great but after several years of going to the Tidepools we have noticed that the portions are getting a lot smaller and the prices are going up. Please consider serving slightly larger portions or reducing your prices.
Food was very good, especially the appetizer, ahi/Hamachi poke. Our prime rib was a little under seasoned, and slightly overcooked (asked for medium rare). The 30-day dry aged Makaweli ribeye was also slightly overcooked (also asked for medium rare), but the flavor was spot on! Would order this entrée again. Service was very good, and could have been excellent, but our waiter spent a little too much time entertaining a couple of young ladies at the next table. No long wait for any of the dishes that we ordered. If we did not have the surprise dessert from our waiter, the dinner would have taken no more than 45 minutes.
Despite being on time for our reservation they made us wait awhile for our table...while other parties were seated immediately, so I didn't understand that. But otherwise dinner was good and our server was nice. I had the crab-topped fish and it was yummy. Pretty setting.
