We ate out under the dome of union station, which was beautiful. The food was great and the service was exquisite.
Food was overall good. Kind of odd though that they have a '2 flavor soup' which was black bean and split pea. We asked if one could have only one flavor since they were not blended and were told no. Seemed like a very odd thing to not accommodate for diners. Otherwise, typical soup, salad, burger, sandwich menu.
We were seated in a great place for a business / special get-together. The server was attentive and quick to respond. The food was good but the soup that I ordered was a little bland but the others appeared to enjoy their food. The price was reasonable. Would eat here again.
Our receptionist was amazing! Bridget has a ton of personality and started the evening off with cheer. Our server on the other hand had no personality and couldn't remember that we ordered water and had to remind him several times. The food is average, but the setting is a lot of fun
The occasion was a ladies' holiday dinner; we all enjoyed our food. Service was very good. They gave us a really nice table, relatively private, away from other tables. Decorations were very festive for the holiday season. My only complaint was the $12 house wine, which was nothing special; we all thought that was too expensive.
Great Cuban burgers!! Very good flavor.
Thunder Grill is a typical casual airport/train station restaurant. Most of the tables inside the restaurant are arranged around a very large bar, which makes it difficult to find a quiet spot even when the restaurant is not crowded. On this occasion, the only tables with natural light were not open so customers were confined to the "dark side." The chicken tostada's ingredients were limp and lacking in flavor. The wines by the glass were overpriced.
As soon as we arrived our waiter used a curse word in front of our two children and then proceeded to tell us that he really disliked small children so he really wasn't happy right now. As we were ordering the food he was grumpy when I asked to go last instead of first as it messed up his system of remembering food (he didn't write it down). He did not offer or take drink orders from my husband or I, even though my husband had intended to have a beer with his dinner - we were left with just water (and honestly at this point that was fine because we weren't going to run up his tip by running up the bill). Right from the beginning this was not a good experience. Our food was delivered by someone else and was correct. He made a big show of letting us know that sodas would be $4 each and did NOT come with free refills. Later as he came to check on us he asked our 9 year old son if he wanted a refill on his soda rather than asking my husband or I. The food was average (our burgers were over cooked and bland).
Food was good. Too many fruit flies floating around
Wonderful lunch gathering point next to Metro snd Union Station.
Horrible, overly fried food which had an obvious hair in one of the sauces. Service was fair- waiter seemed generally disgruntled. Host and hostess were very pleasant and effective. Would not return for a meal- a pity that it is a nice, convenient space.
We ate there waiting to go on the monument by moonlight tour. The food was very creative and great presentation. Good service and interesting setting at Union Station.
I gave Thunder Grill four stars because it's good at what it does, not because it serves the highest cuisine or anything particularly creative. It does sandwiches, fajitas, fried calamari, marqueritas, that sort of thing well. And it's outer dining areas provide a nice view of Union Station's interior. To sum it up, satisfying and comfortable.
My wife and I were in town for a conference nearby and wanted a place to have a nice dinner without spending a fortune. We were very happy to be seated right away in a booth next to the bar. The wait staff were very attentive and food and drinks came quickly. All four of us enjoyed our dinners. Wine list is not extensive but has several nice items. The locally-brewed Right Porter is fantastic.
Would happily go there again.
Thunder Grill was the perfect restaurant for the what I needed. I was in DC on business and looking for a place to meet one of my gal pals before boarding my Amtrak north. We were able to sit, have drinks, and a leisurely dinner while staying inside Union Station. Had there not been a cocktail reception going on in the main hall, it would have been even nicer.
Very poor wait staff. We had a large group -- 15 people for lunch when they were not very busy. They only assigned one wait staff to the table. He finally took our first drink order about 10 minutes after we were seated, and when they were delivered 15 minutes after that (he commented that the bar was not moving very efficiently), we ordered a second round and our food. We noted the table of four next to us was clearly unhappy with the waiter. The second round of drinks for us appeared after 15 minutes and he casually mentioned he had just then put in our food order. At that time he reviewed all of our food orders and realized he had missed one person's order. Our food arrived (with the help of another staff) an hour after we were seated -- and the stray lost order was served about 10 minutes after the rest of us. When it came time to deliver the bill, the waiter confessed he was not doing a good job and that his fellow workers had agreed. He begged for our forgiveness. I didn't pick up the tab, but I suspect he was shown little sympathy when it came to the tip.
Even with the changes, this place is a great lunch spot and convenient!
