Thunder Grill Ratings and Reviews
Came for a work lunch and the food was great. Gave such a poor review because the service was TERRIBLE! Our waiter complained that we came 8 minutes earlier than our reservation. Also took forever to attend to the table and take our order. To top it off, once the check came said he was unable to split because it would take too long to get the manager to void and then redo. After several of us saying that was unacceptable conduct took an extra 40 min to split check and came back and threw receipts on table. Will never return.
Had several great meals here several years ago, but the menu has changed. The food is pretty average. Good but not particularly creative. Seems more like a burger and sandwich joint now than a place for a nice dinner. Service was friendly but a little slow. Our party had various dishes, from salads to burgers to salmon. Everything tasted fine, but nothing memorable.
Thunder Grill never disappoints. The location is perfect if one is near Union Station or about to board a train. I’ve had the fish tacos several times and they taste delicious-very fresh. The side salad is pretty big and very good also. Our server was pro,to, efficient, but left us alone when we were talking.
Both the service and the quality of the food was OUTSTANDING. We were celebrating the fact that one of our associates had just been declared "Cancer free". The manager and wait staff catered to us as if we were part of their family. We will all return to the Thunder Grill many more times because of this.
Our group of ~15 ladies had a great time at Thunder Grill! It does not look fancy and sits IN Union Station, so almost looks like a mall restaurant, but my meal was really great. I had the crab cakes. Others did say their food was "okay" so it may depend on the dish you choose. All in all, it was great for our group!
Thunder Grill is a Union Station standby. This is a place to go for reliable burgers, sandwiches, and salads in a comfortable sit-down environment. Thunder Grill is not a destination restaurant, but a safe pick at Union Station. As for view, it is hard to beat the Great Hall.
This is a convenient location in DC for lunch due to the metro and 2 commuter lines. The hamburgers were very good. The fish sandwich was just average . Service was very good and personal. We were reseated when one member of our party had trouble with stairs.
Thunder Grill has a great location -- set in Union Station, it is very convenient when drawing people from across the DC area. The menu tends towards tex-mex, but offers a little wider choice of options. The food was good --not great. I had a beef salad in a fried "taco" bowl. It doesn't come with salad dressing, but I asked for some, which made the salad better. The meat was a bit over-cooked for my taste, but very flavorful. The service was ok. I had to ask more than once for extra ice. All in all, satisfactory.
The restaurant is inside Union Station near the east entrance. Happy hour is in the bar on the main floor. The food was pretty good, overpriced and small portions, but good. The bartenders were a little rude to us when requesting menus. Also, a friend and I was able to overhear some of their inappropriate comments. Drink were well made. Overall good experience. I would go but not when certain bartenders/servers are there.
We were looking for a table service restaurant in Union Station en route to a family function. We had brunch on Saturday, and it was hard to get the waiter's attention even though the restaurant was not that busy. The breakfast burrito was dry and when I asked for salsa, I got chipotle. My husband asked for his poached eggs to be "not too runny" but that's how they were delivered the first time. They did remake the eggs to his liking, but I ate alone while he waited for his meal. So, if you're focused on Location-Location-Location, Thunder Grill is adequate; if you have time and want table service, I'd suggest elsewhere outside of Union Station.
The black bean and split pea soup was warm when it arrived, not hot, and quite bland, as was the steak on my salad, even though the steak itself was tender and cooked perfectly. I wish it had more flavor so I could have enjoyed it. The environment is loud, but it is in a train station so it is expected. I will likely not return anytime soon.
The reason to recommend this restaurant is the great location on the main level of Union Station, with seating outside the restaurant in the main hall. On my last visit we were seated inside, under what seemed to be a stairway near the bar. The restaurant seemed understaffed; service was very slow and that combined with the unattractive seating and the bar-par food made it only a just-adequate experience.
The food was lovely and the service was hospitable and quick. Only con was that they ran out of all burger buns and had to use toast. My veggie burger was still great though! We sat on the "outside" area to get a beautiful view of the stations gorgeous ceilings.
I go to thunder grill for the environment. There was live music in union station as well as the hustle and bustle of Amtrak. Great place to hang out with lots of energy. The food is ok not great. I had the Cobb which was good but not much chicken. Most entrees are around $15 so it is ok value. The environment is really the value here
This is a better-than-average restaurant strategically placed in the entrance to a major transportation hub--Washington's Union Station. Good restaurants in busy locations are hard to find, so this rather average restaurant is a great restaurant for such a location.
Went with 12 people following a long day of meetings to catch up on how each person's meetings went. We had a space that was just for us leading out into Union Station. It might be louder during the day but we had the place to ourselves. Great food, service and in general a super place to meet.
Had lunch here with a friend and former colleague who now works near Union Station and it was really very nice and quite convenient. I parked in the garage upstairs above the station and it was easy to access the restaurant (Note: if you keep your visit to under 2 hours, don't forget to validate your ticket as you return to the garage - you will save a bundle).
The food was very good, the service was friendly and attentive, and we chose to sit in the section on the side of the room that opens into Union Station. From here, things are quiet and you can look into the historic station and appreciate the architecture, it is peaceful and you can actually have a conversation. The Classic Burger and the Southwest Chopped Salad were both terrific. The interior design of the restaurant itself is quite beautiful and unique.
All in all, it was a fine lunch and we enjoyed the food, the service, and the station view.
Our family group has eaten here 4 times and will surely return! Briggett has a fantastic way of making folks feel welcomed at Thunder Grill. I talk up this restaurant to friends because of its good food and the convenient for dining after meeting folks coming into town by train.
