The new menu is superb, offering mainly non-vegetarian options: beef, pork, lamb, shrimp, fish--with a consolation vegetarian offering for those who arrive in a Toyota Prius. There is an open kitchen attached to a small dining area. On good days there's outdoor dining on a second-story terrace. The wine list is satisfactorily diverse and reasonably priced, the beers are more interesting. Service is outstanding and personalized. Many of the better-heeled locals eat here, although there is some traffic from people using Route 211 to and from Shenandoah Park and Luray Caverns. Lots of free parking. We stay nearby on weekends, so this is a must-visit place to have lunch, dinner, and brunch and to entertain visitors but, even if you live at a distance, it is worth the schlep.

Really enjoyed the new menu selections and wine list changes. We did miss the fried goat cheese with chutney and hope it comes back.

TRG continues to have quality meals at a reasonable price. The servers are always professional and attentive. You can't beat dining in the beauty of Rappahannock County!

Excellent food and service. We eat there annually and this was the best food we have had!

Thanks to the chef, "new cook", Craig and the staff for a lovely evening.

The TRG has been a steady presence in Sperryville, and the new chef has added some buzz to the menu. Altogether, a great venue if you are in the area or feel like spending the day in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

My long standing request is that they need to get an espresso machine post-haste, so as to round up nicely a pleasant overall dining experience.

The food is good but too expensive for a local country restaurant. The Rappahannock oysters were disappointing - not very tasty and a bit blurry.
I don't know why it bills itself as a "waterfront" restaurant. It is set well back from the trickle of the Thornton River, which is hardly visible. More like a "roadfront" restaurant.
Also, why does it have that silly "e" in Grille? Does someone think that is the French for grill? The French word for "grill" in this context is "grill". "Grille" means something like a metal fence.
Or is it meant to be in "ye olde" English?
I say drop the pretentious and meaningless "e".
After all, the Bleu Rock Inn down the road quite rightly changed its name to Blue Rock!

TRG remains the undisputed king of dining in these parts. Featuring food both healthy and hearty, with cozy indoor seating and a spacious roof deck, Thornton River caters to nearly all tastes and is the perfect end to a day in the Shenandoah.

from start (pork belly app) to entre (Lamb rage/ rockfish/filet) to desert (crime brûlée) this meal was an experience to celebrate my son’s 40th birthday and could not have been better. Fresh seasonal ingredients expertly prepared and presented by a talented waitstaff we felt like we were family dining in someone’s (albeit an amazing cook’s) home... Bravo! First rate! Thank you so much

Casual atmosphere; great food. We started with the goat cheese appetizer (delicious!) and oysters (also very good). Then, burgers all around. Very tasty! Sat outside, despite cooler temps and the space heaters kept us very comfortable!

The new Fall menu is incredible. The rockfish and shrimp were amazing. Our plates were a work of art and the service was perfect. We had been to Thorton River Grille for lunch several times but this was our first dinner there. We can't wait to go back!

I have doned at Thornton River Grille for years and looked forward to another great dining out event. Much to the disappointment of both of us we found the food to be nothing special this time. Neither of us had drinks, appetizers of dessert and still the bill including a 20 percent tip was in the mid-seventies. Sadly I have decided that I have no need to return to this restaurant!

We are regulars at the Thornton River Grille and our last experience proved why. The food is great and the service wonderful. At the end of the meal, we were told that the desserts were on the house. The reason: 2 months earlier, there had been a problem at an affiliated restaurant. Management put two and two together (without any prompting) and comped our desserts. That's exemplary business.

Thornton River Grille was recommended to myself and my fiancé as a great place to eat while we were visiting Shenandoah. We were looking for a nice restaurant to eat and came across Thornton River Grille in our search but without looking at the menu thought it was a burger place but boy were we wrong. They have a nice assortment of quality dishes. I would highly recommend making a reservation as we did as this is not a huge restaurant but it makes for faster service having a reservation. Upon arrival we were immediately escorted to our table, the waiter was awesome in giving us what was on the menu and what the specials were. The food was great, staff were awesome, and very helpful to what they offer. I would highly recommend Thornton River Grille for anyone looking for a great place to eat in the Shenandoah region.

We enjoyed our meal. Our waitress was friendly, but my order came with items missing. I asked about the added items I requested on my salad and it was quickly remedied. My entree had some items missing as well. I had passed on the mashed potatoes with garlic and the waitress offered to add extra spinach and roasted tomatoes instead. I agreed, but it came with no extra spinach and not a roasted tomato to be seen. I just ate what I had. It was all very good, but the attention to detail was missed. We will come again, though.

The chef has presented a complete menu and the kitchen is turning out really good food. The cocktails are excellent, although a bit pricey. Service was just perfect level of attention, etiquette, and knowledge.
On this night it was unusually noisy due to a group of 12+ that were carrying on between two tables- inconsideration for others is no fault of the restaurant.

I had guests from New York visiting for the Memorial Service of my brother and wanted to show them a little bit of Virginia. The drive from Front Royal to Sperryville was beautiful. The food and the restaurant were perfect for the occasion. The staff accommodated two more than our reservation, and the food was excellent. My guests were very happy and everyone loved what they ordered as did I. Overall it was a very satisfying experience. Thank you very much.

My husband and I were staying overnight in Sperryville at the Hopkins Ordinary and had dinner at the Thorton River Grill, which was located conveniently across the street from the B&B. Our meals were good, and we certainly didn't leave hungry. I was a little surprised that my bouillabaisse was basically just seafood in broth (no veggies, potatoes, or bread). Perfectly fine, just a little underwhelming.

The food was quite good. I had a grilled quail which was tender and quite tasty.
The service was spotty. It took a very long time to bring the cocktail that I ordered immediately on arrival at the table. The staff were pleasant and trying to be helpful, but were not well trained. One dish that was brought to our table was not what had been ordered.

Thornton River Grill is kind of the only game in town in Sperryville, unless you want pizza. I think it's way overpriced for what you get, but they have a captive audience. Great service.

We've been to Thornton River Grille quite a few times but mostly for Sunday brunch. We went there for my birthday with my wife and adult son. We asked to sit outside which was very nice. I had the rockfish special which was overcooked. I didn't ask for it to be redone because I was concerned about it coming undercooked. My wife had the shrimp which had absolutely no flavor at all. My son had the prime rib which I tasted and would recommend.
I think from now on I will only come for brunch.
BTW, I ordered a specialty drink which in my menu was listed at $11. When the bill came they had charged me $13. I questioned it and the waitress checked another menu and that one said $10 which is what they charged me after redoing the bill. I would definitely remember the prices listed on the menu for the items you order and check the bill when it comes.

This used to be a "go to" place for us, but my fish was over cooked, the bus girl poured water in my sister's sparkling water and the meal was expensive. When we tried to get the wait staff's attention, they all had trouble noticing us and we were sitting right next to where they were all standing. The special fish entrees that were overcooked were $35 each!! The menu hasn't changed much over the years, but we thought it might since it's under new ownership. Oh well. I think we'll go elsewhere from now on.

We were staying at Skyland in Shenandoah National Park and wanted to meet up with relatives for dinner - the Thornton River Grille turned out to be roughly halfway between where we were and where they lived - lucky coincidence! The place was packed on a Saturday night, definitely was good to have a reservation! We were seated immediately, service was prompt and friendly - we felt at home immediately. Good wine choices, excellent food. I had a very well prepared Swordfish special, my wife went with the Lamb which was delicious. Great find if you are in the park and are looking for something nicer than the fare available there.
