It has been some time since we went to Thornton River even though we are local. My previous experiences had been special meals with set menus (ie Valentine's, New Year's) or lunch which was wonderful.
We had out of town guests and wanted to take them somewhere local and nice. The service was amazing from start to finish. There is simply no complaint in that department. The wine choice was wonderful and priced appropriately. Our meals were not the same story. While good quality, the portions were exceptionally small and one of the meals was not at all as the description suggested. So while the prices were not outrageous on their own, the small portions made it not a great experience for the price. When we first arrived the restaurant was not crowded and the noise level was pleasant, as it filled for dinner, it was nearly impossible to converse with the other 3 people at our table. The other thing that became overwhelming to me was the open grill, as the number of meals being prepared increased, the fan for the open grill could not keep up and the restaurant filled with smoke. I am asthmatic and it was pretty uncomfortable.
Great service and good food, though the portions are on the smaller side which throws off the value a bit due to slightly higher prices. We especially loved the scallops appetizer and the pork shoulder. It’s also hard to go wrong with candied pecans in the salad dish we chose. We’ll be back the next time we are in Sperryville enjoying the country.
Our first time in Sperryville which is a quaint, very small town. Pleasantly surprised to find excellent cuisine at this casual restaurant which serves everything from filet mignon to burgers. I had excellent snapper while my husband enjoyed his filet. They also make a great Old Fashion! And all at very reasonable prices. Highly recommend.
Fabulous! We enjoyed a lovely dinner prior to heading to the Little Washington theater for a show.
Sorry in a dumpy little town of Sperryville and goes down from there. The white bean and chicken soup was tasty, but there it's a limited menu and the meat was over done and bland. The atmosphere is a lunch time pub with several high top tables and a few four top tables in the middle.
While the server was very attentive and informative, it is simply Not worth going back.
We love Thornton River Grill! It is our go to place for special occasions or when we get tired of cooking our own gourmet dinners. This trip was for our 40th Wedding Anniversary and as usual the food and wine choices were excellent! We really want to try the cocktail bar next door, but live across the mountain. Next time we will stay overnight in Sperryville and really enjoy all the TRG facility has to offer.
Menu too miniscule. Came for previously GREAT prime rib - gone, no steaks except a foo foo filet that was a bit tough at $36.
Another excellent meal and service at our favorite
home town Fine dining Spot!
The restaurant just underwent a spiffing up and it shows very favorably. Also, after some initial skepticism about the new menu, they seem to have hit their stride. Even the deserts have improved again. In general, very please with the direction of this all ready favorite for us.
Needed a fish option as Valentine's Day main course
What a truly amazing time!!! Everything was perfect. We can’t wait to go back again!
Excellent food, wonderful service: do yourself a favor and make the trip to Thornton River Grille!
TRG was fine, but i have come to loathe Open table. I will NEVER use your service again. I have spent countless hours deleting your posts and trying to unsubscribe. Obviously unsuccessfully!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thornton River is a great restaurant with an excellent food.
Food was very good although a little pricey. Love the sperryville area but will stick to lunches from here on.
This restaurant is very good, but not quite up to the very high standards of the previous management. My wife’s buffalo was a bit over cooked but my butter squash ravioli was excellent. The wine pours are very generous and a great value. Service is prompt, courteous, and efficient.
the drink policy re Frances (the on-site bar) is ridiculous and also takes a long time. Restaurant nearly empty when we arrived took forever to get a glass of wine - and friend could not get a beer (carried in the store) because Frances did not stock it.
Whatever business arrangement is causing this kerfuffle it is unacceptable and losing TRG business. Like the restaurant very much - my friend who wanted the beer will never come back and was once a regular.
Neighborhood Gem! Absolutely perfect for a date night escape in Sperryville. The staff was friendly, accommodating and made NYE special.
Spent Christmas Eve at Thornton River and it was a special evening. Great food and ambiance.
This place used to be outstanding, but I think the quality has slipped a bit. Our food was good, but certainly far from special. I am not sure if this is because of the new ownership....
A pleasant suprise! Amazing quality food by a chef that clearly loves his craft and takes pride in his work. True farm to table experience. We will be back.
