Thistle Lodge Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Total disappointment! I’ve been wanting to eat here for 30+ years because of the beautiful setting on Sanibel! This restaurant does not live up to the hype or even commemorancy with the resort! The waiter was rude and rushed us thru the ordering process. The food was an even bigger dissappoitment and mediocre at best! I’ve had a better fish sandwich the previous day for 1/3 of the price and it was delivered with a smile!
To quote our server when I ask if the Mahi Mahi was fresh “nothing here is fresh!”
That about says it ALL! I’m sad to say I won’t be back!
We had enjoyed the Sunday Brunch for years and looked forward to this year. This year they had only a Brunch Buffet although their website still listed the Sunday Brunch menu. Most of the buffet brunch food tasted like it came from a Costco freezer. The person making omelets did not know how to make omelets(they were fried hard), The grits were like soup, the biscuits were stale and hard as hardtack, the salad was unappetizing looking(did not try), and the food selection was limited. The only saving grace were the half price Mimosas.
A couple seated across from us left without ordering when they were told there was no Brunch. They were smarter than we.
Dined here on two occasions on a recent trip to the area. First trip was fantastic, excellent food and service so we decided to dine there again. Second trip was very disappointing. The Ahi tuna was far from Ahi grade, overcooked, poorly presented, but tolerable. I ordered a specific after dinner drink and received without warning a substitute that was simply awful. The server said they were out of what I ordered. R U kidding me? Don't bring me some look-a-like and try to pass it off. Will never go back.
We had a reservation for an early New Year's Eve dinner. We didn't know that they had a limited menu that evening, but that worked out well. The entree price included either soup or salad as well as a dessert. I had the sea bass which was cooked to perfection. My husband had the steak and lobster which was also wonderful. It was a toss up as to whether the key lime pie or the apple pie was better. Although there is a fee to get over to Sanibel, it is worth the drive to experience this restaurant at least once.
We went for New Years Eve. There was a fixed price menu, which fact wasn’t made known to us until we got there (their website didn’t say). The menu was vastly reduced from the everyday offerings. “Outside” where wer chose to sit, is right by the chlorine smelling, very loud, outdoor pool w no clear view of anything but the pool bar. Food was so-so at best. The island drink I had two sips of was uninspired. Service was attentive, but not practiced. Would not go back and would not recommend. Much better places on island.
Christmas Buffet was totally overpriced at $50 per person plus imposed 20% gratuity. Food and service mediocre. Shellfish not properly clean, correct utensils not available. Food items not identified soup, casseroles etc. Pasta bar bland outcome available seafood added not cooked. Prime rib poor cut lacking flavor. Food items not replaced in timely manner, serving tables soiled. Totally disappointed with our experience - have previously given this restaurant excellent reviews when ordering off the menu so expected same for the Christmas meal. I'm sorry but maybe the management will read this and have a positive reaction and fix this !
It was all good except having never been there for a buffet the staff could have pointed out the
Different rooms and what was available. Nothing was labeled as to what was in each covered
dish. Food was excellent but we never did know what was all available.
My husband and I took advantage of Restaurant Week while visiting Sanibel and had a date night at Thistle Lodge....also the same resort where we got married. The food and service were excellent, and with the holiday decorations, the ambiance was perfect. We prefer a quieter dining experience, and this fit the bill. Would recommend to friends.
Dining room undergoing renovation, so seating a bit cramped, but offset by friendly, competent team service that made everyone comfortable. Obvious that considerable attention is paid to food quality, preparation and presentation. Prices still feel a couple bucks too high per dish
Food was very good. Jason the waiter was excellent. What ruined it was the music it was traditional American Indian. It was extremely mournful yet the restaurant was decorated for. Christmas. My daughter and her husband said they felt like they were at a. Yoga. Session. I would still highly recommend it for the food
Our dinner was pleasing to the eye as well as the taste buds. We shared an appetizer of lamb lollipops which were as tender as they were tasty. I had the lobster and lump crab “diver” scallops which were simply delicious and prepared to perfection.