Exceeded our expectations in all areas...bartenders very friendly...I really enjoyed the chopped salad, very fresh
I dined at Thunder Grill for a business lunch. The wait staff ignored me for several minutes in spite of making eye contact with me while whizzing by. A couple strolls up after I do and are seated before I am even though I was standing there before they were and also had a reservation. Despite the rough start I was optimistic that the service would improve. It didn't. The waiter took forever to come to the table and when he did he took the drink order for one member of the party but not the other. The food was mediocre, but I never got my drink until my entree came out. I had to remind the waiter that I wanted the drink and he seemed annoyed at the request. Overall this is a regrettable experience. I would never go back. If you're in Union station, hit the food court.
The service from greeter to server was great and attentive.
Food was good and we had GREATservice!! Thanks for the fan!
Crab cake sandwich was really good. Server was great and thoughtful. Will be back when I'm back in DC
We had family in town for the week and I was looking for an easy location to meet for dinner. Union Station/Thunder Grill are right on the Red line and central to sightseeing here in the District. We enjoyed a pleasant meal, a bottle of wine, and great service! This is not a fancy restaurant but is a solid choice for the area. My wife and I will return for their desserts if nothing else. Our server was professional, attentive, and provided great suggestions.
It was so hot I couldn't enjoy dinner or my company
This place is definitely a touristy spot with the benefit of actually having good food (albeit with fact that they are in a train station). There wasn't a wait on a Thursday late afternoon , but I decided to sit at the bar since there were an open seat and happy hour was happening. Dyno greeted me immediately and I ordered an mango margarita and the fried chicken and waffles. The bartender said it was really good and the waffles tasted fresh. . The dish ended up being really delicious. A friend joined me so we moved to a table and Crystal helped us. She was pleasant and assisted us in closing our bar tab so that we could move over to a booth. Although we couldn't get the happy hour pricing at the table we were still able to order the items. The texas nachos is bountiful so be sure to bring your appetite if you are ordering this item solo.
This place is definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.
Husband and I were seated at theoutside dining area in UnionStation. We waited about 20 once until a waiter came and it wasn't even our waited. Food was not good at all and not worth the money we spent. Overpriced for the experience we had.
Had booked an evening bus tour of DC and thought it would be convenient to have dinner at a restaurant in Union Station, where we were to board the bus later that night for the tour. This worked just fine and we were happy that we dined here. Food was okay, nothing special. Dining in the great hall of the station was very different but led us to do some people watching while having a relaxed dinner not having to worry about catching a cab to our destination after dinner.
This was a good restaurant. The service was great in that our waiter was attentive and accommodating for our large group. It wasn't super formal, very causal for a after work meet.
Good southwestern fare. Brisket sandwich excellent and ribs. A bit downscale from expectation had 9 and 12 year olds which worked well. Good drinks. P
Another great time at Thunder Grill. Definitely a must if you are in or around Union Station. The bar scene is great, 2-3 happy hour specials that include a great list of food and drinks. They get busy during primetime right after work but just a little patient and they will get to you. All in all a good time.
Myself and about 6 others were celebrating a farewell happy hour for a co-worker, the Thunder Grill Bar Staff and Table Staff were simply outstanding. The happy hour prices are great and the atmosphere is energetic... I have enjoyed the Thunder Grill at Union Station about 10 times and every time it's a great time.
The service was horrible. We waited 15 minutes before a server showed up at our table. I ordered a garden salad and she brought me a Caesar salad. It took another 15 min to get the right salad. By then my companion was almost finished with her burger which by the way was raw instead of medium. $17 dollars for a very small salad with 3 strips of grilled chicken. Not worth it. Don't eat here!
Food so -so. Service slow. WORST huevos rancheros ever.
WE needed a place to eat prior to doing a tour that left from Union Station. Food was average, service a bit slow, priced a bit high for what you received.
I went there with my granddaughter on a Thursday night. The hostess was fantastic, extremely welcoming. The waiter gave us excellent service and the food was GREAT!
Each time I visit DC the Thunder Grille happens to be the best place to meet my friends and family. The location is perfect, the food is good but best of all the staff is terrific! I arrived 3 hours early for my reservation. I was tired and I just wanted to sit with my computer. The staff handily seated me and the service was attentive and timely. Thank you all so much!
Good service, poor food quality
Met a dear friend for dinner. This was our first time, and have to say- the food and service was great, Our server, Salvador was wonderful and very helpful with questions about the menu. I would definitely dine here again!
The staff was great and very friendly and the food came out quickly! I would highly recommend especially if you are waiting for your train as it is convenient to the boarding platforms and they are timely!
The restaurant is under construction (as is all of Union Station). This caused it to be noisier than normal. They did a nice job to mitigate any construction concerns and the food and service were fine. I will go again.