Had a nice meal the Rockish and pork belly appetizer are excellent.
The new menu is superb, offering mainly non-vegetarian options: beef, pork, lamb, shrimp, fish--with a consolation vegetarian offering for those who arrive in a Toyota Prius. There is an open kitchen attached to a small dining area. On good days there's outdoor dining on a second-story terrace. The wine list is satisfactorily diverse and reasonably priced, the beers are more interesting. Service is outstanding and personalized. Many of the better-heeled locals eat here, although there is some traffic from people using Route 211 to and from Shenandoah Park and Luray Caverns. Lots of free parking. We stay nearby on weekends, so this is a must-visit place to have lunch, dinner, and brunch and to entertain visitors but, even if you live at a distance, it is worth the schlep.
Really enjoyed the new menu selections and wine list changes. We did miss the fried goat cheese with chutney and hope it comes back.
We had a super-wonderful experience! Our server was warm and friendly, the selection of beer and wine was lovely and the food was great.
One of the best restaurants we have ever been too. Fantastic in every way. We go back as often as possible. Don't pass it by.
All four of us had excellent meals, all different. The Grille has kicked it up a notch or two!
TRG continues to have quality meals at a reasonable price. The servers are always professional and attentive. You can't beat dining in the beauty of Rappahannock County!
Excellent food and service. We eat there annually and this was the best food we have had!
Thanks to the chef, "new cook", Craig and the staff for a lovely evening.
The TRG has been a steady presence in Sperryville, and the new chef has added some buzz to the menu. Altogether, a great venue if you are in the area or feel like spending the day in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
My long standing request is that they need to get an espresso machine post-haste, so as to round up nicely a pleasant overall dining experience.
The food is good but too expensive for a local country restaurant. The Rappahannock oysters were disappointing - not very tasty and a bit blurry.
I don't know why it bills itself as a "waterfront" restaurant. It is set well back from the trickle of the Thornton River, which is hardly visible. More like a "roadfront" restaurant.
Also, why does it have that silly "e" in Grille? Does someone think that is the French for grill? The French word for "grill" in this context is "grill". "Grille" means something like a metal fence.
Or is it meant to be in "ye olde" English?
I say drop the pretentious and meaningless "e".
After all, the Bleu Rock Inn down the road quite rightly changed its name to Blue Rock!
TRG remains the undisputed king of dining in these parts. Featuring food both healthy and hearty, with cozy indoor seating and a spacious roof deck, Thornton River caters to nearly all tastes and is the perfect end to a day in the Shenandoah.
from start (pork belly app) to entre (Lamb rage/ rockfish/filet) to desert (crime brûlée) this meal was an experience to celebrate my son’s 40th birthday and could not have been better. Fresh seasonal ingredients expertly prepared and presented by a talented waitstaff we felt like we were family dining in someone’s (albeit an amazing cook’s) home... Bravo! First rate! Thank you so much
Casual atmosphere; great food. We started with the goat cheese appetizer (delicious!) and oysters (also very good). Then, burgers all around. Very tasty! Sat outside, despite cooler temps and the space heaters kept us very comfortable!
Love this place. Drive an hour and half for scenery and great food
We received delicious food and even better service during our dinner at Thornton River Grille. Look forward to going back sometime!
The new Fall menu is incredible. The rockfish and shrimp were amazing. Our plates were a work of art and the service was perfect. We had been to Thorton River Grille for lunch several times but this was our first dinner there. We can't wait to go back!
I have doned at Thornton River Grille for years and looked forward to another great dining out event. Much to the disappointment of both of us we found the food to be nothing special this time. Neither of us had drinks, appetizers of dessert and still the bill including a 20 percent tip was in the mid-seventies. Sadly I have decided that I have no need to return to this restaurant!
We are regulars at the Thornton River Grille and our last experience proved why. The food is great and the service wonderful. At the end of the meal, we were told that the desserts were on the house. The reason: 2 months earlier, there had been a problem at an affiliated restaurant. Management put two and two together (without any prompting) and comped our desserts. That's exemplary business.
Service was outstanding. While the dining room was at full capacity, the staff of 5 hummed like a well tuned machine.