It's all about the food for us and throw in some atmosphere for good measure but in this case the service deserves a special mention. Our server, Richard, provided us with one of our more memorable experiences. The service, the timing, the accommodations to my wife's food allergies was excellent but what stood out to us was the conversation we had with him. Don't want to get into the details but let's just say it was inspirational.
Way overrated. Went for Restaurant Week. They said none of their meats for $35 menus came in but they had a $55 price fix menu. Waiter was lousy. Worst Ceasar salad ever. Will not return. Also, Open Table said no 6:30 reservation was available. Arrived at 7 for 7:15 reservation and place was sparse.
To be fair this was there Thanksgiving buffet. They were clearly overbooked. We had to wait 15 minutes for a table I had reserved earlier in the month. We had to sit on the outside porch. The waitress was fine. We barely had flatware. The food was ok but looked completely picked over by the time we got to eat. There was no salad left. Serving spoons left in the dishes or just laying on the tables in front of the food. Made it very unappetizing. The bill was $279 with a 20% gratuity added on automatically. 20% for pouring four glasses of water and bringing 2 drinks to our table????Completely not worth it. I was super disappointed!
We booked Thistle Lodge looking for a special Thanksgiving meal during our Sanibel vacation. Comments from others we met on Sanibel told us we made a good decision, so we were even more excited to try it! On arrival, valet parking is convenient, and the building is beautiful. Inside it seemed to be equally as charming as the exterior. But we were disappointed to learn today's service was a buffet and ordering from the menu was not an option. It would have been nice to know this in advance.
Our table was not available since people were lingering over their meals. The hostess showed us a lousy option on a porch, and ended up sitting us outside on the covered patio. Ambiance - lousy. And all evening people on their way to their room or to the swimming pool would walk through the dining area.
Time to eat! The shrimp was perfectly prepared, but the crab legs were watery and fishy - obviously refrozen. And no drawn butter to accompamy it.
The white turkey meat was moist and excellent, but the dark meat was cooked separately with a cornbread stuffing, and was overcooked and dry. So sad. I usually count on the dark meat being very moist and flavorful.
On the dessert table, the peach pie was burned. The pumpkin pie needed more whipped cream, but none was available.
Service was poor, very slow, considering they only had to bring us drinks. We served our own food. And once we asked for the check, it took 15 minutes and asking a 2nd server before we received the tab. They already added an 18% gratuity to the tab! We were a party of 2 and they didn't have to take a food order! This was insulting. I normally tip 20%, but today I wanted to tip much less.
Sadly, what we looked forward to enjoying was an overall disappointment. I hope this is unique and limited to a Thanksgiving day one-time let down.
My husband, college-aged daughter and I had our Thanksgiving dinner at Thistle Lodge this year during our trip to Captiva Island. They only offered a buffet on this day. It was good with all the traditional holiday offerings (turkey, stuffing, etc). There was a complete area just for desserts! Our waiter, Woody, was very attentive refilling our drinks and clearing plates away. The restaurant is in a beautiful old seaside cottage right on the Gulf. We had a beautiful day and I am glad I booked this special meal.
Lovely restaurant located on Sanibel Island. I had been wanting to go there for a long time and thought that the Thanksgiving buffet would be a good occasion. I requested a table with a view of the water, and they did accommodate that request. The food was good but there were not really too many creative dishes nor was it anything out of the ordinary. The setting is lovely and is worth going just to see the restaurant. Because they already added the gratuity, service was very minimal. We even had a bottle of wine and had to serve it to ourselves, even when I hinted that our glasses needed to re-filled. Overall, my experience could have been vastly improved by improved service. I would return on a non-holiday to see if the food and/or service was any better.
We chose to sit outside to enjoy the weather, but it felt kind of odd by the pool. The interior of the restaurant is really beautiful though. The server at the table next to us explained the specials for at least 5 minutes. But we never heard anything about them, which was a bummer since they sounded amazing. The Mahi was delicious as well as the other entrees at our table.
A server asked us rudely to get our 1 1/2 year old out of his way while we were getting situated at our table. He continued to be extremely rude to my husband trying to explain how busy he was (there was only one other table of diners besides us).
We've never been treated so horribly. We didn't even get our water before we decided to leave.
We highly recommend NOT going to this restaurant.
